cost of gym in Dublin 15 area

    hi all,

I am hoping to join a gym shortly as I need to lose (a lot of) weight :( and get more active and used to love going to the gym until my studies took over! I am living in the Dublin 15 area and looking to see what my options are. They basically seem to be Westpoint or Total Fitness... Total Fitness is nearer to me and therefore it seems more logical to join there as this will help when it comes to actually motivating myself until I get back into the swing of things...

However, last week when I phoned for prices I was amazed at the difference between the two! Total Fitness is the best part of €600 (over €730 if you do the direct debit option) for one year. Westpoint is only €295 for 14 months... I'm wondering what the major differences are between the two? Obviously I don't want to spend an extra €300 but I'm not sure I would attend Westpoint due to where it is located...

Has anyone any advice? I'm quite body conscious and given my need to lose weight I want a nice gym with a good selection of classes and a pool where I can feel comfortable.

Sorry if this rambles a bit but I guess basically what I want to know is:
    1. What is the difference that makes Total Fitness feel they can charge so much more?
    2. Given what I have said about myself which gym would people recommend?
    3. Does anyone know of any other gyms or any way to get a cheaper rate in Total Fitness? ;)

    Thanks!

Paid less than your price for Total Fitness for Crunch Fitness in Westmanstown. Granted it is a bit further away.

think Coolmine sports centre is 240e a year. It has a pool, sauna, jacuzzi and gym... granted the gym doesnt have ALL the mod-cons, and the pool can be in use a lot. Its another option though...

Westpoint is a perfectly good gym. I was skeptical before I trained there with Naos one night, but there's nothing you can't do there. A bit too warm for my liking tho.

Kevpants (a poster here) left Westmanstown for TF and he said he much prefers TF. I'm sure he'll come on and give his opinions tho.

I would definately pick TF over Westpoint at any price. But I'm alot more demanding when it comes to gyms.

if you just want a decent one that you can do most stuff in then Westpoint would be fine.

I am curious why you'd go to TF and not Westpoint tho, since they're right beside each other.

I'd be fairly biased against Westmanstown due to an argument I had with them over a squat rack (they don't have one, I used the Roman chair as a rack, they told me I couldn't, I asked them to buy a rack, they said no, I asked them to kiss my ass).

Alot of the PT's are muppets e.g.
Me:"Can I have a spot on the bench?"
    Foreign PT: "What is spotty?"

You probably aren't looking at the weights as much from the sounds of your post but I didn't see many classes and the pool is very cramped, my wife likes a swim and was always giving out about the size of the pool.

It is cheap though. TF is undoubtedly better but that bit more expensive.

Westpoint I didn't consider because AFAIK it's the fave of the tracksuit and celtic top bodybuilder and I thought it would be a bit too busy because it's so cheap, funnily enough.

Hanley is right though TF is actually the warmest place in the world. You walk in the door and you're sweating llike Peter Andre on Countdown. I'm drenched lifting weights I couldn't imagine doing cardio there. Then again I am fat.:o

I meant more in relation to equipment, classes, what is covered in membership etc...

Total Fitness gave a bit of information about classes, personalised programmes, etc when I spoke to them but the girl in Westpoint literally just gave the price and hung up...

Hi there, I was in the same boat as you, looking for a decent gym near by. I was with Westwood in Clontarf, brilliant gym with great classes. I moved recently but still havnt found a good gym. I joined TF but the classes were rubbish with badly trained instructors, especially the spinning classes so I stopped the membership.

The gym is very big with plenty of equipment, the equipment is a little dated as are the showers. I am comparing this to other gyms I have been to. I would say if you are looking for good classes dont go here.

I joined Westpoint last week, they're doing an August specail offer at the moment, if you join for a year you get 5 months free at a cost of €320. My brothers in Crunch Fitness and they have a lot more facilities like the courts etc, but its more expensive, im not sure by how much but if you're willing to go a bit further to Westpoint then Id recommend going for the offer

How long ago was that?? They got a load of new instructors recently and the majority of them are great.

It was only a month or so ago, I thought they were useless myself but maybe I was just unlucky with the instructors that gave the classes. Compared to the instructors in Westwood, they didnt seem as well trained, or as fit (they spent 3/4 lesson off the bike themselves, one drinking diet coke before), they just didnt seem as professional. I was totally put off and cancelled my membership as soon as I could.

Girl Friday I think you're looking for a bit of privacy when you work out so Total Fitness is better for you as they have a ladies only gym which is a small section with some machines but you may feel more comfortable there. Also the pool in Westpoint is very open so Total Fitness is much better in this respect also. I was a member of the two a few years back.

    HI

I was a member of TF last yr, did find the womens gym very comfortable if your feeling a bit concious but they dont have enough classes on in the evenings. really didnt feel i got value for money there, have heard the national aquatic centre in Blanch is reasonable, might be worth checking out.

The gym in the NAC is very, very small. I don't think they do that many classes in the evening, they certainly don't have the same number that TF does.

The one good thing about it though is that you get to use both of the pools.

There is a new sports centre in <snip> with a gym. It has all new equipment aldo it basic, enought to get you started. It also has free weight and benches but no squat rack yet! There doing a pay as you use 5 euro a session plus they are starting classes by the end of the month.

That really irked me for some reason. Also you're a PT, don't ask me how I know, I just know. I have powah. This site is not for advertising your personal business ventures.
