Weight belt with SS?

    Hi all,

this is my first post here. been reading for a while and got some great tips from you guys/gals. so thanks for that.

I have been doing SS for just over a month now and its going great. am up to 100kg on the squat. with the deadlift at 90 kg my lower back is getting a good workout.

I was doing my squats last night after my first work set and this older guy (he's usually got good advice) told me that I should be using a belt with the squat. anyways he really put me off my rythm for the last 2 sets when the 1st felt so good. from what I remember reading is SS having good form and a strong , tight core will prevent injuries of the lower back. my question is, will it come to point where I know to use a belt or should I just use one all the time. any advice appreciated. thanks in advance.

p.s. I will post a vid of my squat & deadlift on the SS forum when I get a chance.

Hi, I really don't know when you need to wear a belt, but if you are squating 100kg and feel grand, then i doubt you need one yet.

It might be worth looking to why your squats are higher than your deadlifts, it is more usual to be the other way round.
I'm doing SS myself, and my squats were too close to my deadlift weight, and video showed that i was doing a few things on the squats that i was pretty sure i wasn't doing, e.g. some were only parallel, not below, some times hip drive stalled half way up and then i would lead with the chest, some times its hard to see this as the bar doesn't have to stop moving for this to happen.

But it's much better to catch this stuff early, than to fool yourself into thinking your getting stronger, just because weight is going on he bar.

good point. I'll try and get a vid of my form tomorrow morning.

actually the deadlift is catching up and will overtake pretty soon I reckon.

That, my friend, is absolute BS! 100kg isnt a very heavy squat unless you weigh less than 70 or 60kg yourself. A belt is just used as cheat really and shouldnt be used unless you are pushing serious weight like over twice your body weight for your avg joe. But assuming you weight over 70kg you dont need a belt. thats my opinion anyways!
