Wow! Forget Dunne leaving Today FM its that he gets brekkie on Newstalk that I'm intrigued by.
Newstalk said in a statement it would be a “magazine-style talk show”, covering topical news items, lifestyle, sport and entertainment.

Dunne said he was “very excited” about the move.

Newstalk chief executive Elaine Geraghty said the show marks “a new departure for Newstalk’s morning schedule”.

“We are confident that this new programme presented by Tom in his own inimitable way will continue to grow our national audience.”

Looks like all those posts have paid off in an unexpected way. ;)

    Mike.

Today FM are in trouble! Unless they're planning to keep ray. I mean lots of people hate ray, but he still gets a good listenership, so they probably don't see any problem with him.

Is it certain that it's the brekkie show he's getting - article mentions a "morning" show which could mean the mid-morning slot (up against G Ryan, Tubridy, etc)

I think he means the boards.ie user Tom dunne however this is not the same person as far as i know.

I did ask and got a cryptic response but im pretty sure they are different people.

To be honest i am not an Ian Dempsey fan and listen to Phantom these day.
I do however switch back to Today FM for Ray Darcy and Ray foley etc and some of the Last word (until they do sports) and then back to Phantom.

Both stations are communicorp so this would have been decided at the top I'd say. Word has it that newstalk are joining todayfm in their new offices.

Newstalk press release indicates that it's a 9-12 slot and that it does mark the end of Your Call / Life.

I was hoping this was the end of Claire Byrne but sadly not.

That is big news! Today fm will be losing a popular presenter alrite maybe not a huge listenership puller but still a key presenter.

I presume Eamon 'bear with me on this' Keane show will 12-2 or maybe just an hour like it should be.

    No life or your call?

    Damnit

I would sooner have seen eamon keane or that claire wan go.

I'm really annoyed at this. Loved Pet Sounds on Today FM, and really like Dunne as a presenter. Won't get to listen to the 9-12 slot, but hope it goes well for him as he seem's like a genuinely nice guy.

Ah for gods sake...will noone come up with a decent show for me to listen to instead of Dempsey. Dunne has excelled in the morning slot every time he has done it. Lets hope Dr. Bill doesnt dissapear

Good news for Newstalk...I think it will pull in listeners sick of Ryan and D'Arcy.

Thrilled for Tom Dunne too. Worked with him years ago when he was starting out in radio, and he's genuinely a good guy.

Great one for Tom.. He is perfect for talk radio - very easy to listen to.
TodayFM have just lost a morning listener, and I won't be the only one.

Ironic that it may be Tom's stint on Darcy's show that could ultimately damage TodayFM's morning listenership figures.

Good luck to him... its a fantastic move.

Hmm, big move that... If he approaches this new show like he tackled D'Arcy's when he covered, Ray could lose a lot of listeners...

Radiowaves is only a shadow of it's former self. Not much happening there at all anymore.

Same here. Pleased for Tom D. but I'll really miss Pet Sounds.

Any chance Donal Dineen could get the 7-10 slot on Today FM?

I just hope it doesn't mean that this MODEDITpersonMODEDIT gets an extra half hour of air time

I wonder will we see a change of direction with Today Fm in the evenings. I notice alot of local stations trying out new things after 7 or 8. For me radio has become very mondane after 7 in recent times (except for off the ball of course!) Its so predictable and repeitive.

Tom Dunne has made a great move even if it is to the same building and same company. That decision was made higher up the chain. And it would explain why Darcy's researcher is presenting the show the last 2 mornings in his absence. Brian Mc Coll would have been a suitable replacement.

I'll tune in - I've just not been listening to the radio in the mornings. I've never even considered Newstalk before, but I'll listen to Tom's new show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭Ekels

I reckon he'll be in for Power.

Dunne is far superior to D'Arcy at the morning slot. It'll be healthy competition. I presume there won't be much music, although I could be wrong.

Well done to Dunne also. He left a handy little number there, for what will be a much tougher, but probably more rewarding, gig.

He's a recognized figure, who should boost Newstalk's listenership.

I bet they'll stick in Curtis. I'd prefer Dineen, but it's the real obvious switch if they want to continue in the dull guitar theme.

Not that I think it's the best move.

+1 i hope he pulls loads of listeners too, I wonder as said who'll do the evening show, leagues o toole would hardly get it full time would he?

Finally something to listen to that is good in the mornings that isn't called Morning Ireland.

I feel Boards.ie has been a positive influence on how others view Tom Dunne.

    Good luck Mr.Dunne.

Is the is the start of a general reshuffling of the decks at the two stations? Will one or both end up sounding quite different?

    Mike.

Nice one, I will deffo check this one out. Tom Dunne has been impressing me whenever he filled in for Ray D'Arcy or Ian Dempsey, I shall look forward to this. I feel that the Ray D'Arcy show has gotten stale in recent times, maybe this will also reinvigorate him.

Newstalk has become a shadow of it's former self since it went national, hopefully this will be the start of a return to the quality of Newstalk 106.

I don't listen to today fm at all only when they have a Live football game on,but sounds like this lad Tom Dunne is good so will have a listen to him when he makes the move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭grumpytrousers

Yup - newstalk have a new listener in me from Sep 1. I'm a bit of a music anorak and i like that Tom brought a bit of that to his D'arcy stints; whether he'll be able to continue that on a talk station is anybodys guess.

I'll hazard a note of caution and say that whilst having a onetime pop singer (and i mean NO disrespect in that) present either a music show like Pet Sounds or fill in on the fluffzone that is the D'arcy show is one thing, he might be biting off more than he can chew trying to deal with more straightlaced pure talk stuff without the crutch of the funny anecdotes he used have when he'd play the songs on Today FM

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 985 ✭✭✭spadder

Will it be all talk on his new show? Are Newstalk allowed to play a song now and then?
Tom is great for music interveiws.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭cabrwab

I was wondering this as well, could mr dunne play a little music but mostly talking. I think it'll be interesting if they let him have a bit of fun/banter so listener input will be a big one!

Great news loking forward to it'll change it in the mornings for me at 9. No more darcy i hope

Interesting that Darcy has been off for 3 out of 4 mornings this week. Is the Dunne thing a coincidence, or is there a personal reason for him being off?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭channelsurfer

darcy is off having fun with the lovely roses in tralee for this week. bet he aint too pleased at the prospect of Tom dunne being there when he comes back.

    Ah that makes sense.

Nothing in the rule book which says NT can't play songs but they wouldn't want to go overboard. One for BCI but more importantly, they will lose cred if they start playing lots of songs.

Sean doesn't play songs at all does he?

Good luck to Tom anyway - Denis O'B or Willie O'R clearly are prepared to play musical chairs with staff within the Communicorp group.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 985 ✭✭✭spadder

I think they are trying to create their own versions of RTE 1 & 2.
Newstalk doing the talk shows, arts and politics and Todayfm doing the fluffy pop crap.
Could we see changes around the drive time slots too?
Maybe George and Matt sharing a studio?

Its probably a move or two away, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cooper is one day moved to Newstalk breakfast, completing the 'RTE' model of 2 stations. What we are seeing here is the first stage of integration, moving the Last word to NT would be a second stage move. Similarly, in the future, we could see the Premiership moving to Newstalk.

** Pedantic note ** A couple of posters refer to Tom Dunnes new show as being an alternative to Morning Ireland / Ian Dempsey - as though he had been given a breakfast slot. He is on 9-12, i.e. versus Darcy, Ryan, Tubridy & Kenny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭Im_No_Superman

Looking forward to this, Tom Dunne is an excellant presenter and it will be a welcome change to Darcy, etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 985 ✭✭✭spadder

There are a few presenters that should get a slot too, Fionn Davenport and I think Derek Davis is wasted in RTE, he is a good Joe Duffy stand in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭EdgarAllenPoo

That's great news, means I'll actually have something worthwhile to listen to between 9 and 12. I got so desperate I started listening to Ryan Tubridy. A moment of temporary insanity, honest..no lasting effects, that I know of anyway.

Richard Aldous should get his own slot, anytime he has been standing in I have been very impressed.

derek davis, cathal murray, lilian smith, fionn davenport and richard aldous all deserve bigger and beter roles on the radio.

The new listener figures are out today I think, I'm guessing it'll show no real positive movement for NT

tis a shame - I really like Pet Sounds, and I won't get to hear this morning show.

They had some Norn Irish guy filling in for Tom a couple of weeks back who was pretty good
(*checks today fm website)* - actually it was Paul McLoone, his producer and sometime Undertones frontman. Anyway, he was much better than Dave Couse or Leagues O'Toole who usually fill in for Tom.

Don't think Donal Dineen will get the gig - good as he is, he's not really a crowd puller.
