A new respect for Tyra Banks (vs the crazies from Westboro Church)

It's always hard to find good interviews with those who share such extremist views because usually the interviewers are unable to separate their own anger or biases against the groups from the process. Thus, they tend to feed of the anger of the guests, and really only feed their ego when they become impatient with them. Tyra, though, manages to keep her cool for the most part. I think, though, Tyra does a nice job of disarming them, and uses a good bit of intuition on her part when interviewing the kids. It's worth the watch.

No offence, I don't think the video can be classed as celebrity & showbiz. Yes it's a talkshow, but it's a serious matter, Banks showed her chops as an interviewer up against highly controversial subject matter. But you're the mod, you know better I'm sure.

As Banks said, it's such a scary thing. They spew venom when they talk of how one must live according to their beliefs, but then they are normal girls when not talking about religion.

I've moved this back over to AH cos it's not a celebrity topic. It's more about what the crazies from the Phelps family have to say rather than about Tyra herself.

I think Tyra does an ok job interviewing them but the whole thing is just giving attention to a group of people who really shouldn't be getting it. The mum at one point says that there's 70 people in the church, and most of them are related to Fred Phelps. For a group of 70 people they sure get waaay too much media coverage for their extremist views.

I wonder how that nutter of a mother would feel if one of her daughters got rubbed out?

What I find apparent is that the mother is delusional, the daughters are just reciting the mothers teachings but from their body language I dont believe that the daughters fully believe what they say.

Heh, love your sig, bravestarr! :D

From what I've gathered, Fred Phelps (the woman's father) was a mean bastard to his kids when they were growing up. Very violent and viciously tempered. It seems he scared them into submission (well those who aren't estranged from the family - there are a few "fallen" members).

The man is clearly a homosexual.

I have to disagree - she did everything you just said that she managed to avoid. Interviewers are not supposed to shout at their guests - if an interviewer does not shout at a guest its not some incredible feat to applaud - its a sign they are aware of the basics of how to do their job with a shred of impartiality.

Having said that she does actually start shouting and talking over her guests in a blaze of self promotion/'im with the audience & we think your a wackjob' type binty guff.

Maybe, she should have done what Dr. Phil did to the "Bumfights" guy and kicked them off the show..?

Dr Phil is a retard... says he won't advertise that kind of stuff after he's already shown it. I never knew there was such a thing as bumfights till i saw that!

Well you know what to do. Go start a site dedicated to bums fighting each other for sandwiches and when you become rich and famous say that you seen it on Dr Phil's show.

Ah no those are some of her best moments. The charisma and intelligence that shines through is great. I was watching it at the Beijing shoot, and she owned the entire forbidden city. Not too many you could say that about, tbh.

That's what why I said for the most part.:) And plus I can understand why she lost the head at that moment, the mother was accusing Banks of not letting them talk but she was being allowed to talk, and that's why Banks took offence.

If you look at Brian McNair's Introduction to Political Communication, it's all too common for interviewers to lose their cool in these situations. Instead of asking the questions they tend to feed their own ego by trying to be "cutting" and "sarcastic" with the guest. Take Jeremy Paxman for instance, all too often he tries to pove that he is "smarter" than the guests and shouts down to them instead of actually asking the right questions. And he's a respected Journalist!

P.S. I knew After Hours was the right place, I know my ****.:D:p

Ha ha, fight controversial with controversial.

What was hilarious about the video is that he ran away from the reporter, and he hid behind "his women".

I'm sick of the amount of attention these people get. They're about a dozen wackos ffs. I propose a moratorium on discussing them here. What more is there to say exactly?

It's a different interview. While the likes of Jeremy Kyle strokes his ego when talking to this family, Banks did none of that. And Banks style of interviewing actually managed to show those two girls in a different light from religion. Outside of their hate filled religious statements, they were smiling and talking about what they do outside of their religion, normal things, and that's why it is really disturbing.

    That's why I posted it.

Jeremy Kyle, Tyra Banks, Louis Theroux and god knows who else-it all boils down to the same thing; they're an easy subject for the media to wheel out cheaply for a bit of controversy and an easy topic for someone to start a thread guaranteed of a few replies. They're f**king nuts-we know that but they are tiny in number and have absolutely no influence on anyone outside of their little bubble.
They just want attention; that is why they do those pickets. By constantly rehashing the same interviews and features (and threads here) the media are playing into their hands.

serious question here... Does that mean that they hate christians? (not sure the differance of baptist)
Like... would she say that the christians are going to hell also?
Is it just the 70 of them going to heaven? (if so, im happier else-where..)

    Don't patronise me please.

Banks did something strange for a situation like this and did not take the holier than thou attitude for the most part. She did a more than credible interview. Why? Instead of outright attacking to score points with the audience (the norm) she gained insight into the minds of these people.

I have given my reasons why I posted it and I don't have anything further to say to you.

(Most) religions believe that if you're not a part of their church, you're going to hell. So since nobody can be a part of every church - we're all going to hell.
