This was originally going to be a thread on "what's your 'close to perfect..' TV Show?". Or simply put, what show in your mind will never be topped? But it turned into me gushing about my particular 'close to perfect..' show.

So thought it'd be better to make a TV Show Of The Week thread for it.. hope Dave doesn't mind.

Mine is not a real suprise to any regulars on the forum.. but I've been re-watching 'Freaks and Geeks' this week and I don't think the show will ever be topped in my mind. The leads are all top-notch, the script is still hilarious, very fresh and true-to-life and the music is fantastic - Styx, Van Halen, Santana, Rush, Cream, Cheap Trick, Queen, Journey and Lynyrd Skynyrd to name but a few. The use of music oftens, in my opinion, serves as an extra character on the show in how it's used so well. A perfect example would be this scene..

To setup the scene, Sam is one of our "geeks" (who enters a minute into the video) goes to the Homecoming Dance to get a promised dance from a girl he likes (Cindy). He's been told by his friends to pick a slow dance.. for obvious reasons. So just wait for the perfect tempo change when arriving on the dance floor...

It's one show that keeps springing to mind in that it never produced a weak episode.. every episode stands up on it's own merits and there's not one episode in the bunch that I didn't absolutely adore.

Also great to see some now famous actors in early roles - from the leads.. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segal. But also supporting actors who featured like Ben Foster, Shia LaBoeuf, Jason Schwartzman and David Krumholtz.

Terrific show. Not particularly well known over here but I remember watching it when it was on RTE 2 about 7/8 years ago and then the late night re-runs about 5/6 years ago.

As mentioned, very witty and superbly acted and written.

Unfortunately not.. I bought the Region 1 DVD the very day it was released in the US (will never be released on Region 2). Cost me about 40 euro from CDWOW but worth every cent. Every episode plus extras galore. Listing of the extras on the 6 disc set below:
isc One: "Pilot," "Beers & Weirs," "Tricks & Treats"

    • Five audio commentaries with actors Linda Cardellini, Jason Segel, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, Samm Levine, writer J. Elvis Weinstein, director Jake Kasdan, the parents of Daley and Sarah Hagan, Judd Apatow, Paul Feig, and several Freaks and Geeks fans
    • Seven deleted scenes, alternate ending, extended scene, and outtake
    • Audition footage of Cardellini and Segel
    • Four NBC promotional TV spots

Disc Two: "Kim Kelly is My Friend," "Tests & Breasts," "I'm With the Band"

    • Six audio commentaries with actor Segel, writers Mike White, Gabe Sachs, and Jeff Judah, directors Lesli Glatter and Ken Kwapis, "Fredricks," "Kowchevski," and "Rosso" (actors commenting in-character), Apatow, Feig, NBC and DreamWorks Television executives, and production and crew members
    • Three outtakes and an alternate cut
    • Audition footage of Daley, Starr, and Levine
    • Behind-the-scenes footage

Disc Three: "Carded & Discarded," "Girlfriends & Boyfriends," "We've Got Spirit"

Watched this one recently after listening to old Basquilley banging on and on and on about it. Definitely enjoyed it, a lot for the fact that it's one of those few "teen" shows (ugh, but you get the idea) that actually has believable teens. It brilliantly captures the complete awkwardness of youth where everyone is not glamorous or witty but struggling to cope with the changes they're experiencing.
I relate to Sam too well in many ways.

Good acting here too - well above par. Seth Rogen's dry deliveries of wit stand out the most.

That it got cancelled is a shame but maybe it would have just dragged on too much if left to continue and we would have been worse over all. Yes, that's the lie I'm now telling myself.

Best show ever. I love Freaks and Geeks. One of the only shows that I could watch the same episode back to back and still find it hilarious. Everyone on the cast gave it socks and it's obvious they all had fun filming the show, as all the primary cast and most of the secondary cast did the DVD commentary. Seth Rogen is hilarious as Ken and I always felt his character was underused at the beginning of the series. At least he got a lot more screentime in the last couple of episodes. Martin Starr is awesome as Bill. It's so weird when you look at him in Knocked Up and Superbad compared to Freaks and Geeks. I can't understand why this show wasn't renewed for a second series and I probably never will, I guess it just has to be put down to, people who don't like Freaks and Geeks are complete idiots.

By the way, anyone who has never seen Undeclared, should look it up. It was the second attempt from the Apatow Gang to make a TV show after F&G failed to continue. Seth Rogen is in the main cast, Jason Segel is recurring, and Busy Phillips, Samm Levine and Martin Starr guest star. Again, it only lasted one season, but it's just as awesome as Freaks and Geeks.

Undeclared was top-notch too alright.. purchased the Region 1 DVD of this last year. Equally chock full of extras. Jason Segal steals every single scene he's in as Eric!

Couldn't say it in my last post, but it's ok now to say that I met Seth Rogen today and had a 20 minute interview with him. Naturally one of my questions was whether or not there would be a Freaks and Geeks and/or Undeclared reunion show and Rogen said that he did not think that would be likely, but also said he got on really well with both casts, except that he had no idea where Timm Sharp (Marshall on Undeclared) was these days.
Anyone know what Timm Sharp has been up to?

Judging from his IMDb, he's keeping busy doing supporting roles on films and a few appearances on TV shows.

I can't give this show enough praise. I love it and miss it. And it gave birth to some of the funniest Canadian actors of all time (Seth Rogen, Jason Segel...)

little known fact (ripped off imdb): Jason Segel's character in How I Met Your Mother was based on Nick in Freaks and Geeks because the creators of himym were such big fans.
Anyone else let down a bit by Undeclared? Seth Rogen is great but the central cast in general is weaker than freaks, although Loudon Wainwright and Segel save every scene they're in.

Undeclared is good in it's own right. It was never gonna be as good as Freaks, but it's good all the same.
Rogen obviously is the best, but I really like Baruchel, Hunnam and Keena as well. Not a huge fan of Sharp or Gallo, but they do a good job all the same.

Only one of the original cast will return AFAIK AFAIK AFAIK. Samm Levine AKA Neal Schweiber

Don't believe everything you read in the Metro.
Having spoken to Seth Rogen in person, not so long ago, he claims that there is no Freaks and Geeks reprise/reunion in the making.

That should be more than enough proof.

If its not on the net then its not proof :D

    Anyway back to the show.

This is the most representative teenage drama from the USA. Even the excellent "My So Called Life" doesn't come close to it, "My So Called Life" really began the "intelligent" teen drama, where characters would use over the top English to express their feelings at every chance they could get. It unfortunately lead to "Party of Five", "Dawson's Creek" and "Falicity". Each trying to be intelligent and trying desperately to suggest that the lives of teenagers are hugely important and that High School Crushes are and will always be life or death.

"Joey, I can’t live without you, what will I ever do" Joey and Dawson look at each other while making faces at each other, the camera spends ten minutes wait for a reply from joey, who looks frightened and scared when she is trying to seem in total awe of Dawson's chin.

I love the opening episode of Freaks and Geeks which makes the audience think that it is another teen drama. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai1FHufz_HY

It is actually something that hasn't been repeated in teen or even family dramas. While both “Chris” and “Malcolm” come close to realism, often they just play happy families, where the sons and daughters come good and you know they love their parents, it would be unusual to see either show end on a bad note.

You could point to the Weir Family in Freaks and Geeks as playing happy families but both Sam and Lindsay are changing their attitudes towards their lives, Sam is going from child to teenager and he is played excellently by John Francis Daley who played the role of fun loving child and geek who (if another series had been commissioned) would have start being a bummed out teenager. Lindsay’s life is changing, her attitudes not only to her old friends but also to her new friends. Her relationship with Kim Kelly (Freak) and Millie Kentner (Geek) outlines these changing attitudes.

What I most like about this show is the acting, it is flawless. I haven’t see such good acting in Teen drama and to be honest I don’t think I ever will. Unfortunately there won’t be another Freaks and Geeks on TV (I am wait for the movie, 2009 :))

Undeclared also made a brave stab at the writing that should have changed the way teen drama/comedy is written.

Unfortunately they are bringing back 90210. I cann't wait for The "The OC" Movie. I just cann't :(

It was dissappointing to see Busy Phillips turn up in Dawson's Creek. These actors should be working now, it's rare to see them in anything. Linda Cardalline is in ER, Seth Rogan continues in film as does James Franco. But what about the rest of them :(

Sorry to ressurect this but this show is without a doubt one of the best TV shows I've ever watched.

You can see them all on Youtube although a couple parts are muted thanks to copyright infringment. Damn WMG! It's not so bad though.

Glad to see all of them are leading successful lives in Film and TV.

**SPOILERS HERE for anyone who hasn't seen the whole thing yet!!!**

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I just finished watching this, and I already miss it! :(

It was a slow burner for me, I wasn't instantly hooked to the point of infatuation by the first few episodes. I sort of felt that the characters were fairly obvious stereotypes, typical of a high-school comedy/drama, but I'm so glad I stuck with it, because I was so impressed with the character development throughout the 18 episodes.
I think this is one of the smartest things about the show: just like the characters within the show, we the audience (or at least I) saw the different groups initially for their superficial attributes (the apathetic "freaks", the Weirs' strict parents, etc.) but as I "got to know them better", learning that each character was a fully-formed, three-dimensional person (for example, how the Weirs treated Nick when he stayed in their house, how cool and funny the "geeks" actually were, the family lives of Daniel and Kim, and even - I loved this - how the seemingly sweet and perfect Cindy turned out to be a boring, humourless Republican, and Sam actually broke up with her!)
Obviously there was a lot more to the show, and the individual characters than just that, but I thought that was a brilliant aspect.

Gonna start watching Undeclared and see how that stacks up against it! I've watched the first episode, hope to see more Jason Segel in it, he was even brilliant just being on the other end of a phone for chrissakes!!

The music in Freaks was great as well, as Basq pointed out. Particularly enjoyed hearing some songs I hadn't heard before, from XTC, J Geils Band and a few others, as well as the classics from Supertramp et al. Nice original music from Michael Andrews (of Donnie Darko fame) too!

Nah! Freaks and Geeks can be dragged up anytime. I never saw the characters as stereotypical at the beginning of the series.

    McKinley High 2011 SUCKS.

Must say what a superlative TV series "Freaks and Geeks" was, watched every episode in about 2 days. Felt Busy Phillips deserved a place on the opening credits at Seth Rogen's expense given that her character is far more important and frequent in the series!

Fills my heart with sorrow that great shows like this, "My So Called Life" and others are cancelled by spineless network suits whereas shows like "The Simpsons" (which has been dire for at least a decade) continue to be produced no matter how mediocre they are!

She wasn't going to be a cast regular and the studio wouldn't pay for her to be on the opening credits or something.

    San Francisco Sketchfest 2008.

    More details here.
SF Sketchfest: Freaks and Geeks Speak!

Ian Lendler, our man in San Fran, gives his second report from the Sketchfest. Freaks and Geeks may not seem like a natural for Dead-Frog, but this is exactly the show I would have picked as well.

It’s good to catch up with old friends. That, in effect, is what several hundred of us did at Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco over the weekend, when we attended a reunion of the cast for one of the greatest television shows ever made: Freaks And Geeks.

Again, with such an unbelievable line-up on offer during the San Fran Sketchfest, it’s incumbent our Your Dead-Frog Correspondent (YDFC) to justify why he chose this event over, say, the wildly popular Match Game with Jimmy Pardo, Patton Oswalt, or the newest latest thing, Whitest Kids You Know. So why, out of all of these did YDFC choose Freaks And Geeks?

Well, you could argue that the Judd Apatow school of comedy (which is actually the James Brooks school of comedy…discuss…) now rules Hollywood. 40-yr-old Virgin and Knocked Up were easily the best comedies of the last few years. And Freaks And Geeks, as creator Paul Feig remarked during the show, was the prototype of shows that have become gospel in the last few years. With it running story lines, mixture of comedy and drama, and large cast of characters that evolve from episode to episode, Freaks and Geeks could easily fit in alongside Lost, Sopranos, Mad Men, and The Wire.

You could argue all these things. But why bother? The reason YDFC went to this shows was that Freaks and Geeks kicked ass. And YDFC, like the hordes of fans that have driven the Freaks and geeks cult, wanted to glean any information that could shed light on how the show managed to kick so much ass.

But as moderator Patton Oswalt noted, we talk endlessly about the greatness of this show, but that’s not why we were at Cobb’s and that’s not why anyone is reading this now. So let’s get to the good stuff:

The participants in the show included creator Paul Feig, Linda Cardellini (Lindsay), an unrecognizably tall John Francis Daley (Sam), Samm Levine (Neal), a very possibly stoned Martin Starr (Haverchuck), Busy Phillips (Kim), David Allen (Mr. Rosso, who’s character, due to legal reasons, was almost named Mr. Del Monte), and Steve Bannos (Mr. Kowchevski)

    So what did we learn?
    • Paul Feig is the unluckiest man on earth. Anyone who has read his memoir, “Superstud”, will know that the majority of the most embarrassing moments from the show (Sam’s Parisian night-suit, Lindsay’s car accident) were taken directly from Feig’s life. But it was revealing to learn that every moment on the set when Feig was in charge managed to devolve into slapstick disaster. When Feig organized an on-set softball game, actor John Daley took a fly-ball directly to the face, delaying shooting. And Feig was directing the scene (in “We’ve Got Spirit”) that sparked an actual brawl between James Franco and Busy Phillips. Though they’re now good friends, Franco and Phillips notoriously hated each other during the shooting, a fact which the writers gleefully exploited to get more tension out of their scenes together.
    • Even better, we learned the direction that characters might have taken if their had been a second season. Paul Feig knew exactly what the first scene of the second season would have been: Lindsay at a Grateful Dead show on a stretcher having a bad acid trip.
    • The Geeks were going to go their separate ways: Haverchuck, under the guidance of Coach Fredericks (the thinking man’s Mr. Woodcock) was going to turn into a jock. Sam was going to start to hang out with the popular kids. And Neal, well, Neal was going to stay a virgin for a loooong time.
    • But perhaps the best potential story-line was that Kim Kelly, under the increasing influence of Millie, Lindsay, and her experiences following the Dead, was going to a) try out for the school musical b) get cast and c) become the school’s theater geek, much to the bemusement of all.
There was general gossip of the “wasn’t it fun being on set together?” sort which is always fun to listen to but doesn’t really read very well in print, so YDFC will spare you.
The floor was then thrown open to some surprisingly nut-job-free Q&A. The only fairly dull question being: “What are you guys doing now?” (Answer: That’s what imdb is for. Stop wasting everyone’s time. Although it must be noted that Feig’s answer, “I’ve got a series of young-adult sci-fi novels coming out,” took everyone by surprise.)
However, the answers (ER, Bones, the writers’ strike, etc.) weren’t as instructive as the fact that every one of those actors have gone on to totally decent careers. It’s rare feat for a cast that included three 14-yr-olds and a bunch of 19-yr-olds to go on to bigger things (just ask Gary Coleman and Danny Bonaduce). And it provides some clue as to the show’s enduring qualities.
Paul Feig, Judd Apatow, and Mike White set out to create a show in which teenagers were portrayed as they actually are— awkward, gawky, frustrated, and misunderstood. There were no snappy one-liners. No witty repartee. So was it any surprise that when they asked a cast of teenagers to just be themselves, that’s exactly what they got?

An absolute travesty that this excellent show gets dumped after one season while crud like Two and a Half Men went on...and on...and on...and on....until all the 'winning, tigerblood' nonsense thankfully ended it.

Bill Haverchuck was a superb character as was Ken (surely the most sarcastic character in TV history, not counting the sarcastic priest on Father Ted obviously).

I think a second season would have concentrated on them much, much more. Oh the possibilities...:(

Freaks And Geeks or the Paleyfest linked to above?

If you mean 'Freaks And Geeks', it had a fantastic Region 1 release - see details of it here.

It's a must-buy for the sheer amount of special features alone.

Been meaning to get this since it was released... I've already got all the episodes, but I'd love to have the special features as well...

My brother worked on two episodes of it. I remember being so jealous at the time that he got to meet Biff Tannen.

Which episodes? and doing what? and you should interview your brother about it and post it here :)

Not sure which episodes but I'll ask him. He worked in the camera department, ended up there via a FAS Screentraining Ireland camera course.

Although James Franco fans should be warned, he didn't come across well on set (or on the set of Tristan and Isolde when it shot in Ireland either from what I've heard!)

I've met Franco (albeit very briefly), but he came across as incredibly sound to me... Also Seth Rogen, whom I met on the very same day (and got to spend some time with) is a true legend...

I've worked on film and tv sets and its an incredibly stressful environment, so its unfair to judge someone on that.

What a show, think I've watched it all the way through four times. It's not just one the best comedies ever on TV, it's one of the best shows ever. Bill Haverchuck is a TV icon in my books.

I hated that this show was cancelled whilst at the same time feckin' 'Dawson's Creek' was allowed to fester.

Surprising to see Busy Phillips appear in Dawson's Creek in a complete different role, just showing she could fit into any show.

Also Monica Keena from Undeclared had a fairly substantial role in 'Dawson's Creek' too.
