Are there too many boards, in boards?

Hi, I mainly use this site at work, as it is the only message boards that will work on our restricted system. However, I do find that boards.ie is like a ghost town at the best of times. I have subscribed to tonnes of threads and visit many different boards but there just seems to be very little going on. Do you think that there are too many forums and not enough posters? Maybe its time to trim it down a bit?

Suggest forums to delete and I bet you'll be shutting up shop on a forum someone uses.

    Nah tis all good chum.
I have email alerts set up.
Not a minute goes by without one email or other popping up for me to peruse.
I like that a lot of the fora have split off to smaller crews of like minded people.
And there is always AH for the mass appeal.

this is a serious issue , i think we need a new forum to discuss it fully...

Forums that I post on right now, Bargain Alerts has 72 (24 members & 48 guests), After Hours has 152 (79 members & 73 guests). Which forums do you think need to be cut? There is an inactive pile (not viewable by users or mods). The Comp/Tech are has seen a fairly big change over the past few months as it split in a few different forums.

Well a chunk of the ones under 'Rec' could be cut or merged, surely. Is there really a need for a mustard forum?

    Far too many, yes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,609 ✭✭✭Flamed Diving

Whats wrong with that? Why can't that be merged with Food & Drink?

Conversely, if we have a mustard forum, why not a mayonaisse, ketchup, Worchestershire Sauce forum? Its just overkill!

Not really too many, just don't use the ones not of interest.

    Suggestion number 2:

Most of the IT (Institute of Technology) forums are empty, why not merge them all into one IT forum. That way, people from different IT's would get to network and liven things up a bit.

    I can see your point.
The mustard forum is always the one mentioned as "This is the last straw" when it comes to forums.
Once things grow to a certain size they have to expand to cater to the larger user base.
I dont think that anyone has figured out a better way of catering to new users than to open enough forums to maintain their interest ,be it specific enough to cater to mustard or strange enough to allow like minded beer gutted individuals to join together in peace.
In fairness a lot of the private forums are dead and all, not a lot of posting going on.
But having said that, some of the best interactions I have had on boards have been in the context of the smaller fora, where you can see familiar faces and expect familiar opinions even if they are contrary to your own.

But I do think that this is being more closely watched.
For instance there is not as yet a classic rock forum.
    *cough*

Discuss? Are you a primary school teacher?

OP, no one is forcing you to frequent any particular forum.
Whilst there are plenty of fora on here that are of no interest to me
I can appreciate that different people have different tastes and interests.

When you visit a restaurant do you order everything on the menu or just
    what you like/want?

Actually the lack of people on this website is forcing me into every forum, in the pursuit of conversation. In fact, this thread is the most interaction I've had in ages!

    :pac:

I like the smorgasboard of different opinions on the boards.ie main page that are generally always from different fora.
I would actually like to see the list of most recent posts doubled or at least enlarged a little bit.
Particularly because those European Union guys keep on getting double posties on the main page for every one post someone makes.
I even told the help desk guys about it.
    Like a year ago.
    EU conspiracy.

The obvious solution is to simply cull all the fora your subbed to as there "is very little going on" within.

I dunno, I guess I just crave the community feel I get with other fora I frequent. I have been here over a year (different alias) and I barely recognise peoples names, bar the creationist thread.

    :)

Maybe have a look around more? There actually is a community feel about the place. And if you barely recognise peoples' names, that means there are lots of people, so your theory that there is no one here is kind of defunct!

AHHHHHH! What I'm saying is that there are too many boards, for too few people. Read what I said above! I'm talking a peeps-boards ratio!

but the more boards, the more people it will attract.
then they get stuck here and addicted

My last username made it a bit too obvious who my reali identity is, which is a shame cause I had a couple thousand posts. Anywho, I will sub to a few more forums and see what happens.

If you want an inactive forum, try Web hosting. The last post was 5 years ago when DeV got pissed off with a few users and locked it!
There are probably others, I found it recently when searching for something...

    Is it kitty time yet?

Actually it was almost exactly 4 years ago when Johnny Versace asked for advice.

I would endorse kittys at this point but it would be up to a mod/admin now wouldn't it?

Good riddance to the Web Hosting forum - one of the best moves we ever made.

I'm of the opinion that we don't have enough forums yet :-)

Having loads of forums is great as long as there isn't inverted commas seperating them.

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

Whats wrong with having some busy forums and some quiet forums? At almost any time of the day there are a good few on several of the bigger forums like AH, Soccer, Motors and Poker. During the busy times there are regularly over 100 on each of these forums. hardly quiet.

also, if you delete all the quiet forums, what about the poor mods? There will be too much coke and hookers left over for those that remain.......

There's a decent redundancy packet available for mods with over 50 bans/year.

Serious answer - nope. Some of the IT forums might look dead but who is to say they'll stay dead when college starts again? Or if not this year, perhaps next?
