It's a classified ads website, so I'm not sure how much control there is over the sellers. Could be some genuine retailers, but I'd be wary.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,281 ✭✭✭Ricky91t

The easiest way to tell if its fake is by looking at their emai all scammers seem to use hotmail!

its all totally set up iv clicked on 4 or 5 ads all totally fake it looks like its ben set up to look like a buy and sell type of site

If you looking for the best known Legit deals, Komplett.ie is as good as ive found. good service, high quality goods, quick delivery times.

if you do go with this site, let us know how it goes.

I would not let my money go to anyone on that site though, but thats just me.

    best of luck.

would it be worth some rich person buyign one so that it doesnt arrive and ten to sue them for being hoors ?

No. They'll be well outside the jurisdiction of the Irish legal system anyways - probably west africa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭oeb

Also they are using a throw away email address.

They claim to be in Holland, but they have an English phone number.

A hotmail address is untraceable, especially being the fact that they are probably using it from some internet cafe. Moneygram and the like are untraceable. For example, if you set up a western union money transfer to go to my address in Co. Kerry, there is nothing stopping me from picking up that transfer in a western union in West Africia.

Money transfers should ONLY be used to transfer money to friends or family, they should never be used to pay for goods or services. There is no comeback when you get screwed over, any you will. Always pay by something such as paypal or your credit card. Both leave you dispute the transaction if someone messes you around.

    Just above the Email bit of the Ad it states;

AVOID SCAMS - FOLLOW THESE BASIC RULES:
    • When buying or selling, you should meet in-person to see the item and exchange money!
99.9% of fraud is carried out by people who won't meet with you!
    • NEVER transfer money without having first received the goods.
    • BE WARY of deals involving shipping, wire transfer, escrow, cashier cheques or 3rd party payments.
    • If it's too good to be true it usually is!
For further advice on how to avoid scams and fraud, click here.

I have said I will buy a D300 & will pick it up in Kerry, as that is where it's located. :D

A quick Google of their email addresses reveals that if they are indeed in castle island Co. Kerry then they sell to every corner of the earth....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

Interesting to see how this pans out.

Is there a possiblity of these being fakes also? My father in law bought a sony mp4 player for my hubbies for 150 euros being told it was hundreds dearer in the shops, which it was, only it wasnt sony, apparently there are a lot of pro knock offs that even badge their items. The thing was absolutely brutal. I haven't heard of this being done with camera but then again I hadnt heard of it being done with mp4s until then.

I told them I would collect there, I have also googled there address and it shows up on many regional buy and sell sites saying that they are from the relevant country.

I'm guessing castleisland was picked at random.

Suspense is killing me so I have mailed them to meet in person.

Seeming more dodgy though, seriously 3 for 2??? so 3 d300s for less than highstreet prices!

    It's not a deal, it's a scam.

It's exactly because of the mind set 'It's too good a deal to fob off' that people like that are able to con people out of their money. In my spare time I am a magician, and through that I have developed a strong intrest in the 'con'. Confidence games are as old as the hills, and this is a classic one. You present an offer that's 'too good to be true' and you will always get someone who says 'Well it's worth the risk'. It's not.

There is no where in the world that I am aware of where a D300 can be bought for less than 350 euro. Why on earth would someone be selling something at a loss?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭oeb

I'll tell you what, here is an offer for you. If they agree to meet in castleisland (Which they won't) I will happilly go meet them for you. I live 20 minutes away, and I am of a size not prone to being mugged if you know what I mean.

I mailed the Dublin one. I am not really expecting a reply because they prob only want to deal with people who will wire the money.

I really really wanna see what they say though cos I am quite baffled by this - especially the 3 for 2 bit. I'd love to see if they have anything at all!

I am 99.999999999999999 or even 100% sure it is a scam

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 9,047 CMod ✭✭✭✭CabanSail

I have asked to meet them for one being sold in Dublin. I am confident they will show up & I will have a spare body. We can then probably have a Pint & share tales of life in Nigera while I think about the best settings for shots of Porcine Aviators.

What's that phrase about fools and their money being easy to separate?

But, I guess you're only wasting your own time and money. Must be nice though, to have that money to give away to a scam artist.

I guess there are a few people with sense on here, and can spot a scam quick enough.

What a great site, nothing screams 'We are real' like a website hosted on free webspace, selling goods way below cost and having half the prices in euro, the other half in USD, all the time claiming to be based in the UK =/

Was that just a copy and paste? The spelling is all over the shop! I know I'm one to talk but I have this thing, as sad as it may be, I dont deal with companys that find it ok to send correspondence with simple spelling errors!

Can you give me the details for the Canons? I'd love them too:D:D:D

I still havent received a reply anyway!

Payment method - MoneyGram and Western Union -- once you transfer the money, you have NO comeback and NO protection. Nice.

The Visa and Master card images - are links to images on a google search.

It is interesting for a company based in the UK not to offer UK prices (£ Stg).

Oh please. And people here actually think they're going to get something???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭sunny2004

Hands up who thinks this is legit ? come on.. lets be having you !

From the link suppied by Paulw

Statement from the Directors of Mobile Phone World Ltd.

Copied details of Mobile Phone World Ltd and other legitimate companies have been used have been used in the past to perform scams of a similar nature to this.

Certainly do not trust the deal you are offered by this person as they have nothing to do with the legitimate UK based, Mobile Phone World Ltd which has been in operation since 1993 and has an excellent reputation.

The person doing the deal, as someone else has pointed out, has just copied the company details of Mobile Phone World Ltd (maybe from a website) This is evident because the address they have is the registered address which is that of the accountants Shelley Stock Hutter.

This is a common occurrence and unfortunately something which we find hard to combat.

Please, as in this case, always check the validity of the company details and verify as much as you can deals which seem to be too good to be true because they usually are.

    All the best

    Mobile Phone World Ltd
