Irish Women Who can't Win

Right, I'm starting a thread fuelled by a lot of what I've read on this forum and others here (and have heard discussed at length on radio programmes such as Ray D'Aarcy etc) about Irish women.

We all know we're getting a lot of rap at the moment due to the influx of foreign women (particularly Eastern Europeans) about how horrendous we are in terms of looks and "taking care of ourselves". [I'm not going to get into how I feel about it applying in lots of cases to Irish men as well, as I've already made my thoughts on the clear in the Fat Girls not being allowed into nightclubs thread].

Alongside the Irish-women-are-generally-gross-and-bring-on-the-foreigners threads, I've come across multiple threads about how guys also hate the way we use too much fake tan and make up and we should just go for the au naturale look that a lot of guys profess they prefer.

I, for one, feel like I can't win. [For the record I have a boyfriend so I'm not man hunting or in a situation where I'm looking for male acceptance in an "active" sense, it's just a general gripe of mine].

I go to the gym regularly. I'm a size 8-12 depending on dress sizes (not weight fluctuation) but that, again, is another thread!!! (See dress sizes thread in Fash and App.) I'm slim and happy with my figure. i apply fake tan every week and wear make up almost every day. i like to think that I do it tastefully and have been told by others that this is so (unless they're horrible liars:)). I've been using fake tan for years and am so used to applying it that I rarley, if ever, end up streaked and I'm definitely never orange.

The reason I put on fake tan is because in this country, as a permanent resident who doesn't get a holiday every year and can't afford (and don't agree with) sunbeds on a regular basis, it's the only way I can achieve a tanned look. The reason I like a tanned look is I'm naturally quite pale and I think a tan looks sexy and slimming and healthy if applied in the correct manner (not too liberally and without streaks). We all know that after a sun holiday the majority of us look very healthy and more attractive [although this may be subject to debate].

I use make-up almost all of the time as I like to look my best. It's not an insecurity thing at this stage, I just like that it gives me extra confidence and I look a hell of a lot better with it on.

I make an effort to get to the gym on a regular basis because although I have no issues with my weight, I like to think I'm being good to my body and as I get older my metabolism may not always be so good to me!!

It feels like women like myself can't win in the "Irish girls don't make an effort and aren't attractive" argument. On the flip side if we do tend to use tan and make up to improve our colour and complexions (something the foreigners get for free) we're lambasted by guys in equal measures who give out wildly about fake tan and make up and Irish women who look a state.

So what I want to ask is this: how does one win, being an Irish woman nowadays???? [Cue lots of just live with it love you're a minger and always will be!!! comments from the boys :)]

Well personally I'm not too bothered if a woman wears fake tan or not. It's not something I particularly like but y'know it doesn't really matter. As for the make up thing I think what people have a problem with is the overuse of it.

The problem to me is for a lot of them, taking care in their appearance means lots of shopping for clothes and make up rather than eating better and exercising (though of course there's nothing wrong with wanting to have nice fitting clothes and suitable make-up etc.)

I personally think Irish women look as good as other countries by and large but could definitely get more exercise (which also applies to the guys too).

Ah, nuts! 8-12, eh, and not your weight? Then it must be your size. Seriously!

Fake tan? Go out in the fresh air occasionally and you won't look like a ghost.

Make-up, not because of insecurity but for confidence. Surely you can see the dichotomy here.

I for one think Irish and foreign and whatever girls are beautiful, if you can see them. The current fascination with Polish ladies is a novelty thing. Really, when we're used to it we'll be sick of it!

+1 can we send a mass pm or something to all women on boards that are interested in having a better figure that exercise and lifting in particular makes you sexeh?

    Good post OP.

I always have to laugh when I hear comments like that though....I mean look at half of the male population, I don't see that many Brad Pitt lookalikes walking around! So when I hear these comments like "Forgein women are way better looking than Irish women" I usually look at the ugly bloke saying it and laugh.

But Clare, just 'cause I'm ugly don't mean I ain't got eyes!

Its just like when I go away foreign, I'm a hunk to all the ladies over there as I looks alien, as in I'm a stranger/foreigner and look different so they have interest in that.

But here, I'm probably seen as your typical old pale Irish guy.

    Overall, same for guys really.

The one thing we have in common with all these wonderful foreign women is....

we'd turn them down as well.

I find it difficult to put across what weight/size I am with dress sizes as they vary so much it's not a good indication of your actual size. That's all I was trying to say. Not sure why that annoyed you??

I spend a lot of time in the fresh air. Last time I checked though, the Irish "fresh air" doesn't tan many people

I wear make up as I think it makes me look good. That doesn't mean i lack confidence without. I wear skinny jeans cos i think they look nice on me. It doesn't mean that without them i think i'm hideous. it's a preference rather than a neccessity.

I said it on a similar thread and I reckon there's something in it:rolleyes::o:). Irish women are just as pretty as foreign women. Irish women are cool. Irish men seem pretty cool too. The problem comes when you put irish men and women together. we seem to grate up against each other more for some reason.:D Seriously though(ish) A lot of Irish guys like foreign women, a lot of Foreign men like Irish women. Problem solved. Good for the gene's too.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Yes, fellas here seem to be adverse to women here using fake tan, but yet that's one of the things they'll comment about on one of these foreign beautes. Whilst there's nothing worse than someone using fake tan and looking like a member of the orangutan family, clearly tan is attractive, so I don't see the problem.

Plus, as I saw in another thread, seeing as they live in a warmer country [some, not all] they're inclined to be in better shape as they have to strip off or wear skimpier clothes in the sun.

However, would do these Irish lads no harm to be boycotted & left in favour of some F I N E foreign, tanned, darkhaired, handsome brown eyed men............Pass the bucket please to collect my drool....

Ya, i see your point there. there's no use buying gorgeous clothes and slapping on the make up to look good on a Sat night if you don't take care otherwise.

I think this all of the time too. Ladies on here are reading my mind! When i was going on holidays and had to strip off to a bikini I made damn sure I was in good shape. If I had to dress like that all the time here too I know it'd be a huge influence on how I took care of myself. It's like when people go on summer diet and whatnot. If you're exposing a lot of your body to the world it's gonna need to be in better shape. Doing it on a regular basis is a huge motivation to keep fit, hence the foreign hotties.

To be fair, not all Polish wimmin I've seen are that hot. Not hot at all actually. Same goes for any nationality. I don't believe there can be one nationality better looking than another per sé. Good genes also have a lot to do with it. So all the good looking people out there, DO NOT sacrifice your future offsprings looks by marrying or sleeping with a minger! Only the best will do!

The thing is we are not a looks orientated nation. We have just out crawled out of the mudpit compared to our european neighbours.
And we had that whole catholic attitude to vanity.

We don't do kempt well. We don't know any better and I'd think any amount of sunny days would change that.

This I do agree with. Irish women have pretty faces, actually objectively better than most in Europe, but from the neck down the continentals, tend to have better more toned bodies and I do reckon it's down to that. More of them is exposed more often. I would say the foreign men the same tbh. Neither gender is as flabby in the 20's as people here. I think the eastern Europeans tend to have slimmer figures is down to the diet. I've seen polish and russian women put on weight here, so it's not just the sun.

You say it is what you have seen on boards and heard/read in the meedjia.

What you fail to mention is "Im sick of my Irish workmates and lads I know going on about foreign women".

Sunday Independant columnists and AH members with self hatred are not the entire male population of Ireland.

Some of us, like me, live in the real world. A world where Irish men often view foreign women as rude, dumpy, lacking in wildness.

I have NEVER in real lie heard an Irishman say East European women are vastly superiour to Irish women. I have only ever known one Irish man who went out with an East European. I havent a chance of dragging the lads to some of the decent dance nights in town because the majority of the women are foreign, and therefore there is far less chance of pulling them.

Most talk of EE women seems to revolve around complaints about rude girls serving in Dunnes.

    Again. Boards exclusive.

Having worked with more of them than most here I am better qualified to talk on the matter.

Foreign women generally have worse skin than the Irish (pimples, acne, smoke damage etc)
More likely to have unkempt or greasy hair

If you want to be nationality specific:
German women are amongst the most muscled or overweight munters Ive had the misfortune to come across. As a general rule there are only two types of German women: stunningly beautiful blondes or creatures of the black lagoon. The "hmm, not bad!" category barely exists.
Most West European women have a very conservative dress sense. Anything that Irish women wear that poses a remote risk of getting a tan is considered prostitute-style dress.
Alot of Spanish and Italian women insist on wearing red rimmed glasses, or thick black rimmed, the type that Irish kids unlucky enough to have had to rely on medical card glasses in the 80s would have got. Have it on good authority that it is intended to project themselves as more intelligent.

tbh the only ethnic group in Ireland proportionately more attractive than Irish women are Brazillians and other South Americans. Slovaks are generally pretty nice but Ive met some who a hitman wouldnt take out.

The irony being that many East European women are more orange than the Shankill on July 12th. But the oompa loompa ranting is seemingly reserved for D4 women.

So what I want to ask is this: how does one win, being an Irish woman nowadays???? ]

You could stop measuring yourself according to the opinions of dateless wonders on After Hours and columnists in the Sunday IndoBeano and actually talk to some Irish men.

Off ye go so, we'll all be happy.

Maybe we could organise a permanent exchange, swap our women for the women of another country.

    I vote for Sweden.

    Agreed.
Most West European women have a very conservative dress sense. Anything that Irish women wear that poses a remote risk of getting a tan is considered prostitute-style dress.
Kinda agreed, particularly the French. It's considered not appropriate, but that's usually in the work environment.
Alot of Spanish and Italian women insist on wearing red rimmed glasses, or thick black rimmed, the type that Irish kids unlucky enough to have had to rely on medical card glasses in the 80s would have got. Have it on good authority that it is intended to project themselves as more intelligent.
I've traveled extensively in both countries and I would not agree. You're talking about a very narrow subset of those countries women. I know the type you refer to though. Middle class "nerd" or finance types.

Actually I will say that how one dresses for a particular job is much more evident overseas. If you work in IT in Barcelona, you're going to get a much more skewed view of women(and men) than if you worked in sales say. In Ireland that's very different. Which is good.
tbh the only ethnic group in Ireland proportionately more attractive than Irish women are Brazillians and other South Americans.
Oh yes. Them, the Icelandics for some reason and the Slovakians.

    Double agreed.

Sure sounds like an insecurity thing. Never mind your lifestyle choices, just look at the way you're trying to qualify eveything in front of a bunch of strangers. I'm guessing you're image concious to the point of narcissism?

Be natural. Rosy cheeked women will beat a tango'd freak such as yourself any day of the week.

Ah - was trying to put across the point that although i take all these measures to look my best I still come up against the whole Jeez wish irish women would lay off the tan/make-up/clothes effort and just be natural!!!! While many others give out that we don't do enough.

    "Tangoed freak???" What's that about??

Knew someone would accuse me of bein vain!!! See??? Can't win!!!!!:D

In fairness it is an office type environment Im in, and we have had some cracking Spaniards in the canteen alright (one of them looked like Roasrio Dawson. Christ almighty  :) ). Do see some nice ones on certain club nights they attend in big numbers as well.

I hate fake tan soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. If most girls would just realise when to put the damn bottle down and enough is enough it would be fine, but no they slop it on there turning each and every one of them into oversized Umpa lumpas. :D

But surely being healthy should be motivation enough, not just being slim so you can look good in a bikini.

Of course it should, but it too seldom is.

I think also the Poles are very well classified as very hot or not hot - there's a lot more 'average' women in Ireland I'd say.

And off topic, but do the poles really eat swans?

Im on your side, thats why

In a nutshell, ask more Paddys for their opinion.

Please mention that they should exclude South American women when giving it, as in truth they simply cannot be beat :p

Some people are full of sh1te anyway. A recent poll on boards had something like 47& of respondants claiming to have a foreign other half.

ffs, 4 years in one of Irelands most foreign-present areas and Im not sure Ive ever seen a Pole with an Irish girl.

See there's no talking to you. Irish women with fake tan don't "look their best". Whomever gave you this idea should be shot. Basically you're the female equivilant of a combover, you're lying to yourself and everyone who looks at you. Worst part is everybody knows except you.

Gotta agree, I think women who wear make-up are hiding something and lack self confidence. can't even understand how women make the time to put it on. Wat do you get up 5 in the morning? Yup think its just that the grass looks greener from the other side....

...The reason I like a tanned look is I'm naturally quite pale and I think a tan looks sexy and slimming and healthy if applied in the correct manner (not too liberally and without streaks).

It *looks* a certain way, based on chemicals put on your skin, but it definitely ISN'T actually healthier.
We all know that after a sun holiday the majority of us look very healthy and more attractive [although this may be subject to debate].

And it *is* a certain way (the skin IS healthier and more attractive because it's reality after being exposed to a certain amount of sunlight)
I use make-up almost all of the time as I like to look my best. It's not an insecurity thing at this stage, I just like that it gives me extra confidence and I look a hell of a lot better with it on.

If you want extra confidence, than it definitely IS because you are insecure about the way you look. If you weren't you wouldn't be trying to boost your confidence with the skin tan for a LOOK that isn't actually really based on improved health and exposure to sunlight.
It feels like women like myself can't win in the "Irish girls don't make an effort and aren't attractive" argument.

As a man, I might be able to clarify from my point of view where this attitude is coming from. It is not that Irish women are physicially unattractive, are too pale, are too fat, etc., the same mix of physical shapes exists in all nations.

BUT, from my point of view, many Irish women lack femininity that is seen so obviously in for example Italian or French women. There is an ability there, and you know it when they are even walking down a street, that they exude femininity. Have a look at Baggot Street at quitting time, and you will spot the Irish women dressed mainly as men, or with ill fitting generic black skin tight pants. It's unfeminine and basically unattractive. Nothing to do with the physical attributes of the women, because a fat or thin or tall or short woman can look absolutely hot if she has femininity and style.

The gym, fake tan, make up (i.e., that comment on being au naturelle) it's basically to get rid of the superficial things that you DON'T see a lot of italian or french women doing, but instead they will dress and act female. Many Irish women I have found act and dress like men with tits attached.
On the flip side if we do tend to use tan and make up to improve our colour and complexions (something the foreigners get for free) we're lambasted by guys in equal measures who give out wildly about fake tan and make up and Irish women who look a state.

They may have said the foreign women are more attractive, but that didn't mean the foreign woman are wearing more make up or have darker skin, did it?So why did you decide that it did? Attractiveness comes from having a female presence, it attracts attention walking down a street, makes you want to beep the horn of your car, etc., . Any shape or facial beauty can do it, but it must exude femininity, not the fact that you are covered in chemicals. You can't purchase that.

Maybe the masses of money spent by Irish women on make up and fake tan would be better spent on an image consultant?

You see, if fake tan is applied right, you'd never even know it was fake.

So probably half the women you're eyeballing sometimes have faked it. Its just done well so you don't know.

Same with makeup. Men hear make up and they think eyeliner and blusher and lipstick and so on and so on, and bang on about how they like the natural look. Trouble is, the majority of these 'natural looking' women are wearing foundation.

Like a mate of mine going on and on about how his gf had beautiful skin, and never wore make up..... she just turned to him and said 'eh, you've never seen me without it'.

He didn't even know, because it was done right.
