this will sound weird but can anyone with an oly set of weights measure the distance from the floor to the centre of the bar with the plates on of course!!

if you follow the link and have a look at the second pic its fairly self explanitory what im on about!!

Diameter of an oly plate is 450 mm so height off the ground roughly 225.

Proper olympic discs are approx 45cm in diameter, and the centre hole's 52-53mm.

So i guess the bar should be approx 20-21cm off the ground. The majority of discs conform to this. I know the irish-lifting ones don't, and are hence crap for deadlifting.

    EDIT: Damn, too slow.

Are they bigger or smaller, Hanley?

They're smaller. The irish-lifting plates are 38.5cm diameter. The bar would be 18cm off the ground so would need to be raised up about an inch for deadlifting... which I didn't realise til I read this thread!

*edit* That's the standard plates I should say... dunno about the olympic ones.

I have the standard 20kg irishlifting ones. I thought they were quite high, but are only around 190mm off the ground. However I usually put pillows or blankets under them both to cushion the dropping/setting down of the bar and to raise it up a little more, also stops it rolling around.

I also had an idea of getting bike wheels which could act as bumper plates and again raise and cushion the drop.

    Like those plastic BMX wheels

Thanks for the bump Hanley, the irish lifting 25kg plates are 450mm so are perfect for deadlifting, unsurprisingly the 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 or 20kg plates aren't 450mm, the smaller weights are also smaller in diameter!!!

That's amazing, because every other 20kg plate I've ever used or seen has been approx 450mm in diameter. I'm sure most other people would be the same. Especially the whole of the USA.... ya know since their "20kg" plates, the 45lb'ers (20.4kg) are 450mm in diameter too.

Yea powerlifting plates also have 5kg, 10kg and 15kg plates at 450mm, if you check all the home brands in kg like york, marcy (actually made in the same factory as mine, I just cut out middlemen to offer unbeatable prices, the marcy 20kg plate in the argos catalogue from the same factory is 66% more expensive than what I sell for) and myself they all have a smaller diameter as the weights get lighter.

The reason for the usa using 450mm for the 45lb plates is that thats as big as they go in weight, they dont have a 25kg equivalent in pounds so the heaviest plate should be 450mm.

Thanks again Hanley for bringing this to the attention of the people who are watching this thread, no joke I have just sold out of 25kg plates and I might order some std ones next time as I currently dont sell them! How ever can i repay you? Would you like a visit to my warehouse and a free shaker (all expenses paid of course)?

Hmmm... I never knew that about powerlifting plates. I've used the same gear that's used in the IPF world champs (you can actually see it in my vids), and it's only the 20kg and 25kg plates that are 450mm. All the others are sized based on weight.

You must be thinking of the bumper plates that they use in olympic lifting. Not to worry about it, it's a simple enough mistake to make. I woulda thought that as a supplier you'd be well versed in the differences tho??

As for the York and Marcy plates, that's fair enough. I guess when your target market is the non-serious lifting crowd then these concerns aren't as great. Any commerical grade 20kg plates that I've seen tho other than yours are 450mm.

    Mick and Hanley,

will you please stop flirting? I would like to see you both being a bit more civil to each other or you will both end up banned for a while.

25Kg would be good. As I said on other threads the trigrips allow you to hold them close to your side for lunges etc. Also many people will have the standard short argos bars and need all the room they can get for plates, if they want to also load on all the crappy small ones too.

I got other 20kg standard plates which are a good bit smaller than the irish-lifting 20kg standard tri-grips.

The new argos catalogue is out, and they increased the price hugely for the standard york 4x5kg and 2x10kg plates, they were €22.99 and are now €33.99
    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=30001&partNumber=3025862

BTW the new argos catalogue is huge, and they are now stocking decent stuff like samsung TVs and other top brand electrical goods, they also have a "argos value" range for really cheap stuff. I also think their cash back refund deal is now for 30 days rather than 16.

Could use a couple of them to prop up the bar for deadlifts. :D

    Guys,

I am looking to get 10kg/15kg bumper plates of the correct height for Oly Lifts.
Anyone know of a good place to get them ? Looking for reasonable quality. But not olympics quality ! :)

    Cheers,
    Dave

Jordan Free Weights recently supplied CF Ireland with our new bumpers and were a pleasure to deal with.

The shipping was very reasonable considering the weight of our order, and delivery was prompt. We ordered on Monday and had the weights on Friday (or rather, would have had I answered my bloody phone!!!)

    Highly recommended.
