Just starting out in fitness - any good books/advice?

So I've just started in a gym for the first time and intend to go 3-4 times a week. A fitness instructor made out a simple plan for me, cardio, weights, but at the moment I am so unfit I am struggling with even the basic 10 minute intervals or 15x3 weight lifting.

I would like to read up on diet and fitness regimes and was wondering if there are any good books for beginners people would recommend. My main goal is the increase upper body strength and definition, along with regular cardio. I don't know how long it's going to take but without planning I feel I'm just going to get lost.

Any tips here are appreciated aswell. How long do people stay in the gym for generally? At the moment I will do some cardio until I get tired, take a quick break, then head for the weights until I get tires, take a break, repeat (for about 1-2 hours). Is that ok?

There's a wealth of information contained in this boards stickies. I recommend you check them out. Also using the search function is quite useful for common queries.

Stay commited. You are exercising until you get tired ATM. This is always a good start. Keep reading and researching. You will learn as you go on.

Its often recommended to do weights before cardio.

Do a little warm up, then hit the weights hard. You'll be attacking them when you're fresh and energetic and thus can move(lift) more. Afterwards hit the cardio for about 30 mins.

You were probably given the generic Fitness instructor plan, the one thats "tailored for you", usually x mins on bike/threadmill/X-Trainer and then chest press, shoulder press and the like.

Check out Starting Strength. Excellent for the building blocks of weight training. There is also a book which is highly recommended by the members here. I'm currently doing this training programme myself.

Post up some stats about yourself, height/weight/sex and your current diet and training programme - makes it easier for the folk here to create a picture thus able to help you out better.

Also it may be worth creating a Fitness Log in the subforum here. It's a good motivator and helps you keep track of your progress.
