Last night at a party I met this girl.(i'm a girl also my bf was there and I wasn't trying to score her) She was a born again christian, that I have no problem about however...

She didn't believe in the big bang, evolution, or the universe.
She honestly defended the fact that the solar system is IT. nothing else. And the Earth is the centre of everything. She believes that some old bearded guy created us for his glorification and that our only purpose in life is to praise God!

God sounds like a bit of a narcassist to me :P

    Well she's obviously very young.

Just wait a few years for when she rebels and bangs everything that moves.

To peeps saying 'leave her be': sometimes people like this need to be called on their nonsense.

    Can you prove her wrong?

If you can demonstrate to her that there is stuff outside our solar system and that the earth revolves around the sun beyond any doubt, then that's fair enough. But I'm taking it that in a party situation, you did not have an interstellar telescope or the time to prove the heliocentric theory to her.

So essentially both you and her failed to understand how the other person does not hold the same core beliefs as each other, but neither of you were able to prove your beliefs to the other's satisfaction.

Ah the joys of drunken arguments.

Not at all. I am merely saying that sometimes it's easier to just walk around a brick wall of stupidity rather than trying to tear it down.

If you argue with someone who is stupid, you will look stupid yourself i.e. it's best just to smile and nod (and then bitch about them on the internet).

Ah i see. The thing about the internet ya can't hear people's tone of voice. A cause of many arguements I imagine

Never argue with a stupid person.
See my sig for appropriate quote :)

I would basically let her be in her own little world, she aint causing harm to anyone by it, and since it is her choice...again best left to it. But yeah some born again christians lived near me a few years ago, they even ran a small church thingy closeby for a while, never caused anyone bother and just carried on with their lives.

If she's born again does that mean doing her would be paedophilia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭fifth

Yes, they exist, I've met some people like that who don't believe in any kind of touchy feely stuff, or drinking alcohol.. And they're late 20's too.

She is if she's running around telling people off at parties for kissing. if she wants to be ignorant and blindly stupid she should keep her thoughts to herself. All of these people are harmless until they start pushing their sh*t on others - which is inevitably what she'll start to do, if she's already hassling people at parties.

To the guy who said that the OP didn't have a telescope to hand at the party - to quote Richard Dawkins - you don't have to be an astronaut to know the earth is round, or a historian to know Napolean existed - it's fairly common knowledge and more importantly, PROVEN knowledge. nor do you have to have a telescope to hand to assert to someone that the universe outside of the solar system exists. The girl talking about god and no evolution and fluffy beards is clearly the one off her trolley with zero evidence. Someone should put her in a shuttle.

I just don't see how she can ignore all the evidence around her. She believe's in Adam and Eve :P

Well nothing especially wrong with that. It's the non-belief of scientific fact that is more odd in this person.

Well, I should of included that in my post.. I had numerous arguments with one of these people who would get quite upset when I tried to explain the big bang theory.. It's their life and their opinion, I just don't get it.

Except they lobby governments to get their bull taught in public schools. I'd be pretty unhappy if 'Intelligent Design' showed up in my kids' science class.

Absolutely, intolerant fascists are still rock n rolling in 2008.

Your statement that you didn't mind the fact she was a born again christian didn't matter is obviously false, your whole post then goes on to whine about common christian beliefs (except the earth part, I assume she meant the Earth is the central theme, rather than the physical centre of the universe).

Get over yourself and remember that IT and evolution are both at present just educated guesses on either level.
