Happy enough with this draw for Mayo ... always have the measure of Tyrone in the championship games.

Good draws, I can see 4 close games here.

    All hard to call.

Yeah 4 good ties will the 1st team be at home or played at neutral venue?

Monaghan vs Kerry will be a humdinger, same with Mayo vs Tyrone.

In last weeks draw the first team out drawn had home venue. Presumably it's the same this week?

    TBA Tomorrow evening I think!

nuetral venue, prob be Kerry monaghan and wexford down double header in croker

GAA will decide venues and times tomorrow. Fixture will next weekend though. RTE have slots on both Saturday and Sunday for the qualifers.

My guess is that Kerry V Monaghan and Tyrone V Mayo will be the selected live games.

I reckon, Croke Park is a likely venue for at least double header - most likely involving Kildare.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,929 ✭✭✭raven136

decent enough draw for kildare but id fancy them more if it was packed house in newbridge and not a croker double header.
Anyone know what time the throw ins will be announced at tomorrow?

Only problem there is Kerry will not probably have enough numbers.

Could see Portlaoise or Navan getting a game.

Personally I'd love to see Tyrone V Mayo & Monaghan V Kerry
as a double header in Croker but as said above they are likely to be the two televised games and therefore won't be on together.

Four really interesting ties though. I'd love Monaghan to have a real go at Kerry, hopefully the Donegal game will have given them good confidence.
I'm totally torn for the Tyrone/Mayo game though. Tyrone (particularly in the 1st 20 minutes) showed some impressive stuff against Westmeath. If Mayo come in with the we don't do well in the qualifiers approach it will damage their chances (this coming from a Mayo girl) It's all head v heart stuff.

may be a stupid question, but where are limerick? game was a draw last nite wasn't it?

Edit oops ignore sorry just saw the actual result..good win for the lilywhites!

no they lost last night. 1-11 to 0-11.

Nice set of ties. I would be suprised if the Kerry game is not closer to their home. Could Thurlas be a potentail venue ?

I reckon Mayo/Tyrone and Fermanagh/Kildare could be in Longford or Sligo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭shiibata

I think these 4 games are neutral venue..

Tyrone v mayo; would call a draw here

Down v wexford; Going for down here, wexford must be gutted after the leinster final

kildare v fermanagh; another tight call, have a sneaky feeling for kildare though

kerry v monaghan; easiest to call, handy win for kerry, yes, handy win

Would be nice to see all the Ulster teams :) and good to see fermanagh avoided the 3 ulster teams to make this possible

Kerry, Kidare, Down, Tyrone v Cork, Dublin, Armagh, Galway

With Kerry unable to get Cork it would be nice to see a huge tussle between Kerry and Dublin while Tyrone get to take on Cork and Galway hit Tyrone. If that is the case Kildare will struggle against Armagh

i would think the fixtures would be -

Tyrone v Mayo - dr hyde park

    Down v Wexford - portlaoise

    Kildare v Fermanagh - navan

    Monaghan v Kerry - portlaoise

Tyrone wouldn't he happy with Sligo or Roscommon but sure Donegal played Galway in Castlebar in 03! Longford may be too small. Portlaoise maybe an option too here!

    Maybe Salthill for Kerry?

Navan and Portlaoise makes senses for 2 of them at least.

Tyrone v mayo; Mayo will not fear Tyrone, Heard Cavanagh is out too, but Tyrone look like clicking some day! I can see them hitting 1-15/16 here! Tyrone by 2.

Down v wexford; Depends on how Wexford react to the Dubs hammering. Dan Gordon is supposed to be out. Two suspect defences. Down by 3/4 points.

kildare v fermanagh; Depends on how Fermanagh react after today but no better team! Two suspect forward lines here. Fermanagh will probably be wrote off again! Kildare by 3.

kerry v monaghan; Has to be Kerry by 3/4 points and 3 sending offs! ;)

I highly doubt you'll see any of these games in Croker. No point in having them there, although I'd gladly go along to a double header on a Sunday involving two of these games in Croke Park as a neutral as I'd say there'll be some super football.

I reckon Monaghan might shock a few people too...

Yeh. it's about time we had some talk about football styles on this forum. People tend to look at the team sheets and also judge who they beat in previous rounds and come to a pretty rigid judgement call.

Monaghan are going to be incredibly difficult for Kerry to handle, I fancy them to beat the Kingdom. As a Mayo supporter, I was dreading drawing Monaghan as well.

Mayo will be happy with the draw against Tyrone.

Fermanagh/Kildare has great potential for a classic.

This is the best Championship in years.

As a Monaghan girl I've never felt as sick to the stomach about a football match as I did about last year's defeat to Kerry (which by way of circumstances I had to watch in a pub in Tralee) so although my heart sank when I heard the draw, the chance for Monaghan to get their own back is appealing. Fingers crossed the lads can pull it off, we almost had them last year and the pride in the Monaghan jersey is wonderful to see

Funnily enough I was one of the few on here to give Monaghan a right chance last year. Kerry are well warned this time. Midfield will be crucial.

Tyrone v Mayo - Tough to call. Both teams blow hot and cold. Has the makings of the game of the round. If I were pushed, I'd plump for Mayo just. Reckon they have one more big win in them!

Down v Wexford - Down all the way here. Wexford might stay with them for 40-50 minutes. Down are fit this year, serious amount of work the get through.

Kildare v Fermanagh - As a Kildare man, I'm biased here. I can see this being close. I honestly dont think this Kildare team can do big wins. It all depends on how Fermanagh are physically and mentally after the two bouts with Armagh. Barry Owens will be missed if he is out. Can see Fermanagh have more of the ball, they win a lot around the middle 8 in general. Their conversion rate is poor when compared to possession. Kildare will depend on Johnny Doyle as always. Dermot Earley will need to drag a performance out of the bag in the middle to help Killian Brennan.

Monaghan v Kerry - Monaghan by a few here. They owe Kerry one and can win primary possession better than Kerry (without Galvin).

Well the Tommy Murphy final is on Croker on Sunday....i would love love to see a kerry/monaghan mayo/tyrone and the final triple header in Croker on Sunday.....if not im praying Mayo are down for Croker, cant get the time off on Saturday and im told if i call in sick il be sacked....decisons decisions.....

Im pretty excited to get Tyrone, ive never been as optimistic as this in years about our chances for finally lifting Sam and the chance to do it in style is fantastic, ideally i would have like'd Kildare (arguably the weakest team we could hav drawn) and the chanced to sort out some positional problems, esp in the back line...

Plus our style is great against the dreaded blanket defence, which actually seems to be pretty absent this year, but all in all its going to be a great series... May the best (connacht) team win

    Tyrone v Mayo Mayo.

    Down v Wexford Down

    Kildare v Fermanagh Fermanagh

    Monaghan v Kerry Kerry

Actually, it's meaningless to me now. :(:D

    Some tasty clashes here.

I think Tyrone by a couple of points.

    Down by 4/5.

Fermanagh by strangling the life out of their opponents, probably 4/5 as well

and the final one, the hardest to call, if the reports from the Kerry camp are anything to go by they are determined to set right their performance against Cork. I think Cooper is expected to move to Centre-Forward as well. That is an interesting one. I'd love to see Monaghan upset the apple cart, but it should be business as usual. Kerry by 2.

I'd go for Tyrone tbh. They didn't play too well yesterday, but I think the backdoor will stand to them. they have a big game in them yet, and I think it might come against Mayo. Mayo fought hard in the connaught final, but I don't think the draw favours them at all. If Tyrone get on song, Mayo could bottle it and go down by 4+ points.

I think that Kerry and Down will go through, as for the others well they are quite weak so I don't think that they will be troubling the scorers come September.

Monaghan are very porous at the back but, Marc O'Sé aside, so are Kerry. Midfield is without a doubt the key and Dara is just not mobile enough to handle a full flowing Monaghan midfield. His ball winning will be key but if Monaghan keep the kickouts away from him and do dogs work for the breaking ball then they will stand a real chance of curbing his influence.

I really do think midfield will shape this championship. Fermanagh had the lion's share of the breaking ball in the first game against Armagh and came achingly close to beating them but by working hard to redress that balance Armagh pulled away from Fermanagh in the end. Dublin's demolition of Wexford was built on the shoulders of Whelan and Ryan. Westmeath, with inferior forwards and, frankly, midfielders, by working massively hard for the breaking ball in midfield caused Dublin all sorts of problems.

Midfield is the battleground of this Championship and if it is the final measure of the Monaghan v Kerry game then it will take a renaissance by Dara to keep Monaghan at bay as it was only by a herculean effort by Marc O'Se that kept Kerry in last years Championship.

Tyrone v Mayo - You would have to favour Tyrone in this one, however Mayo did spring a surprise in them in 2006 so they are not to be discounted. Mayo's full back won't be good enought to stop Mulligan and co this time though. Tyrone by 4-5 pts

Down v Wexford - Down are on a roll, Wexford will find it hard to gain momentum after that walloping from Dublin. Down by 5+ pts

Kildare v Fermanagh - As a Limerick man i know how hard it is to recover from being beaten in a provincial final replay, winning Ulster was everything to Fermanagh and i just feel that the qualifiers are little consolation to them. They will be physically and mentally drained. Kildare will have taken a lot of confidence from their win over Limerick. Kildare by 2-3 points

Monaghan v Kerry - I really think Monaghan have a great chance here. They are not a high scoring team but they are physically very tough to play against. And in Freeman and Clerkin they have two match-winners. Declan O'Sullivan and Paul Galvin are a huge loss to Kerry. Kerry might be fresher, given their 3 week rest, but Monaghan have a score to settle from last year. Monaghan by 1-2 pts

Down just seem to be to be the team that are getting the easier side of the draw.

From watching the Sunday Game, Gordon has to be back!

Now that would be an injustice.

I don't think a lot of people on here realise that Wexford have already beaten Down this year, all be it in the League. In previuos years Wexford have always drawn Northern opposition away in the qualifiers. I think with nuetral venue, the fact they have beaten them already this year and the vibes coming from the camp about effort in the qualifiers in previous years not being what it should be, I am going for a narrow Wexford win.

I think Fermanaghshould beat Kildare if they can pick themselves up in time.

Tyrone to win easily against Mayo. Don't rate Mayo at all and I think the Galway team that beat them are no great shakes either.

Kerry v Monaghan should be a great game, very hard to decide 1 way or the other so I'm going for a draw !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,798 ✭✭✭Mr. Incognito

These games will be neutral venues. Kerry Monaghan will prob be part of a double header in Croker me thinks.

    Tyrone v Mayo
May caught Tyrone on the hop a few years ago and this really depends on what mayo team show up on the day. Tyrone will be consistent and set out their stall to grind one out- Mayo have had a few weeks rest and should be fresh and tyrones match against westmeath was a bruiser with the cavanagh brothers both injured leaving only a week to recover- mayo's freshness to tell here.
    Verdict: Mayo.

    Down v Wexford Down
Wexford have had a good year by their standards. Down have gotten over the tag of favourites in Ulster by going out in thr first round but have been consistent since. Wexford by comparison came through poor Leinster competition by getting anniliated by Dublin in the final. Lack of quality opposition all year will hamper them.
    Verdict: Down

    Kildare v Fermanagh
Kidare were shocked by Wicklow and were especially ineffective in midfiled. They've come through against a cracking Limerick team that had crushed Meath. This is the only real toss up as far as I'm concened as either team is capable of being woefull or sublime on their day. Kildare having a manager with such an intimate knowledge of Fermanagh's style will help but at the end of the day Fermanagh are a better team.
    Verdict: Fermanagh.

    Monaghan v Kerry
The draw of the round. Monaghan got mugged in Croke Park last year. However they also got mugged at home last year in the league with Gooch kicking the winning point in injury time. So in the last two outings, two narrow defeats. The question is can Monaghan get over this hump, and if they can will the momentum carry them to the all ireland. The main factor here is that last year Kerry were caught flat with a five week lay off after the Munster final. They will not be so complacient this year. This is just the game they will want to stamp a message out after the defeat to Cork. Declan O' Sullivan is back- he's been training for the last two weeks. I feel Kerry have the psychological edge though, if the game is close going into the final minutes Monaghan will wonder if they can do it, Kerry know they can.
    Verdict: Kerry.

Tyrone v Mayo - Im going For Mayo in this, providing its in a netural venue. Even if its not I think Mayo have the beating of these guys. I thought the bullied their win against W'meath and Mayo have been down that road wont fall for it. Mayo by 2 points

Down v Wexford - Tough one - I dont think Wexford can come back from the drubbing thay got but it will be close, Down by 2 points

Kildare v Fermanagh - I live in Kildare and I want to see them do as well as anyone does but I think they have reached the end of the road for this year. Fermanagh by 5

Monaghan v Kerry - In some respects I want Kerry to win, just so the dubs can knock them out but I think Monaghan have the making of themtoo . close game again and a goal to be the differance... Dont have a clue ..

With the Tomy Murphy Final on next weekend, that'll be in CP, so surely they'll have so other matches on there too. Better be the Sunday too. I'd say Down-Wexford and then either Kerry-Monaghan or Kildare-Fermanagh will be chosen, with TM on at like 12.30.

I wish all 4 games were at provincial grounds. 35, 000 will be lost in Croke Park but in Navan or Clones there would be unreal atmospheres.

Croker for the 1/4 finals but please not for these qualifiers

Tyrone v Mayo - Fancy Tyrone here. I think there is an improved performance in them.

Down v Wexford - Down - Think Wexford will still be deflated after the manner of the defeat to Dublin.

Kildare v Fermanagh - Depends on how they react to the Ulster final loss. If they can pick themselves up I'd predict Fermanagh. I think Kildare have gone as far as the can.

Kerry v Monaghan - I expect Kerry to win this comfortably. I am slightly biased though. After losing to Cork, expect Kerry to be dangerous. Training is meant to be fierce tough at the moment - heard the Gooch at centre-forward thing as well. Something I can see making a lot of sense, with his vision and ability to pick out a pass. I don'texpect Declan O' Sullivan to start but expect a sub appearance.

Traditionally we have done well over Tyrone in the championships, and their performance against WEstmeath was certainly nothing to fear, espilcally when they had their unfair 2 man advantage...diving dooher....

But Mayo certainly arent the bottlers they once were and a lot of the team are staring at their last chance for glory which will make them a dangerous beast. Nallen rolled back the years Galway to put in a storming performance, and the fact Tyrone are pretty bad with injuries will also be an advantage, it will be close...none of this 4 or 5 point malarky....1 or 2 at the most in the Westerners favour...
