    Hi all,
I'm not a regular poster on here though I wish to ask for a little help with a computer problem I have.
On my desktop (am using the laptop now) when I click to open explorer it gives me the usual message about being offline/cannot connect to website. Though I obviously have my broadband working correctly as I'm on it here on my laptop and when I go to play poker on my desktop it works, but obviously explorer is causing a problem. I have windows vista (if you need to know). It was working perfectly up until the other day and I didn't knowlingly change any settings.
any advice much appreciated, (i have auto detect settings etc correctly ticked)

Do you use Zone Alarm as a firewall?

Then try "ipconfig /flushdns" in a command prompt to see if your DNS cache is dodgy. If that doesn't make any difference run "ipconfig /all" in a command prompt and show us the results.

Start -> run -> type cmd and hit return.

ok. have tried both several times. a black box appears with writing in it but it goes away in milliseconds. (every time)

Try start -> run -> type regedit and hit return. I'd like to know what that window does.

You can close regedit, I was curious to see if that closed also as it was a symptom of a worm infection a while back. If you go to start -> accessories there should also be an icon in there for the command prompt.

i ran it from there got different result. ipconfig/flushdns said i needed elevation. ipconfig/all is showing a lot of data. i see that it says media disconnected in 2 places. could this be it?

Sounds like you're not admin. Paste the info from ipconfig /all anyway.

Hi try this, open a text editor, type "ipconfig /all ->result.txt" post results of the file if it works

    -

Thay could be the problem go into the network connections and enable the device you use to connect to the web.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

Then look for the lines that mention IP address, gateway and DNS servers.

Try enable one of those media's that is disconnected first, go to your network conections and enable the one you use!

Open a command prompt again and type "ping 194.125.133.10" and then "ping ann.indigo.ie" and see if there's a difference.

Stange that you can play poker and not access websites, maybe something to do with the port.

Try obtain a new ip address ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

    slight difference in results.
    ip address
    minimum = 25ms, max = 27ms, average = 25ms

    ann@indigo
    min-= 23 max 25 average 24

no difference in ip address and ip address for ann@indigo

My suspicion is his DNS lookups aren't working. I suspect the poker app has an IP hard coded.

Have you set a proxy for your web browser? In IE go to tools, internet options, connections and then LAN settings at the bottom. There should be nothing set in this page.

Putting the ip address in the browser windows would tell us quick enough if dns was the problem, would'nt it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

    no proxy set.
    ipconfig/release
errorL unrecognised or incomplete command line. (plus it says some other stuff).

    ipconfig/renew
no operation can be performed on Local area connection while it has its media disconnected.
(i also see that my media is disconnected on my laptop while works great).

    Pinging achieves the same thing.

    There's a space before the /release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

ipconfig /release = the requested operation requires elevation

Did you try go into your network connections and enable that?

Doubt port 53 is somehow blocked on your firewall, try re-set your router(not just turn off re-set) restart your laptop then, worth a try!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

    full tilt
i can also go onto yahoo messenger msn messenger etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

in network connections it says local area connection network cable unplugged. is this it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 177 ✭✭Barrypr

There is soemthing blocking it then, must be firewall or router setting, i no that people have had problems like this with zonealarm but you said you dont use it, other way is hosts file, check dns settings under network connections-tcp/ip-dns

You could put your cable in there connect it up to your router and see, but at the moment you use wireless right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

i dont know how to check dns settings, i cant see it anywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭rynners

only wireless yes. i don't have a cable, never used one. only an external wireless thing that looks like a memory device.

Right click the entry for the network connection in question and choose properties. The DNS settings are the bottom half of the window. Probably set to automatic in your case. Your DNS does seem to be working okay. I agree with BarryPR, something does seem to be blocking your port 80 outgoing traffic. Do you have anything like Nortons or McAfees installed?

it seems i have no problem with my internet connection (No problem showing up on diagnose and repair problem). perhaps i could buy a different internet explorer (say firefox) in the shop and install it. .. would this be worth a bash?

Thay could be the problem go into the network connections and enable the device you use to connect to the web.

If he runs this from the command prompt ipconfig /all>result.txt it will automatically create a file named result.txt on the c:\ drive with a copy of the results.

yes. i was on the net the other day in the morning... went away for a few hours (leaving it on).. came back and any new addresses wouldn't work. since then i logged onto messenger ... and clicked when it popped up that i had mail. this only worked once.. it hasn't worked again (but messenger still works).

Have you restarted the PC yet?

Otherwise you can stick this in a browser.
    ftp://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest-3.0/win32/en-GB/

It's ftp based so it won't use port 80.

i think the problem is fixed. i can get internet on a window now.
when asked if i had norton i was sure i had uninstalled it the other day (and it wasn't down in the bar in the bottom right where it's always been). anyhow i went into control panel and saw it there in install/uninstall programmes.. so i uninstalled it (again!).. now it's completely gone and i've turned on and off the computer... internet works normally now!
perhaps you all know what the problem was ..
and thanks so much for all your help.. you've all been very kind.

You should download & run the Norton Removal Tool so as to make sure it's totally gone.
