Fisher Price: My First Blackout

Soooooo. I've been following a WSB training program for the last number of weeks. Really loving it and have added 10 -15kg to all of my lifts. I was on Max effort bench day yesterday and was doing inclines working up to my 1RM of 117.5kg ( and trying to go for the magical 120 in the incline which I freakin hate!).

I got to 115kg for 1 rep and was just gonna get under it and push it, didn't think I needed a spotter because a. it flew up last week and b. there were none of the usual people around who I know have an idea how to spot. So I went for it and would then go find a spotter for my 120 attempt.

I unracked, lowered to my chest, drove up, through my usual sticking point which I was chuffed with before everything went white, a fizzing sensation went through me and the music in the gym slowed down "Froooooommmm Paaaarriiiissss tooooo Beeeerrrllliiiinnnn......" (fukcin Total Fitness playlist!!!). The bar then felt completely weightless, I was still conscious so I said I could just shove it up. No.

It came down to my chest in what seemed like the action of a feather floating to earth but which I'm sure was a sickening thump. I then took a breath (I hold my breath during the bench to ensure I keep a tight upper back/trunk, they said this was a possible side effect, ha!) and my brain decided to rouse itself a little, my vision cleared up, the bar felt (very) heavy. I managed to politely ask the guy standing next to my bench "Sorry old boy would you mind helping me re-rack this bar?" Only thing is my voice sounded really weird and echoed in my head.....and the guy turned around and it was Bootsy Collins!!! Ok no that didn't happen but the rest of the story is true.

I was pretty flustered after it but am proud to say I got back under the bar after 5 mins rest and (with a spotter) pressed it no problem. I also tried the 120 but was way too shattered and it was a miss. Really pissed me off actually because up until I had my out of body experience I felt strong and thought I was going to get the 120. I took it out on my upper back for the rest of the session, It's my weak point so I blame it! Die Lats!

So anyone else ever have any experiences along these lines? I know I'm going to be told how irresponsible I am and how dangerous that was so save those comments, I don't care. I fukcin passed out under the bar, I'm hardcore!!! (ish):o

Exactly how common is passing out when weight-lifting?

I've blacked out once or twice in my life, doctor said it was due to low blood pressure. I get the 'shiny little stars' when I blow my nose too hard, or sometimes standing up too quickly after being sitting down for a long time.

Anyway, back to the point. I was doing Deadlifts yesterday. First time trying reps of 125Kgs. On my 3rd set, going for 4 each time, on the 2nd one I got the stars, only slightly but said I'd leave it at that. Didn't fancy blacking out on the 3rd rep! :o

Happened to me about 6 months ago too...

It was like the second last workout before the national champs. I hadn't got my bench shirt to work properly and was having serious problems with touching weights. There was 170 or 175kg on the bar I think. I just stuck with it and kept trying to find the right groove to get it down, fought it for a LONG time.

Then the room started to go black and my vision became blurred, sound faded out. Next thing I knew the bar was half was back to the racks and it felt weightless. It only registered what happened after I got up. I was seeing starts, real dizzy and had a horrible ringing in my ears.

    Thank god for good spotters!
