    It depends where you apply.
There are the modern buildings, and then there is Cunningham House.

The latter is old, and has shared bathroom facilities, and communal areas shared by 12+ people.
The modern buildings are quite nice. You have a bedroom with study desk and ensuite, and a communal/kitchen area shared by your 5 or so roommates.

So, where are you applying to?

(BTW, I'm not a great reference, I've never lived in halls, just been out there a number of times)

I thought you couldn't apply till you got your offer?

I'm applying for Modern building. Do you think I will get roommates from the same course as me?

Might as well hijack this thread...

Is it possible to get accom in trinity hall if you don't receive an offer in the CAO's first round?

Yes it is possible to get into Trinity Hall, on the second round of the CAO, a very small number of rooms are kept for these students. Though if you're in that boat you should have a good plan B as to be honest getting a room in halls will be quite slim by then.

As for halls, well if you're in a big course like science there is a good chance all your housemates will be in the same course. This is great if you're going up to the place knowing no one. For the smaller courses, there might be one other from your course in your apartment.

Living in halls is fine, a modern single room will have a bed, toilet, wardrobe, desk, lamp and chair. You also have the college network access points in the room. A shared modern room is similar, but obviously has two of everything! The living room has no TV so bring one [and an NTL cable]

Halls can be quite strict at times with regards partys and noise and this applies to all times of year, not just exam time. [According to the rule book "a gathering of six or more people where music may be played or beverages may be served constitutes a party" and requires a permit from the Warden. Its also quite far out, for a 9am lecture, realistically you'd have to be at the gate at 8:15 - 8:20. Its a 7min walk to the luas, about 20mins on the tram to the green and another 10mins to the hamilton (science end). The luases can be quite packed in the mornings, and its not unusual that a tram will be too full to get on. Room inspections are fairly frequent [three a year I think] and sometimes it seems housekeeping are out to get you with fines etc. When I was there you had to sign guests in at night (free to do so) and it was one guest per person per night max. However it was a rule never enforced and manys the guest I had never signed in.

Down the road there is a spar which has an ATM and another 15mins walk will get you to tesco in rathmines.

That said, I had a great time out there in first year, you meet loads of people and Dartry is a really nice part of Dublin, but one year there is enough.

Was there for two years and had a great time.

Rooms are good (if a bit sterile) and while strict, the staff aren't really out 'to get' students. There are quite a few social events organised by the JCR (student body in Trinity Halls) and they will also deal with any issues which you may need help with.

What kind of things I should watch out for to stay out of trouble in Trinity Hall?

Oh lordy loo! That sounds terrible. Are the cunningham rooms less strict? I really wouldn't like people searching my room. That sounds really reaaaally ridiculous... searching teh rooms?!!!?!!

They don't search the rooms, they check the condition in which they are being maintained. Halls is actually very lax in some respects, once everyone is fairly quiet you are basically able to party away. Obviously during exam time this behaviour is strongly discouraged which is fair enough.

Most of the security are spot on aswell which means that even if your party is stopped it'll usually be along the lines of 'Lads are ye heading out, can you keep it down please.'

The easiest and stupidest way to get in trouble is to smoke in the rooms, go outside and you'll meet loads of people anyway. One of my non-smoking friends used to head out constantly for the banter of the so called 'waster circle'.

Living with a thousand other students mean you will find a clique(for want of a better word) with which you gel, and also offers the opportunity to meet people outside your course, doing things completely disparate to your own degree.

Competition for places is intense, especially as there is (I think) more second years coming back then ever before(Including myself around 260).

If you want to find out more call up to halls at some stage, I'm working here for the summer and you'll have no problem finding someone to let you have a quick look around.

    Hope this helps.

Hi, I was wondering how do you apply for halls? I have been on the website and spent ages looking for a link to an application form, but it doesnt seem to exist! Does it appear as soon as offers are out, or am I meant to just send an email expressing interest?? ahhhh so stressful!

Hi guys. This is a quick update.
I've been to the Trinity Hall on Monday and on Thursday _ _-08-2008. Seems like a good modern place with Modern buildings. You could see the shared kitchen outside which is nice. And nice new chairs and things with Large window blinds covering the whole window wall. The whole wall of the kitchen is made of glass - i like that.
I've also been to the Cunningham house. It is quite small in comparison to the Modern buildings.
I haven't seen any Trinity students in the Halls, although there were loads of international student's for summer English school. I spoke to a few of them and it turned out that they were staying in the Halls for the summer. Spanish and two French told me a fair bit about their experience in the Halls. They said that the apartment is excellent in the modern buildings they stayed in. They weren't sure about the food in the restaurant though. They preferred to buy their own food. It took me 20 minutes on my bicycle from the main Trinity College entrance to the Trinity Hall. Also I took a Luas on the other day from St Stephens Green to Milltown which cost me €1.80 one way. It took about 15 minutes on the Luas plus 10 minutes walking time along the Grafton Street and 10 minutes waiting for the Luas.
As I understood the Halls is a great place to make friends, especially on the Freshers week as nobody knows anyone. You also get to live with 4-6 other students in the same apartment. There are also interesting things organised in the Halls during Freshers week by the JCR - student's union for the Halls.

The restaurant doesn't operate when trinity students are there (well it didn't when I was there) that area is used as a communal study space during the run up to exams, as well as for the odd function/event.

BTW an international students experience of halls will be a good bit different than a trinity students, afaik the warden system isn't in place during the summer, and they get most of the cooking utensils provided for them. I'm open to correction tho.

Jimdw you must have been flying it down the temple road to get from the college to halls in 15mins via luas!! :);) 25mins was my record time.

A useful tip for when you arrive is to note every tiny defect in your room and kitchen, such as chips to paint on walls or white stains on your bathroom floor even a tea ring on your desk! be very meticulous because if you don't report everything you will get fined (and quite a bit as well) I lost over 100eur after first year in paying for damage I didn't cause, because I wasn't exact enough in reporting it when I moved in. Oh and you have to pay the fine or you won't be allowed to graduate when your time comes.

They want you to write about yourself so that they can pair you with roommates that suit your interests. So describe yourself as good as possible. I don't know when they send out replies but I'm guessing earlier than Trinity registration week.

There is a small computer room there, however its not the best and when I was there (2 years ago) it didn't work very well.

It got the cast off from IS Services that wasn't needed in trinity anymore

They pair by interests, course of study, etc. Some roommates are mixed gender.

I would advise buying a laptop and you can use internet and do your computer work in your room. :)
There is a small computer room in the Halls which is not very good.

lol troll. But seriously get a laptop unless your super poor. The comp room gets really crowded and the pc's are all ****. I was in halls last year, if you have any other q's just ask.

    When?
I filled out the form yesterday, and the only choice I was given was:
    Standard Single
    Modern Single
    Modern Shared

Modern refers to accommodation in the New buildings. Shared refers to rooms in the Modern building with two beds, where you share one room with a roommate. Standard refers to accommodation in the old building. Hope that helps.

No first years are in mixed gender apartments. Halls residents who are in second year or higher are given the option. The standard rooms (ie Cunningham House) are in three separate houses, all of which are single-gender.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 605 ✭✭✭Crania

I've heard some pretty bad reports about that Cunningham House from practically everyone I know who is in Trinity. Initially I had intended on applying to Cunningham due to having the single room(and being cheaper than the Modern Singles) but due to the bad reports, I've decided to apply to share with a friend in the Modern Twin Rooms instead.

What do others think about Cunningham?

Also, does anyone know if most people who apply for Halls get accomodation in Halls?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,629 ✭✭✭raah!

On the site it said "usually more people apply than get rooms".

I think I might have applied for Cunningham rather than Modern Single by accident...

Any way I can get this changed at this stage??

Just applied. Wonder if it'll hurt my chances that I applied for a modern twin but didn't specify a partner...

Probably shouldn't get your hopes up, they were pretty clear about you not being able to edit it, but I guess the best thing to do would be to ring them up asap and see what they can do.

Then again, maybe it was fate! You could buy something nice with the €1000 you'll save.

That won't hurt your chances anyway.

I'd say they love getting anyone who'll take a double as they can cram them in. I know a good few people who got a double room with a randomer. Worked out well for them as well, except for the one guy who hasn't been seen since.. :p

I'm going for a double as well, although, I know the guy who I'll be staying with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

If I applied for a Single, does that mean I definitely won't get put in a double? 'cause I wouldn't really mind sharing with someone, single is my preference, but getting Halls of any kind is the main priority..

Alright i am fairly confused now. the TCD website doesnt really specify what happens if you are accepted. i applied for a modern single. i am unsure whether this means i have my own room shared in an apartment with other people or whether i am in a one bedroom apartment. sorry i have just heard so many contradicting post's.

ok so what you have applied for, modern single room, consists of your own private bedroom with ensuite within an apartment. these apartments usually consist of 6 people, so you can have 6 single bedrooms or perhaps 2 single bedrooms and 2 double rooms. you have a common kitchen/living room that has all kithcen facilities, table, chairs aswel as a living room area consisting of couch and 2 chairs.

altho you have applied for a single room, there is a small chance you may indeed get a double room where you wil be sharing a room and ensuite but will still have the kicthen/living room area for 6 students.

so you make it clear you will not end up in a 1 bedroom apartment. when you get your offer, as far as im aware the website and accomodation office have both stated that offers will come out on thursday you will know on your offer form that you will get in the post whether you have successfully got a room in Halls and also whether or not it is a single modern or shared modern room.

hope this has clarified it for everyone!

That is for 2nd year and onwards, and it was posted in June. So you're number wouldn't be on it. Infact if you looked at it there are no 08 numbers on the list. (Apologies if you're a 2nd year or older)

The deadline for accepting your first round CAO offer is tomorrow at 5.15pm. You only got your offer a week ago, there is no way Trinity has allocated the rooms yet, let alone recieved all the applications from incoming first years.
