    Hey

Well, with under a month to go until it all kicks off, I was wondering if anybody was interested in getting any new societies going? Carlow is very sports orientated, but surely there is some room for a:
    Debating/Politics Soc
    Travelling Soc
(Insert any other type of soc here!)

So, any ideas? Especially anybody joining for the first time in September!

    Cheers :D

    Societies

At IT Carlow students will find a vast array of exciting student friendly societies which cater for a broad range of student interests. Joining an IT Carlow Society provides many students with the opportunity to meet friends with similar interests while taking a relaxing break from study.

Your time as a student will give you one of the best opportunities you will ever have to indulge your interests and try out new activities. Hundreds of students get involved each year in clubs as diverse as Photography, Drama, Paintball, Chess, and many more. Other students choose to join more relaxing pursuits such as Hillwalking, Music, Yoga, or Astronomy.

Special interest activities and course based Societies such as Computing, Marketing and Design prove very popular and are an ideal way to further special interests in an informal setting. In addition many students help organise one off events such as sponsored walks, fasts, rag week and charity events which contribute to the sense of community at IT Carlow.

    Setting Up a New Activity:
Practical support and financial assistance are available for students who wish to set up a new Society/Activity.

how are you commited to these socs? do they interfer with each other or like how do they work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,601 ✭✭✭ShayK1

you sign up on clubs & socs day. pay €2 for membership and then go along to the get togethers.

They don't come hunting you down if you don't show or anything so if you don't like it just stop going. I don't know how much they interfere with eachother, I'm not really into that type thing tbh.

some socs can use the same time as others. sports in particular do this. You just pick the ones you want to do and join. in general they don't care if yuo join later in the year so join whatever takes your fancy when you like :)

is there a photography society? i never knew that. who's running it or what do they do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Sairus

The Art Society is a lie! I should know, I'm the one who started it and desperately tried (and failed) to keep it alive for all those monthes! XD
I think Photography Society died a similar death, but I'm not 100% sure.

There's a bunch of other ones not listed there: Parkour and Airsoft to name a couple, so don't be worried if you don't see something you like.

Sairus, how did you get a society started off? Who do you contact?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Sairus

You just find out who the current Society head is (ask in the students Union when college starts, or check the sheet with the list of important college people they give out) and tell them you want to create a new Soc.
If they approve (which they very probably will if the Soc doesn't already exist) then you just have to show up to Societies Day in the Sports Hall, go to your assigned table and try and recruit some members. Societies Day isn't for a few weeks after college starts, so there's plenty of time to get everything ready.
You'll have to find a room and a time to host the Soc yourself, and you'll generally want to avoid clashing with the bigger Socs, but most of the college is empty after 5pm, so there's plenty to choose from.

For the most part, the college will fund any specialist equipment you need, as long as it's within an understandable price range and you can give them a receipt.

What are you planning on trying to start?

the classic nights have been mon & wed. we will have a meeting sans computers a day or two after the clubs and socs day, to find out different things. we will also be, hopefully, offering a chat room, so this meeting will also include this. the meeting will most likely take place in a102, where the projector is best and making our opening presentation will be better.

if you wish to talk to me sooner, online or in person, i am happy to just pm and i will oblige you best i can.

The problem there is that there's a lot of Societies. It's inevitable that some are going to overlap on others because there's pretty much only the hours of 6-11 Monday-Thursday to work with.
