Swimming - how much?

    Hiya,

I've just joined Total Fitness, and am looking forward to getting some swimming in during the week. I used to swim and play waterpolo a lot in college but haven't had the chance to keep it up.

I'm just wondering what benefits one session of swimming every week would have on my fitness? I'm planning on getting a weights program (a couple of times a week), probably a spinning session, pilates and maybe some aerobics. *(I'm a girl!)

How much swimming should I aim to do? Is it just another way of getting cardio in? It's easy enough to leisurely swim for half an hour, but to actually have some sort of program I guess would be beneficial!

Looking forward to your advice! Oh I guess I should tell you my aims - just want to increase overall fitness, build a bit of definition in my body again, but hopefully not look any bigger than I am (size 8).

    Thanks!

    Which TF are you in??

I know the one in Blanch has a big card holder stuck to the wall with a whole host of different "swim programmes" in it.

Sandyford! When I was there to sign up, I saw that card holder but there wasn't a single card there! :(

I swim for triathlon so mostly FS. You'll probably want to mix the strokes up a bit to get maximum benefit. The set I did yesterday was

    300 easy
    200 pull
    200 kick
    4x50 on 10 - flat out
    6x [ 3x50 on 20 and 1 x 200 on 10]
    20x25 breathing every 4,5,6th stroke
    300 easy.

it's a fairly typical tri set with
    warm up
something to concentrate the mind on technique
    something to knacker you
a main set to get the distance in
    a cool down.

I'm sure you can get similar things on google.

Thanks Hunnymonster - about what sort of time are you looking at for that workout?
Looks a bit much for the moment! :)

Don't mean to sound a pain Glowing, but there is a swimming forum located here.

They may be able to provide you with better answers for swimming programmes.

Thanks Naos, and I have had a look. It's a lot quieter over there, and to be honest, I'm more interested in how swimming can fit into a weekly fitness routine, and the benefits from a fitness point of view.

about an hour 20 or so. I run and cycle to time and swim to distance - for no good reason other than it suits me.

Cut the 3x50+200 out and you have a nice, short, sharp session?
