Stoke V Aston Villa @1.8 (Ladbrokes)

This is the stand-out/banker bet of the weekend for me. Villa put 4 past Man City last week, who are a better side than whipping boys Stoke. Stoke go into this game on the back of a 3-1 defeat away to Bolton, and Paddy Power have already paid out on them to be relegated, after just 1 game of the season. Talk about a confidence builder!

    Thoughts?

Totally agree that this is one to get stuck into and have backed it myself. The 2 things that are negatives to the bet are Villa away and playing against a local team.

Indeed. Stoke v whoever should be in everyones mind this season.

    Blackburn V Hull @ 8/13 (Ladbrokes)

Not quite as straightforward as the Villa game, given that Hull got a 2-1 win at home against Fulham last weekend. Blackburn were strong in their 3-2 defeat of Everton, going ahead, going behind and coming back to win it near the death, and, with that resilience and depth they are looking good for a top 8 finish this season IMO.
The gulf in class between Hull and other Premiership stalwarts will be very telling when they are away from home and lack the support of home crowd surroundings.

Mark Lawrenson agrees, so this is probably one to stay away from:;)

    Blackburn v Hull City

I think Blackburn will win this and therefore have six points from two games, which will be a fantastic start for Paul Ince.

I reckon that Blackburn's win at Everton last Saturday was the result of the weekend.

Stories keep surfacing about the future of striker Roque Santa Cruz but Blackburn are looking to strengthen and not sell. A good start will do them no harm in terms of attracting players to the club.

Hull really kept at it last week at the KC Stadium and were rewarded with a victory over Fulham but playing away from home in the Premier League is very different.

    Wigan V Chelsea @ 4/9 (Ladbrokes)

Chelsea are on fire, having put 4 past Portsmouth(4 different goalscorers) last week at Stamford Bridge, with 3 of the goals coming in the first half. Though this won't be as easy, I would expect a comfortable Chelsea win here. Wigan come into this off the back of a 2-1 defeat away to West Ham, where they conceded 2 in the first 10 minutes and only started playing a bit in the second half, pulling 1 back in the 47th minute.

Given that Wigan were slow starters and Chelsea got 3 goals rapidly last week, Chelsea HT/FT @ evens is tempting for the greedy amongst us.

Lampard makes his 350th appearance for Chelsea, has scored in their last 3 games against Wigan and converted a penalty last week. Fancy him to get him on the scoresheet @7/4 (Ladbrokes).

    Fulham V Arsenal @ 8/13

Arsenal were a lot better than their 1-0 scoreline against West Brom would suggest, as they had numerous good chances and hit the post. They could easily have had 3 or 4. Fulham lost their opening game against Hull and looked awful, so the smart money has to be on them losing to Arsenal 7 days later.

    Last 6 matches

    Fulham 0 3 Arsenal 19/01/2008
    Arsenal 2 1 Fulham 12/08/2007
    Arsenal 3 1 Fulham 29/04/2007
    Fulham 2 1 Arsenal 29/11/2006
    Fulham 0 4 Arsenal 04/03/2006
    Arsenal 4 1 Fulham 24/08/2005

Arsenal (-1) may be an option @ 13/8 for a bit more meat in the sandwich.
Expect Arsenal will get into stride a bit more than last week and put away more of those chances.

    Birmingham (-1) V Barnsley @ 6/5

Birmingham still have most of their players from the premiership, have won their first 2 games and are determined to come straight back up. An easy win should be on the cards here against a Barnsley side that conversely, have lost both their opening games. They won't get off the mark here. Birmingham are 4/9 straight up, not a tempting price, so (-1) for a bit of meat.

    My Weekend accumulator:
    Blackburn @ 4-7
    Arsenal @ 8-13
    Newcastle @ 8-11
    Villa (-1) @ 21-10
    Chelsea (-1) @ 11-10
    €40 returns €1141

    My Weekend single:
    Villa(-1) @ 21-10
    €150 returns €465

Was almost going to do Villa -2 as they are in free scoring form and stoke are complete whipping boys. That's 11-2, really good value, might still stick a few bob on that too.

I'd fancy the top 4 all to win this weekend.
    My bets this weekend are
    1) Villa and Arsenal at 2.71
    2) Liverpool and Chelsea at 1.91 (both Boyle odds)

Also West Ham +1 @ 4/6 (away to Man C) or Double chance West Ham and Draw at same odds, seem very good value

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭wyndham

    Others of interest-

    (Friday)
Derry to bt UCD @4/5- UCD manager is already making excuses about how they haven't played for 2 weeks. Derry are 4th but UCD may need it more as they are relegation end.

Benfica HT/FT away to newly promoted Rio Avenue- 13/8 (I think its on Sunday)

Hannover to bt Cottbus @8/13 (Friday)

i just lumped on arsenal and villa double.

wouldnt be sure enough about other teams, but i reckon these 2 will do the business.
infact 4 draws wouldnt be a bad shout for this weekend.
    spurs v sunderland(draw)
    portsmouth v utd(draw)
    man city v westham(draw)

    pick a fourth from scotland
