Lost Weight - Throw out clothes or not?

Ok, so I've lost 1.5 stones, still need to lose another 1.5 but in reality at 5'7" and in size 14 I feel good again. The deal is though I have some lovely size 16 clothes, particularly dresses, which I will get taken in, but all the rest the shirts, trousers, suits etc. Get rid of them, or hold on, just in case I put this weight back on, for example if/when I get pregnant which I hope for in the next year. Any opinions? By the way my wardrobe is very full :-) Or just get one of thos vacuum bags, pack them away and put them on top of a wardrobe somewhere??

    +1.

I've also kept some of my 'big' clothes as a reminder not to have that extra piece of chocolate

Keep the clothes, you may never know when you will want/need them again!

Dump what you don't love, in other words, whatever you wouldnt get taken in. The 'big' clothes are a different era of your life, so dont give yourself an opportunity to re-fill them. Getting pregnant is a different matter altogether, you'd be pregnant, and thats a good excuse to buy nice feminine clothes that are comfortable and flattering. There is a reason why there is a market for maternity wear.

Im sure you have built up a rota of 'safe' clothes. But, with a nice weight loss like that - use it as an incentive to maintain, not regain.

I would get rid of them.. I would keep the dresses and have them altered but get rid of everything else.

Give them to Vincent De Paul or some charity - they wont really work as maternity clothes anyway.

I lost a few stone years ago and had such pleasure in buying new clothes, having gone down 2 sizes - it felt bloody marvellous;)

Besides, you deserve it after all your hard work..

+1 for giving them to a charity store. And also to treating yourself!

    I'd agree with all that!!

My OH is here saying NNNOOOOO!!!! Just to me doing more shopping. I have to say I've really enjoyed going into the shops again and getting gorgeous feminine dresses again. I'm getting married in 5 weeks so I'm being careful with money, but once that's over with, the shopping will start in earnest, especially for work clothes.
I think I'll go with the toss them. :-) Well to charity anyway :-)
Also thanks for all the kind comments too. Still more to go, to get to a healthy BMI but I'm getting there slowly but surely, so hopefully making maintenance of the loss easier :-)

Don't throw the ones you don't care for out - one of my pet hates is people doing that. It's appalling waste to throw into the bin something which is in perfect condition. Give them to Threshold or SVP. Or why not have the ones you really like and would wear now altered to fit if possible?

Congrats on the weight loss. I'd give the everyday clothes to a charity shop cos you can always buy more, but anything expensive or really loved, I'd have altered. I dropped a dress size up top but am still the same bottom. Got rid of all my bigger tops as subconsciously, I would have been keeping them as a "just in case I put on the weight again". Treated myself in the sales to jeans a size too small so they're my target.

Give away the 'big' clothes (except the ones you're getting altered)......preferably to a bona fida charity....not to one of those door to door collectors. Once they're gone, it's a great incentive to keep the weight off. I was a big size 14 and eventually got down to a 10-12. So I gave all my big clothes away and it has been great. Now if I find my clothes getting tight, I know I've been putting on weight and I just reduce my eating/up my exercise levels. I just made a decision not to buy anything bigger. I think if I'd held on to them, it would just be too easy to take them back out and say I'll lose the weight next month. Just my opinion.

Bin the big clothes and feed the skinny wardrobe

cut them up and use them as rags, wash the car or the windows with them. Heck you could even wash teh dog with them.

It's not wasting them, and you still get to remember what was. Obviously dont cut up all the clothes.. like others suggested. . dont forget the charity shops!!! :pac:

Cast those big clothes to the flames, very theraputic ! Or charity !
And well done on the weight loss

Go round to all your semi fat mates and offer them to them.

Don't keep them, give them away to charity or something. I think if you keep them you may find yourself needing them again. So well done on your weight loss, get rid of the clothes and get shopping for lots of lovely new ones. :)

I know what you could do...you could give them to me!

    I must be a genius!!

    Donations gratefully accepted :P

Keep your favs..I know psychologically it's not a good idea, just keep them out of sight. I lost a stone too and then moved to Ireland and can't exercise as much, the climate being so damp makes me retain fluid and gain weight (no I don't drink Guiness!!:p)

And all girls have 'fat' days!! congrats by the way!

I'm the opposite. I put on weight when pregnant and never lost it :(

I gave away all my (decent) size 8 and 10 clothes to charity cos having them around depressed me. It was too much pressure trying them on to see if the weight was moving and a killer when it was obvious it wasnt!

Any that were not in great condition i threw out.

    Congrats btw!

    Congratulations missus, well done!

Definitely bag the big clothes and bring them to your nearest charity shop. Its incentive to keep the weight down.

I'm dropped my favourites dresses to a dress maker to get taken in, donated my good suits to charity and tossed out all the other stuff. It feels great, there's room in the wardrobe for new stuff :D

What about a ladies Lounge Swap Shop? I have the range as well and dont really want to throw them out. just a table at one of the gatherings, segmented into REAL SIZES..ie....H&M 14 = M&S 12 = Awear 12 = Oasis 10 - 12.

We could do out a whole table on this!

I have a good few things that I can stat the table off with.

M&S size 16 white flare leg white pin strip smart pants. Worn twice so perfect. Taking up space that I need! Very smart for work.

Karen Millen black size 3 black with those silver buttony things all down the sleeves...very nice but in that stretchy KM material that Im starting not to like.

One orange M&S handbag...sort of a mandarin colour...never used..one of those Summer is coming and I need to stop wearing black moments of madness.

Ive loads of other stuff that I could do with giving to a good home as I have a rail for a wardrobe and a few drawers under the bed so storage is at a premuim.

Can anyone add to the table? Look upon it as a free shopping trip! The only thing is you have to try it on AND LOOK GOOD in it. :)

As someone who lost 4 stone I wanted 2 keep the fat clothes as a reminder just how big I was and also if I got preggers, I'd save the money on expensive maternity wear.

Then I got pregnant and I'm tellin ya, even fat clothes are useless as maternity wear. Mat wear is designed to support and give room for your expanding bump, normal clothes (even fat ones) just dont do that so I'd advise against keeping them for this.

Also I'd advise donating them to a local charity or sticking them in the local clothes bank because your not planning on putting the weight back on are you? If not, why keep them? They're just gathering dust and taking up room!!

Well, I was always a size 10, even had some 8's in my wardrobe, but on 3 stone due mainly to medication and inactivity after an accident, now i am a 14. It is very depressing to me to try and lose the weight has been a nightmare, can you believe, weight watchers say i dont even eat enough in a day, i know all about nutricion as i was a fitness teacher for 20 years, but my mobility restricts me from movement and that combined with medication makes me misserable, and in my eyes fat! The weight is not moving and i have wardrobes full of beautiful designer clothes, some cocktail and evening wear, that i feel are too good to give to charity. So, here is my plan. Am going to box them up and store them, as looking at them makes me sad. I hope you and others never but your weight back on, cos when you are used to being small, and through no fault of your own - ie over eating etc you get big again, i pray you dont.
But, i know i need drastic measures to take all of these small clothes out of my wardrobe, everything but the size 14's are going into storage.
Unfortunatelly, not all weight gain is food related.
In your case i would put them to one side, but it is up to you.
    All the best
