A hot bath or shower before getting into bed?

Do you get much physical activity during the day.. A walk in the fresh air in the evening helps..

Also reading... Not something too dramatic, but something light.. It helps for me..

Getting yourself comfy in the bed, try and tuck yourself in and arrange pillows comfortably.

Dont watch telly immediately before going to bed Or the computer (:() give your head some time to wind down.

Are you worried about stuff? Try and talk it over during the day with someone.. Or even write a few words in a diary.. I usually dont sleep when I am stressed about stuff... (which is most of the time.)

Anyhow. I hope something out of this can help you..

    Night night!!

but i manage to sleep fine when i'm with my boyfriend.

I'm a guy but I'll give my two cents anyways. ;)

I have exams coming up (really important ones not like my college ones :p) and I'm having trouble sleeping.

Everything Quality said is great advice. If I don't get a run in sometime during the day I can't sleep.

If I find I'm tossing and turning during the night I try not to force myself to sleep. I mean lying in bed thinking I'll fall asleep in a minute. I'll get up and walk around (which might seem like it is waking you up more but it relaxes the mind). I'd make myself a cup of tea or drink some water, read the paper, anything to get my mind off what I was thinking about.

If none of that is working (I would only have to do this once a year) I bring my duvet downstairs and lie on the couch and watch some tv. I hate doing it but it takes my mind off what I was thinking about and I drift off to sleep. I usually wake up half an hour later and go to bed and my mind is too tired to care about what it was worried about.

    Hope this helps.

A friend of mine has a routine for when he can't sleep. Bowl of cornflakes and a **** as he so eloquently puts it.

    Honestly 2 things may help.

    1. Do a crossword. Believe it or not mental exhaustion is far more likely to inspire sleep than physical. When you are tired breaking a light mental sweat can help sleep. Hence why so many people read books before sleep.

    2. Get an electric blanket. If you have no issue sleeping with your boyfriend you may have acclimatised to his presence. Cuddle a pillow and warm the bed more than you would have it when alone and your body should feel more comfortable and similar to when you are when your boyfriend, thus helping with sleep.

Hope that helps. Alternatively call the bf and get him to come over to "help you get some sleep". I can't imagine he'd mind :D

Good one, you might be cold! I had an awful time sleeping last winter. I was waking up twice every night which isn't the best during 6th year! Eventually I figured out my body was too cold though I didn't feel chilly. I added an extra duvet and have slept soundly ever since, keeping the extra even in summer.

I'm sure he'd drive an hour to cuddle up beside you! Especially if you told him you would thank him later!

I'd say it's depends on what you are watching tv/ movies wise, a book is far more likely to keep me up and wake reading on then watching something in the back ground.

This weather it is hard to get to sleep, baths are good but I would tend to go for a cycle if needs be, don't care what time of the am it is once my other co parent is at home I will bugger for an hours cycle.

I do find that the same movie which I have seen nearly a hundred time will help me nod off, either blade runner ( with the wonderful sound track) or Dune tends to do it.
Ended up starting to watch Dune last night after 3am guess it will be blade runner to night.

You are good to be worried about your boyfriend rather than just nag him about not spending as much time with you these days. It sounds like you realise that's the last thing he needs. If his workload is worrying you that might contribute to your sleep issues though. Maybe talk to him about it and let him know you are supportive of course:D

I always find that Braveheart makes me fall asleep. Bring the laptop to bed throw it on and im asleep in probably about half hour. Either that or short walk. I have found it difficult to sleep in this weather. Its too warm, so put a fan beside the bed but then the noise of it keep me awake. Acutally, i do have very restless sleeps of late. Maybe just eating too late!

    /sorry i didn't help at all.

As you said you tried lavender oil before.

I wouldn't be so keen to put it on my pillow. I generally burn a blend of oils in my room an hour or so i'm to go to sleep so it fills the room. If i'm having trouble sleeping i'd maybe blend some lavender and chamomile or ylang ylang together or my other fave combo is Orange, Lavender/Geranium and Sandalwood/Frankincense/ylang Ylang

I don't have any other solutions. I do find though that if i put on sky news and it's just repeating the same things over and over that it does make me sleepy!

Tesco had a lavender pillow spray in their B Naturals range. If it can make my mother fall asleep at night it's worth its weight in gold, so give it a shot if you see it. It's about €5. I find rescue remedy great for almost everything too.

    Hey there,

I used to be that way too, my body was asleep but my mind was racing. I used an acient budhist meditation technique which really works. First off dont set yourself up to fail, no caffee or other stimulents before bed and only have a light evening meal. You will find it hard to keep still if you are producing energy.

Next the whole technique is bases off the practice of letting go. By that i mean when something goes wrong you must acknowledge it, if you ignore it and try to carry on it will bother you, and then progress to the next stage like it is just another step as you walk.

Begin by closing your eyes, take 4 deap breaths in. Then breath normally and count your breaths in =one, out =2, in = 3, out=4 ... and continue to ten and then begin again at one. The important thing is not to concentrate on what type of breathing you are doing just on counting. You will lose count.... this is when you must acknowledge it by saying to yourself "i lost count" and one breath, then begin again. If you lose count it is a good thing because it means your brain is relaxing. You will find yourself drifing off and becoming aware you lost count, acknowledge it and begin again.

It will take about two days to train your mind to relax, you can do this anywhere to become centered especially if you have had an upsetting phone call or a stressful day. Your body will take longer to train. within a week if done properly you will be able to lie your head down on your pillow and within about 10 min be asleep.

    Try it, it really works

I dont have a problem with sleeping at all, but a couple of years ago when my Dad was sick it was a very stressfull time and leeping was an issue so I got one of those microwaveable lavendar teddy bears and it was the best thing I ever bought!!!! It really helped relax me and I got some sleep when I really really needed it!!

+1 to lavender and meditation. Try use real lavender though. I have a little lavender plant in my garden and snip off a few stems and slip it under between the pillow and case - lie direcly on it.

    Meditation cds are deadly......

sorry but i don't take tablets i'm afraid. find it very hard to take them so only take them when i'm seriously seriously sick.

I just found a lavendar plant in my garden. I also find it hard to sleep sometimes even though I'm exhausted. I'm just the kind of person that finds it hard to switch off.

What can I do with fresh lavendar? Do people just crumble it up and smell it or can you put it in old tights or something to freshen up your drawers?

Now that I have ready access to lavendar I'd like to do something with it!

said above you can get it in dropper form too ie liquid into a drink.
a mate swears by it,and theyre an insomniac, they also use melatonin other times, again all natural.

So sorry your finding it difficult to sleep. Its so frustrating...

Heres my tips (i've had insomnia before, and this is what I've come up with)

    1. Go for a walk or do some light exersise around 8pm (if ur goin 2 sleep ~11)

    2. Remove caffeine from your diet - use decaf tea & coffee, or if this is too tough, just have your last cuppa caffeine around 4pm.

    3. Lavender on your pillow is great. I dot one drop either side.

    4. Make sure your room is well ventillated. Open your window during the day or for an hour or so before bedtime.

    5. Before bedtime, write a list of what you need to do tomorrow; a list of any problems you may face and how you will deal with them; and also what you are looking forward to tomorrow.

    6. If you are finding it really difficult to nod off after an hour or so, I always change beds (if poss). So make sure your spare room is ready, curtains closed etc. - this usually does the trick for me.

    Hope this helps! :)
