    What sort of exercises and training would be very beneficial to help boost performance in gaelic football.

    cleans, squat variations, pressing movements, core work, deadlifts and stiff legged deadlifts would also help

    im always amazed at the amount of gaa players at my gym whos routine consists of bench and as many curl variations as possible - weight training for sport hasnt really been embraced here at all, apart from rugby

    You need plenty of cardio to last the distance. Give an hour 4 times a week. Twice you should do interval sprints with a good warm up and warm down. The other two times you should lift weights, bench press, deadlifts and squats should be your main lifts with maybe the odd cleans and snatches.

    Good God the advise here is really over generalised rubbish sometimes.

    It varies from person to person.

    Just as an example: I am 6'4", I play midfield usually Intermediate club standard.

    My Target stats for next season are: Weight 92Kg (about 6-8% bf), Bench 120Kg, Squat 150Kg, Deadlift 200Kg.

    Where I get most bang for my buck in terms of performance improvement on the field is from conditioning work. I use the rowing machine and do intervals of 250M with 30sec-1min recovery.

    Of course practicing the skills of the game is king but that wasn't your question so I won't go into that.

    If you have a goal to improve your perfomenace you need to know what that looks like, you need to break it down and be able to measure your progress towards that goal.

    Last tip: find a strength and conditioning coach, figuring it out for yourslef will take forever and you will probably get injured along the way.

    Tigerforest I took to training the local Junior football team this year. My first such assignment in GAA circles. I had sever fitness problems at first. However, you do have to delve into it along the lines of what Patto is saying to get the best results. As much as possible try to train players for their positions rather than in general. The general fitness work should be done much earlier in the year. Best of luck.
