    Hi all,

Always wanted to play rugger so starting with a girls team in a month!

But my level of fitness it terrible at the minute, used to be very fit but not anymore.

So what kinda level should i get myself up to? What kinda training should i start doing?

I want just enough so when i start i wont be embarrassingly unfit! :o

    Thanks all!

If it's just to get cardiovascular fitness up then I'd just go with running, cycling, swimming and the like. Mostly running, as, that is, most likely, what you'll be doing in pre season training before you even get your hands near a ball.

grab someone to go running with ya and throw the ball around

get used to running with a ball in the hands, over your head etc

also kicking the ball and catching the ball at different angles - low, chest, high...

Try running with a few obstacles to jump over and weave around.

Ask the girls on the team, many must be in the same position.

Even just kick the ball and chase after it, get used to having to pick it up off the ground etc.

You might also want to do some resistance training, www.simplefit.org

Well that won't stop you from buying a ball and running around with it, practise kicking etc.

rugby is quite an anaerobic sport, sprinting a lot.

endurance training, while useful, should also be mixed with anaerobic training.

really your best bet would be to go to a circuit class.
or if you can't do interval training. warm up for 3 mins light jogging, then sprint for 30 secs to a min, then jog again for a minute and repeat this 5 times or more.

or you can do shuttle sprints with 3 cones, 10 m apart.
sprint to first cone, and back to start, second cone back to start, third cone back to start.

that is the kind of training you will be doing.

not a bad idea to buy a ball and throw it around just to get your handling skills down also.
