Getting to a stage in my poker life...

Anyone here getting to the stage of their poker life. Where they're beginning to hate giving advice?

As a young poker player, I used to love sharing all my advice with people, teaching was the best way of learning etc. But now as a 'winning player', I'm beginning to get into the mind-set that any advice I give is improving my opposition? Even giving advice like 'Don't play 72o' hurts me to say, because the more people playing 72o against me, the better.

Anyone else an old cynic like me?

It depends what setting it is in. If it's a friend of your by all means share information and perhaps each can learn from each other, but a randomer at the table, I definitely wouldn't, and no-one should. Why would you want people you are playing for money to be better?

It never ceases to amaze when some fish badly misplays a hand, stacks off and some idiot at the table who thinks they're a great player starts telling the fish what they did wrong and how they should've played the hand

and here was me thinking it is nice to be nice. and i'd be surprised if the advice given out by the majority of boards posters/pub regs/casino regs isnt readily available in 1000+ poker books or from websites. how did you learn? reading and talking to people? share the love. if the standard of the game you're in gets better, then YOU have to improve or find a different game? for example, it always baffles me when lloyd insists on going to play the 100 SE game against people he knows are good and who know him, rather than playing a JP Pub game 5 mins from his door for the same amount of money and probably more runners for the sake of 5mins per level on the clock, surely he's more +EV against the pub players? if he wants to beat the games he plays, he had to (and has) improved beyond his regular opponents, or he could choose to stay at same level and beat weaker opponents in a different game. there's maybe a handful of posters on boards who are that much better that their advice would have a negative affect on their game in terms of EV (HJ, valor, ian, cardshark etc) but these guys still give advice cos it is nice to be nice. what advice could 95% of people on here give at a 50 euro freezeout in dublin that would seriously hamper their earning expectation?? /rant

Ill agree with you on the Lloyd point but hes obviously not in it for the money.

As for giving advice, theres a difference between throwing advice at people that dont want it and posting it online where people are debating it.

I think there was an article in Bluff which ended in a classic quote from the author "Please do not feed the fish"

So your not the only one, but giving advice when you weren't asked is the height of ignorance at the table.

Agreed, IMO there is a MASSIVE difference, people debating things here and on similar forums will find the information anyway if they want it.

As for telling people you play with at the table where they made a mistake, well that's just retarded IMO, and something I'll never understand why people do it, although at least most of the time the advice being given in those settings is pretty bad from my experience.

I'm not talking about giving advice at the live table, I rarely play live but when I do, I always put on the pub idiot act.

I even hate posting replies to threads on twoplustwo. At the end of the day, I'm improving some guy with no real benefit to me. I'd much rather let some other guy reply to the thread, so at least I can read it and get someone elses point of view. You learn more by listening.

I completely disagree, you learn more by actually typing out your thought process and then for other people to say why they disagree. You then can take their opinions on board and refine your thought process by either reinforcing it because you think the other person is wrong, or changing it because you realise where you may have flaws. There should never come a point when you stop learning about Poker (and TBH about everything in life).

IMO listening or being told things is a very superficial form of learning.

Recently I feel like something has clicked in my NLH game and am beating it for a decent amount. Would I try to explain the development to a stranger, at the moment, no. I would to a friend. But now that cash games are my bread and butter I would be slow to teach what i believe to be the best way to play.

One man's advice is another man's eh, non-advice.

I do ok in Omaha, yet by the amount of criticism I incur on here from time to time you'd think I was a total donkey.

Just let em off and play away for yerself. The more they play badly against you the more likely you are to clean em out. Enjoy the monies.

Super system, Harrington and training sites have all improved the standard of the game greatly, esp the training sites. 2+2 has so many great plrs willing to teach, I learn every time I open the site. OP's point is a valid one, was it not for these teachers the game would be very different and I would be a looser. They say the games were better value yrs ago but was it the same % of winners v loosers

I agree 100% with this post. My experience is that the vast majority of the advice that players give out is laughably bad with the most common one being calling raises out of position for value with any two cards or the best I've heard is justifying flat calling bets for the implied odds of hitting a gutshot with 15BB stacks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭Macspower

giving advice improves your game as much as recieving it... particulary if there is discussion on it...
eg I give advice on how to play a hand... a better/more experienced player shows me where my advice is flawed/wrong and I see where my thinking could be improved = me a better player!

theres a big difference between a winner and a big winner.
if by winner you mean you beat 5c/10c for 4BB/100 fair play lol. Or do you beat the $10 sngs with a 1% roi. well done imo.

No, I go by the screen name 'Phil Ivey' on FTP, yeah I probably don't post on 2+2 quite enough.

I never claimed to be the greatest poker player of all time, or that I play high stakes online. I just hate giving advice, I worked hard to get my game to where it is, and I hate disposing of my hard earned insight cheaply.

I don't care - Poker is a situational game, and not all players can learn to see the overall picture when a hand/game is played. I win, I am making good money out of it, if it was so easy to teach/learn we would all be masters and nobody would make money out of poker due to the rakes.

It is starting to look a little trollish at this stage.

So basically Ted, apparently you worked hard at your game, (I assume from using forums like this one and 2+2) and now you feel you know everything there is to know and so decide start a thread here (where you don't even post your gems) saying you know enough and aren't going to post any more on 2+2??

Why didn't you just post this on 2+2, if that's where all your posting is, maybe the people that know you there and who look forward to your posts can try and talk you out of it? Or at least tell us who you are over there so we can know who we're talking to... or you are just trying to get a reaction (i.e. troll)??

May I ask how you got your game to the level it is? Whatever level that may be. Shall I hazard a guess and say it involved reading forums and asking questions? If that's the case, you have the most selfish attitude I've seen on here in a long time!

My game has come along in leaps and bounds thanks to Boards because I was willing to learn and people were willing to share advice. As I progress as I player, I'll happily pass on what I've learned to newer players who are also willing to learn and improve their game!

I guess people here really don't like the idea of keeping ideas to themselves! I won't lie, I'm very suprised that sharing constructive theories was so shined upon here, because I always got the impression (prehaps falsely) that there was a 'you suck, i rule, lol' attitude around here.

Looks like I've stumbled across a community of really open minded guys. With such an open minded community I'm sure our game can flourish together. WP guys. I'm genuinely very happy and proud with the response this thread has generated. No wonder Ireland is doing well per capita in poker.
