Sky1 secures exclusive UK rights to Battlestar Galactica prequel CAPRICA
Sky1 has secured the exclusive linear TV rights in the UK to CAPRICA, the much-anticipated prequel to Battlestar Galactica, from NBC Universal International Television Distribution, it was announced today.

As Sky1's Peabody and Emmy-winning original series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA heads into its fourth and final season, CAPRICA - a two hour prequel from executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick - will expand on the Galactica world and get deeper into the origins of the story whilst promising to deliver more of the passion, intrigue, political backbiting, family conflict and hardcore action that fans have come to love.

David Smyth, Head of Acquisitions, Sky1, Sky2, Sky3 commented: "Battlestar Galactica has surprised and awed audiences with its distinctive style and gripping story-telling. We're thrilled to have secured exclusive rights to the next chapter of this award-winning franchise."

Set 50 years before BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, CAPRICA follows two rival families – the Graystones and the Adamas. Bound together by tragedy, their ensuing struggle will determine the fate of the 12 Colonies.

CAPRICA is a society rife with advanced technology. Little do they know they are trembling on the brink of the creation of the first CYLON (cybernetic life-form node).

The Graystones and Adamas come from different cultures and wildly different socio-economic backgrounds. Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz, The Mask, Pulp Fiction) is a computer genius and the leading businessman of the 12 Colonies. His wife, Amanda Graystone (Paula Malcolmson, Deadwood, ER) is an elite neurosurgeon. Joseph Adama (Esai Morales, NYPD Blue) is an immigrant, a lawyer with ties to the mob, and a father who is desperate to reconnect with his estranged son, William (Sina Najafi).

Their bitter rivalry will bring the end of life as they know it. Their children are the future.

CAPRICA is produced by NBC Universal Cable Studio and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) and Remi Aubuchon (24). It is co-written by Aubuchon and Moore and directed by Jeffrey Reiner (“Friday Night Lights”). The two-hour prequel will air on Sky1 and Sky1 HD in November 2008.

fantastic news but i am scared, i dont watch mutch tv but what to do about spoilers? surley there will be a hint at the final cylon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,734 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I don't see how. The Cylons they will be dealing with will be from the first Cylon war and won't look human at all.

Im sure they (Moore and Co) wouldn't have let it air if its going to give away the end of the 4th series. Plus i dont see how the story could give the last Cylon away unless some sort of soothsayer foresees it.

I also love the way Sky say "Sky1's Peabody and Emmy-winning original series" come on who are they fooling

In fairness, BSG wouldn't have got aired if it weren't for Sky's intervention?

Well its going to involve the early cylon humans aat some point

Daniel Graystone is a computer genius and the leading businessman of the 12 Colonies. His wife, Amanda Graystone is an elite neurosurgeon.

im guessing there two professions will mix? to create the human models, this is where i assume the final five came from, although i dont think we will see them till the end of caprica i would be worried about it even dropping hints

I don't see how to be honest. It can't be the same ones surely.

We should get it the same time as the Yanks.

Hard to know really how the final 5 cylons fit into Caprica if they do at all.

All we know up to now from Razor is that from the cylon/human war 40 years ago the cylons were experimenting with humans resulting in the hybrids and didn't really perfect skinjobs until the 8 models were introduced in the current war. The final five seem to pre date all of them and apparently have already been to or from 13th colony (Earth).

I suppose it is plausable that the five or the fifth cylon that we don't know yet could have initially influenced how A.I. was conceived and developed on Caprica into the cylons we know today. It would kind of fit with the "all of this has happened before and will happen again" theme

But anyone's guess is as good as mine, I'm sure Caprica will be a slow building story and any spoilers will not be revealed until BSG ends.

Surely you mean 09. And yes, it does seem rather stupid, since any time an epic has aired in uk before us, us viewing numbers went down significent bit.
I doubt it will start in us in jan though, since the rest of bsg is due to start then. My moneys on them showing up sometime this winter to bridge the gap before the end of BSG.

Actually the original mini-series from 2003 was a joint production between the Sci-Fi Channel and Sky. I believe at least the first and second seasons were too, but I'm not sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

was caprica not meant to be a series?

oh well. better this way imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

I think the mini series and season 1 were part funded by Sky 1, but after that It was all sci-fi.

I think word on the gravepipe is that its a backdoor pilot to a potential series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

Caprica is an upcoming television series set in the fictional Battlestar Galactica universe. It is expected to get its worldwide premiere on Sky1 in the UK and Ireland in Spring 2009.[1] In the United States the backdoor-pilot is currently scheduled to air in December 2008 on SCI FI, although this may well be pushed back to early 2009.[2]

I searched wikipedia and found that statement about Spring 2009 but it says "SERIES" not pilot. So I think its been picked up as a series so thats good news.

Indeed. In the meantime there is plenty of other new stuff being made. Although instead I'm working my way through 7 seasons of The West Wing :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,734 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I am sure it will be released as a 4.5 I am afraid. Suits me okay cos I bought 4.0 though.

jcdf, do not ask where to download BSG.

Apparently Caprica's not due to air until early 2010 now...

I think its pretty obvious by now that if its created by Ronald D Moore then you are going to be made wait for it. Nothing is done in a quick space of time. First episode 2010...... Second episode 2011.

To be fair, the Sci-fi channel are the ones who call the shots when it comes to mid-season breaks. Mid-season breaks seem to be the norm for most US shows. We also had the writer's strike this time round to add to the delays.

Ok - we have a date.. well sort of.
We have a month. The pilot will be released on a direct to DVD release in april with the series being confirmed as 2110.

With BSG to finish up on the 21st of march im going to take a wild guess at April 4th as the release date for the DVD

The 'cover art' is possibly the most amtuerish mock-up ever put to jpeg. One of the parts is just a low res version of the BSG intro flash of the Caprica skyscape and another is just a picture with a white line through the bottom.

It's obviously not going to be the finalised cover art, but it couuld well be some third part trying to be smart and mocking up their own cover art.

Either way, I'm happy Caprica's getting an earlier than expected release. I'd rather have it now than have to wait another ten months to see what Caprica is like.

I did not see all of the last episode but what I saw was impressive. When I started watching the series I had a number preconceptions.
Battlestar Galatica has spaceships and is therefore set in the future.
The crowd of humans involved call themselves the twelve colonies and their constitution the articles of colonisation; this gives the impression that they are colonists from Earth or from some group who originated from earth.
After the destruction of the twelve colonies the humans set out to find a planet called earth, presumably 'our earth'.
The writers did something very clever and turned the whole thing on its head.
There were a number of things early on that did not make much sense, why would people of the future who had no collective knowledge of earth choose to resurrect a bunch of dead gods that no one has worshipped for thousands of years. They also kept mentioning a thirteen tribe who travelled to and colonised a planet called Earth, which made no sense until I realised that 'their Earth' was not 'our Earth'.

I did not see the last half hour of the final series. What happened after the Battlestar crowd arrived at 'our Earth'?
