Meet in Kerry

Anybody interested in a meet in Kerry?

Long term I was thinking of doing one in the killorglin for puck fair I think you could get good photographs during it but you would also require the security of a group (I'm figuring safety in numbers)

other than that I'm open to suggestions

one suggestion I have is doing the ring of kerry glenbeigh Valentia island caherdaniel sneem. all would have good photography potential. in the right weather of course.:)

we could do a walk around the national park in Killarney
Ladies view, the black valley and then head on over the mountains to kenmare.

North kerry there is a round tower, ardfert cathedral and the castle thingey up near ballylongford and listowel.

    then theres dingle peninsula.

    and Tralee.

ok at tyhe moment I'm looking for numbers (oh god I hope someone answers).

Depending on the date but I'd certainly like to try and do a meet. No great interest in the Puck but wouldn't mind a day around Killarney - maybe Torc and O'Sullivan's waterfalls, The Ring or around Dingle.

From my pov just pick a date and put it up to see who's interested.

Edited to add, I'll be travelling from Limerick is anyone needs a lift.

depending where I might be interested
    I'd be traveling from Kilkenny

Well sheesh! Tralee Photographic Society will be there anyway! All of us :D

Ive brought groups around the North Kerry route before, and it generally has not been very successful. You get some great shots of Rattoo Round Tower alright but after that you get kinda limited.

The Kenmare direction is usually a hit in good weather, but that of course means taking in the rally route, and most people will have been on this at some point.

We had a meet about two years ago where we went back Cloghane and Brandon Point, some nice shots from that day.

I'd be nearly inclined to suggest an early start and head West but not commercial Dingle style. Maybe hop on one of the boats out to the Blaskets and then concentrate on the remoter areas past Ventry and the like, some amazing spots out that way, if you know where to find them.

Just back from a few days in Kerry myself. Didn't really have amazing weather. But would suggest Muckross House/National Forest, Ross Castle, Torc Waterfall, Gap of Dunloe as a starting point. All of these are pretty close to each other.

I might be interested in this one. I have to check that my passport is up-to-date though. What's the currency in Kerry?

how does saturday the 9th of august sound to you lot.

    I'm thinking
    either
    killarney area.
    or
    dingle/slea head area.

    your thoughts please:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,978 ✭✭✭✭phog

In my earlier post I said just pick a date and now that you have the 9th doesn't suit me, off to Paris for a few nights so next wek-end is bad for me.

    Hopefully they'll be another meet.

    Interesting comment.

I've taken many photographs at the fair and have carried a variety of kit from a single camera and lens to my complete bag and have never encountered a problem to date. And yes, I was unaccompanied. I've shot both in the daytime and night time.

I have however noticed a rather undesirable element has crept into the fair over the past 3 or 4 years which is a pity, but you've got to have your wits about you where every you go anyways.

ok I'm getting a 'not very good actually' vibe from my first suggested date

    lets try another one......

what about 16th of august?? the following saturday.

    any advances on 16?

    :D

    thanks for that.
I am from Tralee but have never been. I have always heard that it was pretty rough though.

    Its not that bad.

Although I have noticed over the past few years that a forgien element has started to "operate" at the fair and the typical method is to surround some guy, who has a few pints too many on-board, with women rose sellers with gold teeth and the poor guy gets ripped off (his wallet takes a hike).

I seen this happening one guy and started snapping away making myself totally obvious and the women rose sellers with the gold teeth disappeared leaving him on his own again but with his wallet.

I know its a terrible thing to have to post but this really is the worst I've seen happen in many years at the fair.

I'd have no hesitation in bringing expensive equipment out and about unacompanied, its of no real interest to the "rouge" element who operate there, however I bring a minimum of cash and don't keep it in my pocket.... Mainly because I'm distracted in trying to get a few shots.

Geat fair for some candid shots with a 70 - 200mm lens, especially the horse fair.

As I have been finding out, apparently much more difficult than that =/

Who knew, I thought you photographer folks had it easy! This is all that was salvageable from my first real attempt (About 300 shots over two days) http://4o3.net/newphoto/ In most of the ones with movement I seem to have the shutter speed too long. And the last one came out way too dark. (Ross castle on Monday afternoon, the last one was taken by the boathouse there on Tuesday evening).

With regard to field trips, I drive, and I am perfectly happy to carry along passangers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭sheesh

with digital that happens alot. I remember reading some article saying to fill your card that you should take alot of different shots of the same thing.

it went something along the lines of 'your memory card should be filled with bad shots of the same thing to show your trying and then one good one to show you know what you are doing'.

most of mine cannot be kept either :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭sheesh

    Hi
I'm thinking Killarney as we can probably expect rain so I feel we can get Torc and Muckross without getting too wet if its sunny we can go up past ladys view
    and maybe over to kenmare.
I'll give a run over there today and find a place to meet up and a couple of alternative places to shoot. expected time on Saturday is 10 o'c.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,281 ✭✭✭Ricky91t

If I'm coming I'll be travelling from Limerick instead of busing it do you need a pick up somewhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

I might go. If I go, there'll be one place in my car.
To be there at ten, I would have to leave Dublin at 6. With some time reserve...

Ok took a tour around kilarney area today

    the plan for saturday is

meet in the gap of dunloe Carpark at 10 (is that too early?) 2hrs

    +15-20 mins travel time

muckross castle 30-45 mins its just the castle and some boats but there is a wood around there so we could extend that.

    10 mins to Muckross house.

for food I was thinking the cafeteria in Muckross house or we could buy a sandwich some where and head from there to muckross abbey

10 to 5 mins to torc we can decide on the day whether we want to use the upper or lower carparks
    1-2hrs torc waterfall

weather permitting go up to ladies view and/or the meeting of the waters

if weather is not permitting we might just go home. Alternatively head back into muckross gardens where we will have some shelter.

    How does that sound?

I suggest bringing rain wear (leggings and jacket) and plastic bags for everything else.

finally you are responsible for your own safety on this trip no sneakily suing me afterwards for falling over. *Shakes fist*

The gap is a bit far outside town, might be better to meet in Killarney and car pool out. No point in bringing a bunch of extra cars. Especially with people unfamiliar with the area. Some places (such as the abbey) can be a bit short on parking too.

Do you mean Ross Castle? There are also the copper mines about 10 or 15 minutes walk from there and Killarney House is near enough too. If it's dry there is also the option of boating to the monastery ruins on inishvallen island

From what I know the cafe there is a bit over priced. Molly Darcy's has always been reasonable enough for hot food any time I have been there though.

Depending on the weather we could do both. We could also walk from the bottom up and back down again. (It's 15-20 min each way)

Other areas that might be worth while are Adhadoe, there is the ruins of a round tower there and a stunning view. It might be best to swing by there on the way back from the Gap.

It has been particularly wet here in Kerry for the last few days, so I'm just gonna repeat your warning about wearing wet gear too, I would also suggest wearing hiking boots if you have them, a lot of the places we will be going do get quite slippery.

The forecast for Saturday is Light Rain, but we all know how reliable that can be =)

these are all brilliant suggestions I think you should organise this trip!!!:D

    but seriously

Carpooling car pool all you want people. if anybody does not know the way to the gap I can meet them in the lidl carpark or pm me their number and ill give them directions on the day its basically out the road to killorglin and turn left.

It could be a little rain so who ever will driving could be driving back with
car pooling means wet stuff in your car. Get your own car hippie!!:)

I shall be in my own empty car.

most places around the national park will be lovely on a sunny dry day so the thought around the trip was what will we do if it rains.

Going to the island sounds great but cost is a factor as well there. Any idea of how much per head it would cost to bring 5-6 people out there? and rain is a big factor going out there again.

Molly darcys sounds fine. again we can decide on the day.

My father has a boat which I could nick for the day without problem. If it's raining the middle of the lake would be a nightmare for all the gear.

I can bring people in my car if needs be. I can take three (In addition to myself).

I think maybe the Lidl car park may be a better meeting point. It's closer and easier to find coming from either the Cork (Just cut accross the bypass) or Tralee/Limerick/Dublin (Just on your right as you enter town) route. Also the gap road might not be the best for any townies we manage to attract =)

This really is going to be dependent on the weather though, but there is certainly plenty to see here either way!

Just mentioning a boat with people on it, on a rainay day could lead to some good photo oppurtunities!

I was just speaking to one of the writers of the Kerryman newspaper this morning and I mentioned that I was after picking up photography as a new hobby. He told me that what would be a great thing to get, and that there is mad demand for because as far as he knows no one has got it yet, is a photo of one of the eagles released around here in flight.

So keep your eyes open on Saturday and you might be able to earn a few quid =)

Maybe we should all just go searching for the eagles then,I though in the end they weren't introducd to killarney cause of the sheep farmers complaining that the eagles will eat their lambs?

Ill let people know how im getting back there hopefully by tonight

They would be pretty hard to find.

Well, I have already been to most places in the plan. Just the waterfall is new. So I am not going. I'll wait to build up more interests in that area.

    Thank you for all information.

    From met.ie - 3 Day Outlook

.... Very wet and humid on Saturday with rain in all areas, heavy and thundery at times and possible totals of 20 to 30mm overnight Friday and during Saturday with flooding likely in places. The rain will turn more showery later in the day with some brighter weather developing in western and southern areas during the evening. ......
