Looks like Corolla meets Mazda 6 but I like it :D

I like it....a nice slant to the front makes it aggressive looking.

It's a big improvement from the current car, but it possibly borrows too much from the IS200.

Compared to the old (very bland) Avensis, I think it'll make a big difference to sales. The new Mondeo is good looking and the Avensis had to raise the game. The big question now is, is it as good as it looks?

A big improvement but still meh!

Its a nice looker alright, reminds me of the Accord a bit.
Hopefully it does not have to much Peugeot/Citroen parts on it.

This and the new Corolla both look like the new Camry.

Its very nice .Are Toyota gonna slip this one onto the market as fast as they did the last one ?I remember being very embarassed when a workmate was asking advice about buying an Avensis .It was around November (2004/5?) and he was getting a massive discount which more than matched the end of year depreciation so I advised him to buy rather than wait till the folowing January ....Lo and behold a brand new model is introduced a few weeks later !!!Felt guilty talking to him after that !

Theres elements of BMW and VW in there......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭regedit

I do not know if this is the final version or just one of the options.
Have a look at the video that I got on the net. It's from Nürburgring testing of Avensis in Germany. Still under heavy disguise.

Looks about 11 billion times better than the current bland-fest anyways.

I dont like it. Looks out of proportion in about 4 different ways. Look slike th ebonnet should be longer.

Boring and bland - by par for the course for Toyotas.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Bobo78

As most of you already said it, it does look much better then then present model.
Present model looks so ugly and just boring to look at.

I wonder will this be as bland inside? Still, one consolation is that they couldn't have made the drive worse than the current model!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭ytareh

....but current Avensis still better than the current Primera which it seems to have almost buried (like the Yaris has the Micra).Nissan seems to have really dropped the ball in the last few years (apart from maybe the Note and Quashquai?)Tiida is so ugly its a joke ...

Looks good, need more pictures though.

The majority of cars poduced by Nissan are fugly. The note isn't worthy of comment. The cash-cow was an over hyped ugly pretend 4x4 but because people could afford to drive it they overcame the asthetics of it. The 350Z is tolerable but not the nicest coupé out there (by far). I'm not too bothered by large 4x4s so forget about them. So where does that leave Nissan IMO? They are right there at the top of the bland heap with Toyota

I don't think Toyota's are that bland at all, no more bland than peugeot 407's or even the Ford Mondeo both of which looked nice for about a year then look dated.

I think it looks like the Civic from the side profile.

The current one was introduced IIRC in October 2003, and the facelift was a bit of etching on the headlights and a dodgy gear knob.

Can't but be an imporvement, but the current car is still A1 for what people expect of it. A large family saloon that will hold residuals and go forever if needs be.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Huge improvement over the current model imho. That said, the wheels look way too small for the arches, very much like the current Honda Accord
Theres elements of BMW and VW in there......

BMW: yet another copy of the Hofmeister kink. That's all though.

VW: my first impression was it looked similar to the VW Passat. Don't ask me why though!

Looks like something knocked together in Photoshop (albeit by someone with good insider info as to what the new Avensis will look like). A significent car from the perspective of it being a major element of street furniture in Ireland for the next decade or so.

The chromed window surround on this interpretation looks very Mazda 6. Looks better than the current model but that wouldn't be hard.

Fron certain angles the original Avensis was actually quite OK-lookin:eek:g. There was even a nerdy discussion about it on the Gareth Jones on Speed podcast where one of the contributors got an old Avensis taxi and noticed the profile of the car reflected in a shop window...

That photo has been knocking around the net for almost a year now. Hard to tell if it is the final production version.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

Looks out of proportion, seems more corolla size when you compare bonnet/boot to cabin imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

At first glance (very quick one) i thought it was an LS... Looks well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,648 ✭✭✭knifey_spoonie

Well that is the final production model, it will look the very same when it hits the roads, The interior is quite similar to the new model audi's

i dont like it at all. its looks very like the corollla. i think if buying a toyota the corolla would be a better option - nearly as big and less depreciation.
not a looker imo compared to new citroen c5 and opel insignia or even peugeot 407.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

    ... peugeot 407.

Unless there is a new 407 out, i really can't agree with that. The entry models are bland, and the engines are completly powerless, even the "powerful" 1.8

+ 1, I think the windows make it look like the Passat CC. All it needs is another chrome strip.

It doesn't look great. The bonnet is too short which makes the back look bulky. The current avensis are as common as muck there are so many of them around. Why do toyota put small wheels under a big car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭regedit

The car that you see on the photo is a photoshop enhanced picture. The ones in the test world are under heavy disguise. Yes, the one on the photo looks like a Passat I agree.
We will have to wait until Geneva auto show (March 2009 I think) or if luckier even earlier to see.
In the Toyota forum (UK) one guy who works in the manufacturing site posted a few impressions on the new Avensis but than got scared and edited (deleted) all his posts to do with the new Avensis. He said that:
engine line up is the same as current Avensis, the new zr type engine is likely to be available next year sometime, in the auris too. no hybrid engine is planned.
there is now talk of a 2 door coupe version, not confirmed though yet
out of the 4 pics you posted the top one is the closest, not sure on exact measurements, but the estate (wagon) is slightly longer. i cant sit there measuring the car at work, they would ask questions, then i would probably get the sack, i aint risking that
he was referring to the one posted here
the interior is nothing like the auris one (thank god) , it does have a start button like the auris though on some models.

On the engines, someone corrected the "insider"
They really cannot use the current petrol engines which are outdated and paired with 4-speed automatics. I would expect the 1.8 liter Dual VVT-i from Yaris and the 2.0 litre Valvematic, which is already available in Japan.

The Auris already has a ZR-engine, the 1.6 petrol. What are you referring to?

There is actually a coupe version of the current Avensis (built on the Avensis plattform), it´s called Scion tC:

I hope it turns out to be a nice looking a well built car.
From the present family cars (i.e., Mazda 6, Mondeo, Accord or Superb), my money in January might go to Mazda (if they make a 2.0 L engine in the Sports trim available here). I am hoping that Avensis may surprise me.

The Mazda will always be a less ubiquitous and sporty choice as well as a better steer. A 2.0 petrol in Sport mode? That sounds like it could be a very good car but I can imagine getting short shift come trade-in time (given Ireland's continuing obession with getting the biggest car with the least powerful engine possible).

I reckon the 2.0D and definetely the 170 bhp 2.2 D will get the Sport trim for 09. Unless Mazda take pleasure in throwing away Irish custom.

I've completely gone off Mazda 6's. They're just so chromed up and blingy, I'd much prefer an old style Accord now.

Wrong, That is a photo of the production model

The rear is very similar to the new 6, its a cracker in my opinion

im surprised that its a photo of the saloon is being shown, as normally any UK press photos or scoop photos are of hatchbacks. Its like as though the saloon never existed because nearly everyone in the UK buys hatchs and estates more than saloons.

I spoke to Mazda Ireland a few days ago and they said that they were considering their options but even if they do release the 6 in a Sport trim, one will not be able to order it be4 January 2009.

I really do not know this but the above pic has been around since February 2008. Looks fine for me TBH

    read this on youtube:
The car is coming to the UK December 2008 But may be launched officially Q1 2009. The Dealer network will get it before December as production in the UK Derbyhsire plant has just started. The car will be available in Diesel T180 6 speed auto too for the first time and I have seen the actual un-masked car... it looks excellent actually!!
Everything you say is right. I've seen it unmasked as well. Beauty. Drives even better than how it looks.

The Scion TC is a beautiful car..which is amazing as I never liked the Avensis.

If Toyota make a beautiful Avensis I will well and truly eat my hat, Toyota is one company that has an uncanny ability to engineer out desirability, I don't expect this to be any different.

Which is why they (Toyota) led the manufacturers sales with something like 15% of all new car sales in Ireland in 2007 with Ford being the next closest at about 11.5%.

Clearly, those purchasers didn't desire the cars at all!!

What rubbish - the majority of people buy something to get them from A to B, that is economical and has a reputable name. If the public had any idea about desirability then Nissans wouldn't sell!

Rubbish? I think you've shot yourself in the foot there.

Desirability is a broad term. People have a desire to get from A to B, economically and without a breakdown! This is as important as the aesthetics of a car and contribute to its desirability. Indeed the aesthetics of anything (or anybody for that matter!) is a matter of personal choice. While nobody would deny you your right to class the Toyota range as bland or whatever, other people might consider them aesthetically pleasing.

Thank God we're not all the same.
