I think Caffrey will go - he can't stay after a QF exit. I'd be sad to see him go. It's not like he hasn't brought in new players, but today was very poor. In fairness to him, they did look like they were progressing year on year but that was Tommy Lyons stuff out there today...atrocious.

Usual names will be in the fray: Brian Mullins, Val Andrews, Talty...maybe even Mickey Whelan for another crack of the whip. I wouldn't even rule out Mick O'Dwyer - they offered it to him after Tommy Carr.

I think Pillar will go, I think he's taken the team as far as he can and I doubt anyone could do anymore with what's available.

Four Leinster titles in a row (despite the decreasing value of provincial titles) is a fine record and I think he cannot put any more into the position.

I would be very happy to see Mickey Whelan or Mick O'Dwyer come in for 1 year, while we see how Kieran McGeeney develops with Kildare. He played a long time for Na Fianna and has alot of time for the Dubs. Put his mate Senan Connell in there as number 2 and we will have a bit of northy psychology on our side. Also, those lads might be able to persuade Jayo and Whelan to stick around for next year to play some sort of part.

    Paidi O'Sè to replace him?

Manager Paul Caffrey has resigned as manager of the Dublin footballers following today's 12-point hammering at the hands of Tyrone at Croke Park.
Caffrey, who took over from Tommy Lyons in 2004, offered his resignation after the SFC quarter-final, in which his highly fancied side were never in contention after Sean Cavanagh's first half goal.
Caffrey, who led the Metropolitans to the Leinster title during each of his four years in charge, never took his side beyond the semi-final stage.

Speaking at Croke Park, he confirmed: 'I'm stepping down today after four years in charge of Dublin, and I'd like to praise the players, not only on today's panel, but the players that I've dealt with over the last four years, what they have given to the Dublin jersey and the pride they have put back into the Dublin jersey.'
He added: 'It certainly wasn't how we wished it to end today, but that's football, that's sport and we must accept it and move on.'

Not too suprising. Mick Deegan if the rumours are to be belived is the favourite to take over.

He is gone, unfortunately it wont be him guiding us to the AI. 4 Leinster titles is a good stint though with this group of players.

Sad to see that. Today was certainly not representative of the glamour and excitement they have brought to the championship in recent years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,336 ✭✭✭tonc76

Today wasn't the reason but the fact that DUblin haven't contested an AI final even though they have won 4 Leinsters in a row

Good stint or not we haven't contested an AI final never mind won one since he took over and IMO is simply not good enough.

I'd disagree. We are provincial kingpins and I'd say that we are comparable to Armagh who have 7 provincial titles and 1 AI. We have 5 in 7 years (4 in a row) and I think we will win one in the next few years, it would have happened with or without Pillar.

Dublin defo have provided glamour to the championship over the last few years. Imo i woulnt count Provincial titles as a barometer of potential success look at armagh!

An outside manager is needed someone mentioned Paidi O Se, dont know if he'd win the All Ireland but he would DEFINETLY cut out the showmanship that i despise about Dublin. Can you imagine what Paidi would say if they tried that arm n arm thing against mayo under Paidi. Ha! Lumps ****e kick.

I like the dubs i always said that if my county dont win i'd like to be there to see Croker errupt when the dubs win.

I mentioned Paidi earlier and I would also echo what others have said and would be happy with Micko. I would like to see either of them (or someone else) as they would be able to come in and hit the ground running, I believe that the panel of players that we have at the moment are definitely good enough to win an AI but they are quickly approaching their peak. A great motivating manager might be able to get 1 (maybe 2 at the most, I'm thinking of Whelan particularly) more go at the AI with this panel before someone younger (enthusiastic etc) will have to come in and completely rebuild the team with his own players and plans etc.

He had no choice but to go after today.

I don't wish to be hard on the man as 4 Leinsters in a row is to be commended but he was tactically inept today. Leaving McConnell on the pitch for 62 minutes was criminal and Fennell should've been in for Ryan a hell of a lot sooner!

I would like to publicy wish Piller all the best for the future. Regardless of today he has re-established Dublin as big player in the championship after the 1995-2005 lull which yielded one Leinster Championship.

In his place. I want an outsider Kernan or O'Dwyer would be my choices. I wouldnt rule out either taking the job. However, the Dublin county board have been so insular that the likes of Mick Deegan or Val Andrews are the most likely candidates.

I doubt we will have a new manage for the next three months

    PS RIP Ronnie Drew.

16 August 2008 A sad day for the Dubs

I think Whelan and Sherlock are finihed today. It is a crying shame that between Whelan,Caffery, and Sherlock there is 30 years experience, and only one All Ireland medal.

I wouldnt rule out one or two shock departures. Mabye snap decision which will be reversed in time, but it is possible

I'd love to see Jack O'Connor or Kernan take the job. We need someone who knows how to win because this Dublin team certainly don't.

Anyway I'd like to thank Pillar for all the good days we've had in the past few years. Pity he cpuldn't bring the team all the way

Doubt that. How would they consider changing managers after beating Wex by 23 points!
If Dublin won the all ireland Pillar would be God around Dublin

Pillar was always going to go win or lose Sam.There has been mention of Mick Deegan as favourite to take over as well as Brian Mullins.Other than that,Talty looks to be the next step from the current backroom team although he may want to stay on as selector.

If we were to get an outside manager,I'd be looking for a manager who could not only teach the Dublin players to play open direct football but to also use the swarm tactics that the northern teams such as Tyrone use. This is where we have fallen in 2005 and this year.

If he had left his position this year, which I don't think will be for another few years,I'd be looking to take on Tomas O Flatharta.

I think Pillar should have gone last year. He hasn't brought the team on at all and it's been a waste of a year with these players, and time is precious.

I know Tommy Carr is available and says he wants to return to management. Would the Dublin County Board be brave enough to ask him back?

Maybe an outsider would be the best all round. A fresh voice could be what this team needs (and a freetaker!)

Im not 100% certain that I wouldnt like to see that. However, the split in 2001 was bad, and to bring him back 10 years after he first got the job would be crazy. In terms of trophys won he was the most unsuccessful manager of all time. However after ther 1996-1999 lull he brough some pride back to Dublin football, and should have been on the winning end of the 2001 All Ireland in retrospect. We should have taken Kerry in Thurlas when Wayne McCarthy had the chance.

Deegan is an intermediate coach. I think he may be good in the long run. But in the short term I would rather Micko or Kernan use him in a Paul Clarke Style role, and then he step up to the plate in the years to come.

My Management Dream Team would be Mick O Dwyer, Mick Deegan, Mick Galvin, and one of Jim Gavin or Declan D'Arcy

The dubs cant keep blaming the manager every time they exit a championship.

Id leave him in there personally, he seems to know what he's doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,027 ✭✭✭✭Ace2007

About time too... Caffery was a joker.
No doubt whoever replaces him will be promising All Irelands next year again. :D

Extremely unfair comment - in the last 4 years dublin have lost 4 matches in the championship , tyrone have lost 5 -

I only recall calls for a head to roll came after Mickey Whelan lost to Meath in 1997 after rolling back on his decision to drop half the 1995 team, and when Tommy Lyons' luck ran out vis-a-vis making headlines by bringing wholesale changes to his team, and never substituting until late.

Caffery made the decision off his own bat, and there was little or no public pressure, save for 5 seconds after the match.

Just looking at some threads since Saturday and tbh I had totally overlooked the idea of Joe Kernan as a possible replacement for Pillar?
I've seen him at a few Dublin matches over the past year (saw him at the Westmeath game in Croker, co-incidentally on the same day his sons were in action against Down in the Ulster SFC) both league and champo.
Obviously with Pillar stating the fact that this was going to be his last year in charge; I suppose it would be naive to think the Costello and co have not 'talked' to a few possible contenders, with Big Joe being a likely candidate.
With some of the Armagh boys plying their trade in Dublin over the last few years, he would have the advice there with regard to what's happening on the club scene.
No doubt he has an excellent record. The only problem is; do we want to resort to the Ulster style of play?

    An absolutely meaningless statistic.

Facts are that the Dubs have failed miserably.
Winning a meaningless Leinster championship doesn't count for much.
The simple facts would bear out Tyrone have been facing much better teams than Dublin. Any true test for the Dubs and they have failed.

Haha, why would he leave an up and coming team, to manage a down and out one?

Anyway if he peforms well next year, he'll no doubt stay on at Kildare. And if he performs badly, why would Dublin want him?

    Hands off buddy! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭baztard

Joe Kernan would be the best of the names mentioned so far. The team definetly need a big name and a good motivator to get them going.

Mick O'Dwyer would be great also, but I doubt if he'd be interested in anything other than a short term post (given his age and recent history), which wouldn't suit Dublin at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,313 ✭✭✭✭K-9

Suggesting Kernan or O'Dwyer is mad!

    1. Kernan is Armagh and Cross to the bone. Sacrilege to suggest any other county!

    2. O'Dwyer wouldn't want Dublin.

Trying to think of a replacement and can't think of any off hand. All the best ones seem to have county jobs.

Talty would be a good choice.
