    Hi HouseHippo,

Dont worry too much, they will take loads of details (questions and answers) usually they will take your blood pressure (that thing they put around your upper arm)

If they do a smear test, its usually done using a thing called a speculum, which seems to come in different sizes. Its a metal thing but designed not to hurt you, its to allow them access to the cervix....so that they can use the little wooden stick thingy to collect a few cells from the cervix (neck of womb)

When I first saw the speculum thingy I was well scared, but it will help a lot if you relax its much easier, I know its easier said than done but if you have to ball your fists or bite on a tissue or something it helps.

Where I go they always have a girl nurse who talks to you to distract you at the appropriate moment, asking you where you will go on holidays while the aulfella with the ice cream scoop yoke is tinkering down below is a bit surreal but its over very quickly and does not hurt at all !!!

Try to relax -it will be ok!!!

    Spooks ;)

Wear a skirt and comfortable knickers and bring panty liners, if you are having an internal exam.

My Dr now has the speculum in plastic, and its much easier and smoother, other than being a bit uncomfortable its fine.

You don't have anything to worry about, and trust me you'll get used to your visits as you get older! ;) It'll be just like going for coffee! lol

Thaedydal's advise is good as always. :)

I had my first visit just recently. It's a little scary, if you aren't pregnancy, as you generally get referred to them when alls not well (in NZ and Ireland anyways).

My gynae asked me general questions like when was my last period, whether I was in a relationship or not, went through the list of symptoms of endometriosis (she specialises in it), asked whether I was on the pill or not etc. After that, it was a quick examination of the area. After which she went down through the possibilities, gave me a hug and reassured me :)

It was a positive experience for me so I hope Hippo that it'll be the same for you.

    A.
