I notice there's no society to set up gigs for bands.

I may have to take the initiative when I crash land at Aungier St :)

I maybe wrong but i think there was something in Kevin Street, before i left on work placement, don't think it was called gig soc thought, think it was band soc or something like that.

Yeah I think there was a band society. It was pretty rubbish, then again most of the Kevin Street societies were shyte when I was there :)

Ah, well nevertheless I shall take it upon myself to be involved.

    Gig soc would rock!

Or any society to that effect!

    Only just saw this..

Back before I left (Kevin St 2yrs ago) I ran the Rock Soc for a few years..
We had a good run and It had potential to keep going but due to me having a pretty hectic final year and lack of anybody willing to take the torch from me i think it died out.. :(

I still have some useful contact details lying about (I think If I can find them) If anybody wants to get it kicking again.. Pm me...

Ahh we had some great gigs.. Actually got one club closed down :D
I'd love to see it take off again, but to be honest I wouldn't advise a first year to run a soc. Try to help run an established one absolutely, but it really helps to know who's who in the SU before trying to do it solo..

    Good Luck :)

Personnaly , i would advise a first year to run a soc (as in start one up if there is not one that does what you want )
i did it , and during our first year , our hole comittee was all first year students, so it was a learning experience , but i think it worked well as lots of fresh idea, and willing to try new things, also you will never have as much time as you do in first year , and if your willing to put the hours in you will learn everything very fast , and as for the SU ? I have no idea who anybody is in the SU , its the people in the Socs office who need to know as their a great help.

I'd actually like to get involved in this if it is to go ahead. I helped re-start the Rock Soc in Trinity a few years ago and we were quite successful during my time there. Also, I've ran my fair share of gigs and I find myself playing quite a lot of gigs, so I'm quite aware of how these things go down... also Aungier st. based, so yeah, twud be good to be involved.

Good luck if you do set up a gig soc , in the interest of good realionships with other socs ( i co-run gamesoc),
if you want to IM when you did get set up , i could make up a website for your soc.

Also we where trying to do this last year cause there are quite a few music heads in my soc but if you do get going, contact gamesoc about a friendly guitar-hero/rock band tournment lol ( would be funny to see if people who can actually play the stuff in real life are as good at games, well i am sure the drummers would be)

    http://socs.dit.ie/about.php

Don't know if it will be any help!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭Irishtrekkie

Well what i did , i had to get 20 names signed up , got a commitee formed (6 other people) , and filled out a budget , then printed some posters , and got people to sign up and paid on socs sign up day .

stuff like budgets and other paper work are important ( yes i know they are boring as hell , and i hate been the guy in my soc stuck with them , but too many socs fail cause they dont care enough about that stuff)

Also going to soc training is very important ( and great laugh , i.e. weekend away with all the other socs ).

its not too soon to get started , i know you not even in the college yet, but it would not hurt to go into dit angier street, and talk to the people in the socs office (its down stairs ) ( i know they where not there last week but i think there back now ) they will tell you everything you need to know about starting up.

Great idea for a soc, really needs to be done most promoters around put on pretty poor gigs. I'd definitely be interested in helping out if needed, im based in Bolton St.

I know there is (was last year) a music soc in Kevin St called mu soc, don't know how much they did but they put on quite a decent botb towards the end of last year. I've got the main organizers contact details if you wanna pm me.

It could also be pretty cool if you could collaborate with DJsoc for gigs and have them perform after gigs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,957 ✭✭✭The Volt

    All sounding good to me!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Frankiestylee

You can also set up a gig buddies thing like over in the boards gig section, but have it DIT based.

What about having a website where you have a flash player with some of your members music etc, and a forum to suck people in and keep them involved.

I remember a previous gig soc playing a tiny gig in a closed shop. It was tiny, but looked fun from the outside.

Im in Rathmines doing trad music. As part of the music ensembles society one of the trad players organises sessions on Tuesday nights in Rathmines. Think they shall be starting up again this year.

Yes, there is indeed a DIT photography society.

I didnt join but went out on a few of the juggling society nights out last year. Good times. If you can juggle, join!

Voltwad, I'd be interested in helping out too. I'm in a gigging band, am a music journo *cough* and was vice-auditor in the UCD Jazz Soc two years ago (last year was my final year so didn't have as much input then). I'm in Aungier St for a postgrad so I shall be around. No idea how much work my course will be but I'll help out whenever I can :)

Also, I know some people doing Photography in DIT and they're very very good, so I'm sure they'd be interested in taking photos.

Sound like a good idea, would be a slightly more relaxed environment for the various basement bands in DIT to get out there and start gigging:)
Count me in if you need more people:D

    Hi there

It's the DIT Societies Office. Delighted to see this tread on setting up a Gig Soc. We havent had any official documents that you want it to go ahead.

With the Clubs and Socs sign up days next week I am concerned it will be a missed opportunity. Is has not been confirmed if the Kevin St Music Society is restarting. Either way there is a need for a vibrant gig soc / music soc in DIT. funding is based on the membership level and the planned activities.
There is also extra funding available to run The DIT battle of the Bands and other types of Large events/ activities for recognised societies.

A start up form needs to be submitted
    http://www.socs.dit.ie/downloads/Start%20up%20form0809.doc

Following this you need to book stands in the relevant colleges
    http://www.socs.dit.ie/downloads/Booking_Form0809.doc

Checklist for the sign up days
    http://www.socs.dit.ie/downloads/Check%20Listfor%20festival%2008.doc

There is plenty of support and training event which is an overnight trip.

Please contact us to get this society off the ground. It would be ashame if this type of sociey didnt feature next week and get off to a good start.
    Thanks

    DIT Societies Staff

How come you need names by the 26th yet final application is 7th oct. ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18 DITSOCS

    Hi there
We put a provisional date of the 27th so we would know what new societies would be signing up during the festival. The 7th is the final date so new societies can attend training on the 10th of October.
