Lads, just today I realised something, it's August 2008, which means it's been two years since August 2006, for those of you who haven't been around long enough, this probably doesn't mean much.
1st August 2006 was the day that the Criminal Justice Act 2006 was signed into law by Minister McDowell and contained that all important change regarding the 1 Joule law.

So in honour of two years and the phenomenal growth which airsoft has experienced in that time, I'm proposing a small celebration, namely organising a night out with a few drinks.

Vote in the poll above for dates and feel free to suggest a location.

I reckon somewhere in Dublin is probably the handiest for most people to get to, but open to suggestions.

    What date for a piss-up? 16 votes

    you forgot Salute!
The live military vehicle & multi-period re-enactment show returns to the National Show Centre, Swords, August 30th & 31st and every club, or we could make a real party of it at the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

Forgot about salute alright, but the idea was to just have a normal night out for a few drinks or whatever rather than a skirmish or an event like salute.

Suggestions for a few venues in Dublin:

    The Mercantile
    Messrs. Maguire
The Porterhouse (Nassau Street or Temple Bar)
    Dakota

May I suggest regional nights out, as not everyone can get to Dublin.

    Midlands,
    North East,
    North West

    etc...

I have to say, if you'd have told me two years ago airsoft would be where it is today in Ireland I would have laughed.

It has been a fast two years, but it's also hard to believe so much has been accomplished in such a short period of time.

To everyone who has worked their arses off, thanks! :)

    Happy Birthday airsoft!

Oh and yes, +1 to drinks. Any excuse for a beer...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

    Two words.

    Beer me.

Can't believe it's been two years since. It's mad how time can fly by. Here's to another two great years, and beyond.

The mercantile is a nice spot. Convieniently located next to my second home, Starbucks. Eamon Dorans is a decent place too.

Although you may have been joking fayer; Just to make it absolutely clear:

Dress code is normal civilian clothing. We dont need a bunch of people turning up in ACU/Marpat etc...

Eamon Dorans is barely above coppers in terms of dodgy diveness. Barely.

My personal vote is for Porterhouse central or the long stone.

Yeah? I usually only go there during the day but it seems an alright place. Clearly wrong though. Personally, my first choices would be Lillies or the Ice bar. Not everyone likes those places though. Or Reynards.

doesnt really matter if we just stood in O Connel street, we'd still end up having a great laugh.,:D

Spent the last two nights in there, the bar in the left is less extreme than the heavy metal area, I think its an alright size too for an airsoft gathering.

Saying that I'm no dub and can't say Ive been to that many places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

Bruxxels can fill up like you wouldn't believe, leaving you waiting up to half an hour at the bar.

Incase we are still stuck for suggestions I put forward O Neills on Suffolk St.
It's a pub. That's all it is. No themes, no specific music and no snotty bouncers.

I'm good for whatever date is decided.

Ah here. We don't all go out wearing rugby jerseys and dubes, and drinking pints of probs and getting LAWKED.

First off, it's "scoops" or "pintage" not pints. Second, it's "horrendufied" not lawked. Lastly, you can try to copy my style if you want, but you're either born with or not. And clearly I was born with style.

    You stay classy, airsoft-iego.

Yekno, you could be construed as a scobe by comparison to my new lifestyle.
I live with a goiy from the states don't you know, we have three hd tv's.
Now if you dont mind I'm off to *reads dexs note* starbucks to have a mocha choca crocka latte.

Eh, me? Scobe? That's gonna cost you. The dark mocha fraps are good if you're in starbucks had one the other day. Quite nice. Though if you're not in the mood for a frap try a double shot macchiato, extra caramel with cream. Best served as a tall so you're not diluting the espresso too much. It's currently my evening tipple.

Lads, it's been suggested to me (he knows who he is and he's rarely wrong, damn him) that maybe going drinking and clubbing might be excluding more than a few of our community, and I have to admit, it's a good point. We have a lot of young players (I'm embarrassed to say, some almost a third of my age) and this evening/night should include them, for a bit at least, I'm not trying to be too PC about it. I'm also not into the idea of going somewhere loud and clubby in any case, is there some sort of middle ground about it? It's a celebratory social after all, not a 'get hammered and pull' night, right?

El "Scary guy who doesnt think he's scary" has suggested this alright, and is looking into getting a room so we(the youngies, NOT "CHILDREN") can come along too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,758 ✭✭✭Stercus Accidit

Uh, don't we socialise at scirmishes anyway?
This is being done as a beers thing, its different tbh.

Like, the gathering etc. have barbeques and camping, regular scirmishes often involve half your time talking, is there a need to change the plan from beers at all? What is the alternative?

It's not? Ah ffs, you mean I have to actually spend the whole night with you reprobates?
    the youngies, NOT "CHILDREN"

You're children until you're 18 and can legally enter Gladiators.

Pimp it all you want but the party won't take place in Starbucks.
    You corporate whore!

I agree with Kev that avoiding the clubs would be for the best but a pub really is the only other common ground that we all share.
As for the under age thing, all I could suggest is renting a function room, therefore making it a private party, and no refusal...but then things start to get complicated.

Likewise....what's the concession for the young players here, like, what's the cut off age? Even if we achieved something to accommodate the 15-16 year olds (which wouldn't be easy), we would then be snubbing the 13-14 year olds....
So bar a trip to Funderland or some knacker drinking, I have no idea how we could accommodate younger players and keep older players interested.

    Beers, ffs.

This is a community that sees each other at games, the safe zone, camping round the fire, all the time, this is a social sport where we see each other ALL the time.

This time round however, KD suggested, to GREAT enthusiasm a night out in a pub, I still want that.
Yes some players aren't old enough to drink, but would they want to prevent everyone else going out due to that? Because so far, this sounds like its going the way of many boards suggestions, to many chefs critics etc. taking away from the idea.

Some players wont be able to go, and thats sad, but this is one thing that over 18's do, that has been suggested that the over 18's among us do as a group.

Young players joined us at the gathering campfire, and at the hrta birthday game, countless scirmishes, on the forum, the irc and WILL be at the barbeque birthday games for Eirsoft soon.

Can we just go ahead and have one night of beers and not debate it to death?
