How will I get fit without joining a gym?

I'm 5'3" and a size 16, needless to get on a weighing scale to say that I'm overweight. My weight has been going dramaticaly up and down for as long as I can remember. I've never been that interested in sports but I really need to lose weight and become fit. I am French and love my food, and don't believe any of that crap that french women don't get fat, most the women in my family have the same problem. But I don't think this is the problem as I eat 3 meals a day and snack very rarely. I'm lazy and I want to get away from this but I don't know how to motivate myself as I keep making excuses for not going for brisk walks. I am so very conscious of my post pregnacy belly, 11 years after, yes it never went away, and doing sit ups is excrutiating. Joining the gym is not an option at the moment and I don't get much support from my partner who "loves me just the way I am". Please can someone help me?

Why is joining a gym not an option?

If not, buy a bike, start cycling and start walking/running.

You'll get better advice here if you post up a sample of your diet, you may think you're eating well but that's not always the case.
