 Scary sh1t. I've boarded up the windows and doors, stocked up on canned goods and have my trusty 12-gauge to hand.

OK, I sat through the first 30 seconds and that was just two captions.
    I just can't take 7 minutes.

Is this the new JC Decaux/free bike signs thing? there's a big thread in Commuting + Transport on it.

Theres no way on Earth I'm ever going to visit Dublin having seen that. I'd be lucky to get out alive.

    It's a minefield up there.

How ever did I survive these signs last week.

Lots of cynics here I see.

Try to think about what might happen next time you are driving and someone walks out in front of your car.

We warn people not to walk behind buses, this is worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

To be honest, I didn't really see a problem with some of them, but others are in fairly dangerous positions. The video should be edited down to a fraction of it's size to stop people getting bored and to still get the point across.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,312 ✭✭✭source

To be honest the problem isn't with the signs, it's with the pedestrians who walk across a couple of lanes of traffic, walk behind the sign then step out into more oncoming traffic without looking.

MadsL posted about this on motors and was a hero. He showed an ad board right in front of a traffic light. It is a bit mad what they are doing. I think his campaign got as far as the city councillors and got them to do something which is never bad. Seems to be a bunch of cyclists here though.

    Natural selection?

Idiots are idiots all the time. They will always find some way of jumping out in fron tof cars, be it from behind other cars/busses/bus stops/ trees etc. If someone is stupid enough to stand behind the sign and then walk straight out onto tthe road then I have little sympathy.

I'm sure the first person hit by a car after steppign out from behind the sign will be in thepapers moanign about them. Maybe they should take the time beforehand to watch what the **** they are doing and not be hiding behind things.

theres a quick fix to that sign: http://cdcgear.com/Portals/1/crown-vic-push-bumper-p2.jpg

Rig one of these up to your nearest available SUV and fúck it right into the damn thing.

So I'm driving a car, a kid runs out from behind a sign on the footpath allowed to be erected by a city council which have been told is in an idiotic and dangerous position, for the purpose of allowing an advertising company to make millions, and that kid dies. How do I feel then?

That's natural selection is it?

MadsL, fair play for trying to bring this scandal to a wider audience on After Hours. That video ain't doing you any favours though. Your post on Motors was far more informative.

id change down from 3rd into 2nd and hoof it to the floor, hopefully hit a jaywalker/obnoxious cyclist on the way!

It develops way too slowly tbh. Also it seems like something Godfrey Jones of Rock Bottom would put together. I mean the signs aren't sinister. They're just badly planned but the video puts them on a par with child pornography or serial killers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,299 ✭✭✭✭MadsL

Ok, I know its a bit 'brasseye'.

It was a fast edit to get it out there, but the point is you see enough people crossing the road in stupid places without these f*cking signs everywhere in stupid locations.

Have a listen to the liveline show - councillors trying defend what they haven't even bothered to go and have a look at.

I like the fact that every one of these signs I've seen are to conserve water and every time I see one it's literally falling from the sky...

There's a lot of really stupidly placed signs around Dublin. If you're ever driving to DCU from the Ballymun direction, try taking the right at the church when coming up Ballymun Road, when you're trying to turn on to Collins Avenue there's a massive merging lane sign (not sure what it's called... the big black one with the yellow arrows) which completly blocks your view of traffic coming in the opposite side of the road

Election/referendum posters are bad too (in general as well)... I've seen them blown down but still attached at the bottom, having drooped over completely covering traffic lights...

When they plug them in it will be using electricity to promote saving water

op would this not be better in some other forum as it doesnt have anything to do with many boardsies at all (apart from the couple of people from dublin)!

Just had to fix that for ye.

Putting those signs in those places is pure idiocy and is a good example of some of the ridiculous road planning in this country.

Whoever allowed those signs to be put up should be ashamed of themselves. They increase the chances of a car smacking in to a pedestrian, just for the sake of a few more advertising €'s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 845 ✭✭✭sturgo

MadsL well done for brininging this to the attention of the general public.

As for the cynics... We let far too much of this sort of thing slide in Ireland. If you don't or care about changes that go on on you're streets, go back to sleep and wake up in 10 years when Dundrum shopping centre has engulfed the whole of Dublin city in exchange for a couple of skateboards.

    Use your head.
This affects most people because it sets a precedent which may well be adopted by other local authorities around the country.

If motorists cannot see traffic lights or pedestrains about to cross a road then it affects us all through higher inurance costs, more money being spent cleaning up RTAs, more money beuing thrown towards the RSA to tell us to slow down, etc.

The contract with JCD was bad enough with very little gain for the people of Dublin. The fact that JCD completely disregard the law when placing these hoardings makes a mockery from the entire thing.

If you take that again from even further to the left you wnt be able to see them at all. What your point?.

As long as the person pushing the buggy doesnt run out before they get a light and witout checking first (ie follow standard proceedure even without the sign)then theres no problem. If they do then they are idiots.

standard proceedure (sic) for safe road design is not to put a bloody great 2.5m x 1.5m sign blocking the view of the pedestrian (not to mention the traffic light) there in the first place. Not for the pedestrian to have to acommodate the monkeys who put this up in the first place.

I lasted thirty seconds. Certainly doesn't belong in Cool Vids & Pics. :) Maybe somewhere crazy like commuting and transport. Seriously, you should have put a warning on that for people with low boredom thresholds.

So somethign being in the way is an excuse to just run out onto a road without looking?

Eiteher way, it's not as in the way as your deliberately tabloidy pic makes it look, you took it deliberaty to the left.
