Do explain this remapping process! How much and where!

Do explain this remapping process! How much and where!

First off, remapping makes a HUGE difference to Diesels and a small difference to petrol cars.

When "chip-tuning" you have basically 2 options. A Control box that plugs into your car or a remap. A control box chip, in a way, sits on top of the car computer. A remap is where the engine software itself is actually changed. I hope this makes sense. There are no extra parts involved in a remap.

So what happens? Well I guy turns up with a laptop and plugs it into your car. He then reads all of your cars data and settings. These are then optimised and a new "map" is uploaded to your car. Settings that are changed include, turbo kick in and pressures, timings and many other bits. Look at http://www.angeltuning.co.uk They remapped mine.

One word of warning though. Cars are tuning very soft by the manufactures to get low emmisions and to take into account that the cars will be a long time between services in many cases. If you do remap, you should oil and filter change each 6000 and make sure to service your car every time its due and on time!!! Thats my own 2pence worth anyway!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭flamegrill

04 Passat TDI myself aswell. Considering the remapping process, 350 bones is a bit expensive. Guy in Limerick will do it for 250, but who wants to go there??? !!

Other problem is with approx 45% more torque, my already balding tyres will be completely feiced in no time.

Mrs Whosbetter?'s conveyance is an ageing Ford Scorpio.
The look of this car would frighten anybody's horses.
Nonetheless, it's roomy & surprisingly good to drive.

My own Steed is a 15 year old Mazda 626.
    It has; Intergalactic mileage.
It doesn't have ; Any straight panels left.
OH refuses to be seen in it. Says it lowers the tone of the entire area & calls it the 'mobile ashtray'
I call it the Millennium Falcon.

    Exhibit 3, is a '74 Rover V8.
This is used as a backup car when one of the above ones is in 'dry dock'
Crank the engine on this, & it makes a sound like it's creating it's own weather!
Fuel bills make me want to cry though.

Also, we have an '82 Ford Capri GT4.
This is in bits & pieces in various sheds in 2 diff counties.
Will be a bitchin' car when I eventually get round to finishing it.

To run a fleet like this you need to have a few things.
    1 Ingenuity
2 A decent range of tools
    3 AA membership
    4 A good towrope!

On the upside, we've never had any carloans.

Guess this is what you would call 'Bangernomics':D

nice collection there... would love to see the capri when done, the v8 sounds cool, and always had a fondness for the scorpio

Been a Capri fan for years.
The GT4 is a rare model & it's on Irish plates too.
It's a car well worth doing up.
All I need to do now is win the Lotto.:D:D

See you have a nice Saab there.
The 900 is Mrs Whosbetter?'s fave car.

    Would love to!
Unfortunately, I've been put on a 3 day week recently.
That's great for time, but not great for funds, so that project goes on the long finger....yet again.
