Loads of new stuff, both from 1.41 and the 2.0 beta, there is a good list of changes here.

    Loads to start learning tonight....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Looks really good. I might just upgrade to this later tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Arciphel

    Sweet!

Prices - I was looking at the upgrade prices.

If you buy the US upgrade price, it works out at €63. If you order through the Irish upgrade site, it's €118. That's some difference in price, for a download.

But paul, shur, the water rates, and the refuse collection prices, and the strong euro, and the higher minimum wage here in ireland, and the bad weather, and the price of diesel, and the cost of a tin of beans in Dunnes Stores, shur, we couldn't sell it for any less, we'd go out of business!

Impressive. Will probably upgrade later in the week once a
    suitable "fix" is available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

if only for the local fix capability, neutral grad and Minus clarity.

This is a touch overdone, but I was able to 'save' the sky in thie pic in a minute

The local fix, and dual monitor support would very much interest me.

I've emailed Adobe about the price. It might be worth my while to wait and buy it in the US when I visit in Sept.

Might be getting a list from people wanting the cheaper version matey!!! ;):D

Will be a definite purchase for me anyway. LR is the biz.
Mightily miffed at the price though to be honest, there's no way they can justify $299 versus €301 just because you click on a link in one country instead of another.

Another thing I noticed - the boxed software (CD) is cheaper than the download version.

    It's a world gone mad !!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

Installed version 2.0 there this evening. Seems really unstable.
It has been eating over 90% cpu for the last half an hour since
    installing it.

Its hardly rendering 1.1 previews or something is it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭smelltheglove

Since you're mentioning cpu and based on the pictures provided above by cambo I'm thinking I may revert to lightroom possibly.

I have CS2 and I could never get into it. I am a big corel fan as I started using them when I was 17 and got my first pc I got free corel software so I have readily upgraded my software constantly. I have always had cpu issues though and even the new x11 version I haven't noticed much difference and cpu is still high.

Would you guys recommend lightroom above cs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭viking

If only I knew a student who could purchase the full version for me for €99 ex. VAT.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

Most people look at lightroom as a way of doing lots of simple alterations to
    alot of photos really quickly.

CS2/3 would then be the next step when you need to do something more complicated.
So in essence they complement each other.

Currently I do about 90% of PP in Lightroom. I could see that going up to 99% in LR 2.0 with the new tools

First impressions are positive, will take a bit of adjusting to but everything I liked in V1.4 is still there & works so thats good. I found it very slow also but then i went into the preferences and increase my RAW cache size from 1.0 to 20 GB, seems to have improved things somewhat.

Thanks guys. I just find CS2 a lot harder to navigate that's why I haven't bothered with CS3, I had a go of it but pretty much the smae thing, jus can't get used to it. I suppose as I used corel for so long. I may give lightroom a chance though. Hopefully CPU isnt as bad as paint shop!

I think its disgraceful Lightroom 2 costs €189 from the US store, €259 from the UK store and €301 from the Irish store

Tax differences go no way to explain the price differences - absolute rip off - its a digital download - no box, no packaging, no postage or handling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 720 ✭✭✭Ravage1616

Bit me a rip off with the price difference! But guess that's the world we live in now!

does anyone know if lightroom2 fixes the raw file colour desaturation issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

A new version of Adobe Raw came out yesterday too. Raw 4.5, and is available for download.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Some interesting video options on the improvements in Lightroom -

I've installed it (don't ask me where I got it from)
and I have to say the dual screen is great and very quick
I'll watch that video soon and I may give it a go
probably I'll have to see somebody using it to find out if will be any good for me

what would stop someone from asking a friend in USA to purchase and download, then email the .exe for install on a computer here in Ireland? anyone know if this would work?

I'm just curious about the above question, I don't plan on actually doing it.

For me, Lightroom 1.x has paid for itself many times over and it looks like the upgrade cost of eur118.00 is good value

Aside from the email being a few hundred mb in size???

It's more the license key you need, rather than the .exe file.

I don't know if the license key is country specific, when you have to activate the product.

While it is a brilliant product and well worth the price, I am just furious that we're being ripped off, paying twice the price that you'd pay in the US.

email / ftp whatever.....few hundred megs isn't that much these days.

I agree that Adobe seem to be taking the piss with the pricing, but it's not anything new or unique to Adobe. That's global economics at work I guess. Sad fact of life for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

You can download the full version (trial version) from the Adobe website. All you then need is the license key to activate the product.

The price has nothing to do with global economics. It's greed. They simply set a price - US $99 for upgrade, Europe €99 (ex Vat) for upgrade. It just happens to mean, (with exchange rates) that the US version is almost half the price of the EU version, for the exact same product.

I may wait and buy the upgrade version when I visit the US in Sept.

You are dead right Paul, and it looks as if the storm over it starting to overshadow the actual product, there's a bit of a movement growing up.

Loads of folks are making their feelings known on John Nacks blog, he is Principal Product Manager, Adobe Photoshop, might be no harm if folks let him know how they feel.

I havn't had much time to play with the software itself, bot I have to say that my initall impressions are extremely positive.

I watched all the videos in Paul's link and have been playing
with Lightroom constantly the last couple of days and it is
    fantastic.

My main feature of note is that they have sorted out the
"folders" section so now you can actually find your photos using
the same hierarchy layout as the drive the photos are on as opposed
to the hundreds of folders before.

Photoshop integration is also much improved as demonstrated on
the videos in Paulw's link. Very impressed with the HDR, Panorama
    integration.

The keyworking is also improved and the new "smart collections" are
    really cool.

@ cambo_gueno, I never realised until now (after watching vids above)
how much stuff can be done in Lightroom without having to go to
    photoshop.

Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't be able to wait till september to
    upgrade. :)

I hear your cries brother! I'm already finding it difficult to go back to LD 1.3 having use LR 2.0 for the past two days. I suppose we'll just have to swallow the price difference...:pac:

I've been reading John Nack's blog, not only can you buy LR2 upgrade for $99 in the US but you can get a 15% discount with discount codes (where ever you get them). This is taking the p*ss too far. Personally I'm fed up with been screwed in this country. Adobe are just adding to the insult. I've added my tupence worth to his blog.

    Up the rebels !!!!!

    ps.

IMO anybody who purchases the upgrade has more money than sense and adds to the rip-off culture that we have been living with. Speak with your mind and keep your hands in your pockets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

I don't think everyone in this thread actually "purchased" the upgrade.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Those discounts are for journalists, sports photographers, members of professional associations, and such.

Some of those associations have international members, and the international members can't even avail of the discounts. Now that is really going too far.

The more who comment on his blog about prices the better, and I've seen his thread link in many international fora now. The wider the spread the better.

I left a very tame, factual post on the blog pointing out the discrepancy several hours ago and it has not been approved yet.

Now I know there's a time difference between us and the States so I can only hope that's the reason it was not approved yet.

Then again that blog entry does have all the makings of an advert.

depending on where in the US, its between 12am and about 4pm:pac:

And I left the comment 'several hours ago' CM. The ability to leave a message there was stopped about 9am their time though, he probably got into the office and saw a load of negative posts and disabled commenting.

    PS3 or CS3??? :D

My PS3 is running fine, and the graphics are great. It's brilliant for slideshows of your photos, on a large screen (40" TV).

My CS3 update went well too, and everything is working fine.

Now, if I could just get Lightroom 2 at the right price.

you can only do so much before you need something like photoshop, which is better suited for intricate work.

My guess would be that the serial numbers are tied to regions, so although you might get your serial number by buying in the US, when you try to activate the product it'll fail. I'm not saying this is what will happen, but having read tales of people merely trying to move licenses from PC to Mac or vice versa, I'd be fairly confident that'll be the outcome

anyone find working with Medium RAWs on light room to be very slow, in comparison to jpegs or smaller files.

    On 3ghz with 3gb of ram :/

edit : must try increasing cache in options [posted before]

I couldn't update camera raw because I'm running PS CS2 and didn't plan on updating to CS3 yet but I might have to because LR2 is still messing up the saturation in my photos.

It's actually really annoying me because I like to shoot cars, my fav being the Orange Lamborghini Diablo that I posted before, but lightroom strips out the orange and turns it yellow, and it's hard to get it back. Here's an example...

loading - loaded - adjusted back
    presetra3.jpg

No I've set up a preset to get it back as close as possible, but the problem is this - the car has a yellow/gold flake tint when the sun hits it, and because lr sets the orange to yellow, when I adjust it back, it makes all the yellow turn orange, and I loose the yellow tint - pain in my ass with it at this stage!

this photo wasn't too hard to reset, but others have been very time consuming!

Your license for Lightroom has always been a dual license, so you can load it on a Mac and PC (dual boot system) legally.

As for Adobe - http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/07/lightroom_2_is_here.html Loads of new posts in his blog.

Paulw: PSCS3 - but it was "free" edition from the internet. Now I have to find some serial numbers generator again... :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Don't you mean it was a trial edition download and now you need to buy a serial number?? :D
