Impersonating a Garda

Can I ask what the rules are for impersonating a Gardaí, say in a play or something?
Do you need a permit?

I think an application has to be made to the local Superintendent to allow an actor to wear a Garda uniform. Also think that conditions are set that the uniform cannot obviously be used to impersonate an actual Garda such as stopping traffic etc.

Is this for real?! Jesus christ. Imagine spending a night in the cells for playing a garda in a play. I remember it being done in school and nobody having to call the super. What are they afraid of, they'll be made fun of? Make more of a laugh of themselves than anyone on a stage can. I won't even link to the multitude of "stupid garda" youtube videos.

Someone once came up to me in the street after the night club claiming to be an undercover guard. I really should have asked to see his badge. The swine.

The lad in question is a friend of mine, think hes even a member on here, has his interview for garda reserve in a few weeks so hell spot a guard a mile off let alone someone pretending to be one

The permission relates to the use of the Garda uniform and crest in films, plays etc.. that require authenticity.

If you want to put on a dark uniform and cap for a school play or other mickey mouse type show and play the part of a garda there's no problem.

It relates to the fact that you would have an actual Garda uniform and using this could impersonate Gardai on the streets or too commit crimes. It was a very common IRA ploy too impersonate police as can be seen from the Northern bank.

using something similar in a play or fancy dress etc wouoldnt be an issue.

As the word 'Gardaí' is plural, it would be grammatically impossible to impersonate "a Gardaí'. Physically, you could probably only impersonate Gardaí if you are a siamese twin.

any one remember the story a few years ago of a guy who 30 od years ago bought a garda uniform at a costume shop...

on all ireland day he would show up every early and walk in saying he was a garda... go to the toilet and stay there untill the match and watch by the side...

after 30 odd years he was found out in one of the jacks with a garda uniform stuffed in his bag...

fare play to him is what i say to get away with it for so long

SWAT is the only thing you would really see on a vest in airsoft, if someone

came along with garda on it, they'd probably be asked to remove it

Jasus this is mad and I'm not sure if it is ironic, in an Alanis Morissette kind of way, but I know a serving Garda who goes on stage all the time and impersonates an actress... :eek: you should hear her sing, now that's a feckin crime
