There'll be no plans anytime soon as it uses DVB-T or freeview which we simply don't have in this country yet on a national scale. As far as I'm aware it's only being tested.

We will see it at some stage no doubt but at this moment it is pointless. The Irish version of DTT is completely different to what they have in the UK. We will be using mpeg 4 whereas the UK don't.

I will be getting one up in Newry, there released on the 19th September, priced £70(roughly 85-90 euro). Also, PlayTV does handle MP4, according to here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayTV .

Nice. May get one myself when DTT is broadcasting locally.

    Interesting. Good, if true.

Pity it ties up a USB port, which are scarce on a 40GB model.

Thats pretty poor IMO.According to wikipedia, even the new 160gb SKU will still only have 2 USB ports. It could do with at least 3 anyway

You could just bu a cheap USB hub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭WarZoneBrother

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭D/C

if any old usb hub doesn't work then it completely goes against everything usb stands for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭pjjk90

I'm using a USB hub(cheap one) at the min and it works fine

If he can receive Freeview, then www.freeview.co.uk will show you the channels he can receive.

Sony have completely crippled this by going back on their promise to allow recorded media to be transferred DRM-free to PSP/external harddrives. Now the only way to watch recorded content is via PS3 or remote play.

I'm sure that was the case originally, then they got a letter from the MPAA & RIAA threatening to sue the f*ck out of them.

But it wouldn't be illegal to allow people to record DRM Free content. There's no DRM on the recordings from Sky+ or any other PVR.

I'm not 100% sure on this but isn't the case in America that nearly all major network content on DVR units is subject to DRM? If so I would imagine the move is just to appease those guys, because they sell their content on to EU providers for the most part so a blanket ban on sharing means no one can grab stuff and upload it (not that it stops anyone in the first place).

I don't think recorded content has DRM in America. Tivo allows you to transfer recorded content to an iPod and a PSP.

Well im getting All the bbcs, all the itvs, the 3 five channels, more 4, film 4, e4, and a few others, unfortunately not all channels are 100% all the time and im missing dave, sky three and a few others!

In Monaghan digital can be hit or miss! It all deepens on your area and your areial! Try a digal box you can pick one up in monaghan town for around €60 and if you dont pick up any channels you can get a refund!

I live in Louth, and I can pick up the same channels as D/C, but I don't have Dave or Sky three either(Didn't know you could get them!).
http://www.freeview.co.uk/channels/ has all the channels listed that are available through freeview

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭WarZoneBrother

got the demo anyone know if you get to watch channels on demo can you get freeview coverage?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Can you watch channels on the demo?

No. You need the Play TV box to watch any channels.

    uhh oh
PlayTV owners in Poland, Ireland and Norway are a little screwed
    dot_clear.gif
Elis has mailed in to let us that MPEG-4 video decoding is used in DVB-T broadcasts in Estonia as well as Poland, Ireland and Norway. Despite, Sony's website stating the PlayTV product is fully European DVB-T standard compliant, it clearly isn't at the moment as it can only decode mpeg-2 video. Elis hopes Sony will release an Official comment on this and confirm whether MPEG-4 support will be added in the future.
    quote:

    Hello.

    A little bit background information:

I live in Estonia and we use mpeg-4 video decoding in DVB-T broadcasts
(so does Poland, Ireland and Norway (soon Finland will follow)).
Although it is said in wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayTV and
Sony's PlayTV official website that this thing is fully compatible
with European DVB-T standard, it isn't. It can only decode mpeg-2
video. So this is important information for citizens who live in the
mentioned countries. Also it would be nice to get a comment from Sony
wheter mpeg-4 support will be added later or not.

    Best regards,
    Elis
    Thanks for letting us know.

Yea I noticed that too, When I put on RTE 1/2, etc(Irish Channels) on PlayTV it says "unsupported data", even though it said on their site it would support MP4. Hopefully they'll bring out an update soon, I miss not having RTE 2 on it

Hmm, that's some fine false advertising. So now we don't actually know if it has an MPEG4 chip in it, and only requires a firmware update, or if it's just MPEG2 fullstop.

    @ Fieldog: No!

Odd then that among the setup languages is Irish itself -and extremely well translated Irish at that. Looks great on Freeview here in Belfast.

shame they did not decide to make the device capable of receaving analog signal through coax or scart in the device as they could of used this product in alot more markets even thought the price of the device would be abit more expensive.

Anyone know when ireland is supposed to switch over to proper digital freeview television if at all?

What's wrong is it doesn't work with a satellite decoder. Never did, never will. PlayTV is designed for DTT/TNT only.

Whats wrong is that you didn't read this thread before you bought the UK only device from UK website.
Play TV is Freeview device not Freesat. Freeview is a digital OTA (over the air) service that you can pick up with a roof-top aeriel in the UK & Northern Ireland.

Freesat is a FTA satellite service run by the BBC & ITV on Astra 28.2 using satellite decoder box.
