    Hi Folks,

Are there many on here doing this run on Saturday? This will be my first time to run this distance so fingers crossed. I am hoping to get home in around 80to go under it will be a huge achievement.

In terms of the distance I assume there is no need for any fuel apart from a good breakfast that morning and to make sure to get fluids on board at the water stations?

Anyone do it last year? Any advice?

    StMochtas.

I'll be running it too. Hoping to finish between 85 - 90min.
Hope that there is a good crowd there as it normally makes for a better race & athmosphere.

Not done a 10 mile race before myself, hopeing to be able to get below 1:15 in this one though.

The course map is now up on the marathon site here.

I've registered for this but haven't done much in the past week or 2 with the problems with the shins. But jsut abck from a 5mile now and no pain at all, so I will see later in the week might jsut jog around.

Did it last year in 8824 and have not done a 10m race since. Hoping for under 85 this time.Weather is so dodgy though it's hard to predict.worst thing is running on the footpath second time round down Chesterfield as you cannot overtake easily without going on the grass which will be muck on saturday.Good fun last year though and looking forward to it after staying off the drink this weekend.

I am also doing it, first time to do this distance and hoping to finish around 1:20-1:25 but my longest run in training has only been 8 miles last weekend:eek:.

Will have a good breakfast and will take it easy for the first half, get some fluids on board on the way round and hope the adrenaline will get me there:D

Remeber having trouble getting past people on the second lap of the half a couple of years ago, I'd gone really slow on the first lap but then was overtaking loads of people on the second one but was running most of the way back down along the grass.

What kind of training are people going to put in this week? I feel quite tired today after a 9-mile yesterday so I think I may keep things to a minimum this week, maybe 3-4 mile easy on Wed. and some strides and jogging Thursday.
I was supposed to do a decent run tonight but I feel it might be better to rest.

Just signed up, will be hoping to go around in 80, fingers crossed!

I see the race number pickup is in Lifestyle Sports in Blanchardstown Fashion Retail Park - anyone have any ideas where that is?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,146 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

You can get you numbers from Castlenock college on the morning of the race as well, which is where all the carparking is, so you don't need to head to the shopping center beforehand.

Lifestyle is in the same section as TK Maxx and Atlantic in Blanch' not sure if that helps.

Did a 9 mile yesterday too. This week I was going to run a REAL slow 3 mile tomorrow and the a 5 mile on Wednesday or Thursday. I don't know if this is good advice though, because I never know what to do the week before a race.

Did it last year in 1:35 while still very new to running.
My advice would be to run the first 5m at pretty much 5m run pace as you have 2m downhill at the turn at the top of the furze road halfway around.

The tough parts are between miles 3-5 and 8-10 so bear that in mind if going out too fast.

Did Streets of galway in 40 and a half mins there on Sat so hoping to go around in under 85, 10 mins off last year would be good progress.

    This week i'll be mostly:

    Mon: Recover from weekend away
Tues: 10m course in the pheonix park
    Wed: Rest
    Thursday: 10k
    Friday: Rest
    Sat: 10m

i'm doing/have done this in prep for sat :
    Last thurs 10m--pb for me
    fri 2m
    sat 2m---legs gone
    sun off
Today 5m hilly --as fast as i can
Tues 3.5m of the course --the hilly part
    wed 2m flat
Thurs,Fri off and hope to be right for Sat. hope this is ok

If I could run 1:35 this weekend i'd be really happy. Macmillan says about 1:25 but I've missed some training the past few week so will start out slow.

Well I'm meant to be doing it, was hoping for around 80 minutes but I start basketball pre-season training this week and fear that's going to tire me out before the race and ruin my plan. Going to have to re-schedule my running completely now that basketball is back on. :(

"During Saturday another Atlantic depression will come close to Ireland. That will give more torrential rain, cloudbursts and downpours and lead on to more flooding." (met éireann) Raheny had the best race weather this year and that was in January!! :o

It does indeed, cheers for the info.

I live near the Park and was going to avoid Castleknock College in the morning and just jog to the startline...

Thats is exactly what I am doing too as eventhough the college worked well it is an extra hour needed in the morning. Good luck with the run.

Looking to do it myself although its a very slow course with the hills etc.If it lashes we will be in serious bother. Is it just me or is anybody else finding it hard to get their training in with this ****ty weather?.It is like winter and all I want to do is comfort eat and stay in the pub!

Glad it's not just me. Need to get out of the habit of being pissed off with the weather and just go out when it is nice instead of taking the risk of the weather still being ok 'tomorrow' or 'in an hour'.

The weather screwed me over this evening too... gym membership maybe isn't such a bad idea, over the winter at least

I just left my gym, because it was summer, and threadmill running is soooo dull. :(

Ventured up to the park after work yesterday evening only to be greeted by the cats and dogs type showers that have become the norm.

Managed to do half the course, finish line to finish line including the hills so happy enough considering all the paths were flooded and and roads with a verge were gathering water fast.

I understand some of the roads became impassible (sp) last night after that.
Hope it lightens off for Sat morning as with 3000 people on those roads some accidents are bound to happen.

Ran the course yesterday evening after work and can concur it wasnt pretty out there - alot of water on the course, alot of areas on path along the avenue were flooded. With the high winds Im sure it'll clear up a little but theres more rain forecast, including quite a bit saturday afternoon (hopefully after noon)

If the weather continues is the race in danger of being cancelled?

Normally I'd say no way but given the deluges we've had since Saturday it is a possibility.

I find that route tough especially as I usually run it in the opposite direction and I've gotten used to the hills the other way. I've run it a few times over the last couple of weeks to get used to it but the second lap will be tough even in good weather. :(

I will be running the 10 miler for the first time. I have booked into the Travelodge in Castleknock (travelling up fom Cork). Is the start line far from the hotel and if I have to drive does anybody know if there will be sufficient parking.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 299 ✭✭ZiggyStardust

Hi Neelix. Travel Lodge is perfect for the race. It would be about 1 mile from the start if you go up Auburn avenue and take a left and the Park is right ahead of you. A nice warmup jog.
This is providing you have picked up your number before hand. I think you can pick them up from Lifestyle sports in Blanch the day before.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 Neelix

Thanks a million for that :). I have a friend collecting my number so I am not to bad. Warm up jog. Have not run in 3 weeks due to knee problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 Neelix

Don't forget the snorkels. Got this form the AA website:(

    * In the Phoenix Park, the road is closed from the Castleknock Gate to Mountjoy Cross due to serious flooding at the gate. Traffic is diverted via Blackhorse Avenue and the Castleknock Gate is closed so avoid coming up Auburn Avenue. It looks unlikely to reopen this morning and traffic in the park is very heavy.

Sounds boring. Just get yourself some decent raingear for running in. I see many people running in cotton t-shirts and these will quickly soak up water and become very uncomfortable. And make sure there's hot water for a shower when you get back :)

Is there a bag drop-off in the park for those not going to the college beforehand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,717 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

stmochtas, there is a small black adidas tent near the start where you can drop off your stuff.
Safe enough as hundread leave stuff there.

Just got an email regarding my registration for Saturday with them appologising for not having sent out the details of the number if you entered all races at the same time.
Apologies for any incontinence caused by this, I will see if we can get acceptance slips out to you but if not just used the number details you had for the 5 mile event.
    :D

not a fan of the old treadmill, but 5k on it, at 14/15kms an hour say, works up a good (vicious) sweat - it's good for ticking over, esp during injury recovery time I find!

I seem to be very fussy when I run re conditions - went to the gym last night because of the rain - and then felt like a complete weiner when driving home, I saw two hot girls running along the N11 in the pooring rain - with a great 'not a bother' attitude. Went for a run in the lashing rain over the wkd though, 5 miles, by the end of it, shorts, t-shirt - they were all rubbing in all the wrong places!

there is nothing worse, you convince yourself that its too wet or that you are too injured to run, you then go out for a drive and see others out running without a bother. You don't half feel like a wimp.

Very unsettled weather with further periods of heavy rain expected. Rain will become widespread and heavy Friday night. Very wet and humid on Saturday with rain in all areas, heavy and thundery at times and possible totals of 20 to 30mm overnight Friday and during Saturday with flooding likely in places. The rain will turn more showery later in the day with some brighter weather developing in western and southern areas during the evening.

    Hope we have the wellies!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,598 ✭✭✭shels4ever

Once the floods are small i don't mind... I don't care how much it rains during the race, as long is there isnt too much wind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I'd be worried about parking cars in the fields by Castleknock college if it's going to be raining heavily.
