The Drink Made Me Do It

im sure all of us have blamed alcohol at one stage in our lives for something we have done. but have you ever noticed some people blame certain drinks. i know a few guys who wont drink vodka because it makes them fight etc. i was wondering about this last night. is there any scientific reason or any reason why one type of drink makes people react different than another drink since at the end of the day it all contains alcohol? or is it all in their heads.

    Whiskey makes me arséy sometimes.

I would say it's all in their heads. Unless they mix it with something! Did he have say vodka + red bull? Cos the stimulant of caffeine mixed with the depressant of alcohol might do something funky to your body and brain.

I've heard of 'angry drunk', 'happy drunk', etc. but blaming the type of drink is a new one on me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,376 ✭✭✭✭rossie1977

its all BS imo, all types of alcohol have the same effect on me

just an excuse; oh the drink made me fight or have sex with the real ugly girl :D

I know a few people who can't drink whiskey because they get pissed and violent, I personally can't drink jagermeister and shouldn't drink vodka. But do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

On an average night out I'd end up drinking whiskey, vodka, sambuca, Jaegermaester and cider, and I never get angry. Just violently sick.

    Whiskey makes me angry

probably because of the taste though...

+1 people are the same no matter what the drink of choice is.

"whiskey makes me crazy"...no the large volume of alcohol made you go on a mad one, doesnt matter if its whiskey, vodka, whatever!

I'm a happy drunk that usually mixes Guinness, Heino, vodka, Jargermeister but when I drink whiskey I can get fairly viscious. But that's more on the line of someone I don't like coming near me and me going "Fhhhhhhuck offfff!!!" But like Frisbee said, it's more than likely the bitter taste :pac:

Vodka sends one of my mates loopy. He can drink anything, even varnish, but when he touches vodka he's basically a train with no breaks; you gotta wait till he derails so you can pick up the pieces :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,399 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

Well as a scientist I've no explanation for this but it's definitely something that happens with me. :(

If I drink pints, whiskey, gin, martini, cocktails...I can get really drunk but I'm always either happy or sleepy, never grumpy (how many more dwarves can I name :D).

However, if I drink vodka I become a right sh1t and get very loud and aggressive. I used to be fine with it but I went through a very bad period of my life about 10 years ago and badly abused vodka, drinking lots of it every night of the week. Perhaps my biochemical memory activates certain receptors in my brain that govern negative emotions?? I don't know, all I know is that I don't touch vodka any more but I still drink alcohol (on a far, far, far lower volume and speed) and haven't become an arse, even on the few occasions when I have gotten completely blotto.

This is just an observation but I've noticed with various friends that they have different attitudes towards drinking different drinks. For example, one girl I know drinks pints much faster than spirits the result being that she ends up being much drunker than if she were drinking spirits. Don't know if this could explain it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,542 ✭✭✭Captain Darling

I dont think its the type of drink that gets you, rather its when you change from beer to spirits and you get a different concentration of the stuff, so that kind of fcuks me up.

The problem with me is that i'll go out and drink a few pints and then near the end of the night i'll think that i'm not pissed enough and have to down a few shots of vodka/jager/whatever, and then get totally bolloxed. Its a bit of a shock to the system methinks.

i find vodka makes me depressed. it makes my ex angry, hated him drinking vodka.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 292 ✭✭Krsnik87

I tend to lose the plot when I drink vodka, try to stay away from it for the most part but the nights I do drink it I have a great night (everyone else hates me the next day tho).

Champange is the best drunk, very sloppy tho, JD is always the safe bet!

I become really flirty on wine. As for vodka, I've had some amazing nights on vodka but also they are usually followed with me waking up the next day going "why, why, WHY did I say that??". Seem to have no barrier as to the stupid things I'll say on vodka.

I'm a vodka drinker but I find that it affects me differently on different occasions - sometimes I could have say ten drinks and I'd be fine both on the night and the next day. Another time I might have say four drinks and I'd be really ill. Have no idea why this is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭simonw

some of it could be to do with the amount of sugar in the drink too, eg cocktails make me a bit aggro, i think because of the alcohol combined with the high sugar compared to a pint, which would be my normal drink of choice

Actually that would make sense as well that depending on whatever mixer I'd be using with vodka I'd notice a difference in how it affects me differently.

pints i'll drink till i fall down, wine too, jagermeister or any of those badboys i'll knock back till the falling down begins. vodka, as long as its with a mixer i'm grand with, i might get a bit mouthy, brutally honest with all the above but for the most part i'll just get well drunk

whiskey on the other hand is a big, squinting bag of angry, and scotch in particular will have me throwing stones at airplanes

    brandy makes me go asleep

3 pints of beer will have me on the floor, but no matter how much whiskey I drink, it never gets me drunk!:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Wine will put me asleep, smell/taste of vodka will make me puke, as well as most if not all shots.

Beer is the drink for me, few of my friends won't allow themselves to have a sip of whiskey as it makes them crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,509 ✭✭✭✭randylonghorn

I certainly have a couple of friends who should never drink spirits, but I can kind of understand that ... they normally drink beer, they probably tend to drink the spirits faster, etc.

What puzzles me greatly is that I know a couple of people who consistently react badly to one particular type of spirit, yet can drink other spirits without bother. I don't have an explanation for it, but I've noticed it too often for it to be a coincidence.

the smell. your sense of smell is very powerful, not only in terms of sensations but in terms of recalling memory. we often associate different smells with very strong emotions as a result without even realising it. that's my theory anyway, there's science behind somewhere but I can't remember it.

Been drinking beer this evening and decided to put together my own myspace website. Due to so many people using it the link come and goes, oh well!! Still pleased I put it together (even though right now it is a work in progress)

For some reason if Ive drank 12 odd pints I can gulp vodka like it is water, whereas if I am starting on raw vodka I can only handle shot size or less, and even then it burns like fcuk.

Between 16-19 used to regularly buy the mad cheap Kinsey vodka from Dunnes. Mad, bad nights ensued.

Fcuk it, part of growing up.

I think you're on the right track lenin. Other than absinthe (or other drinks with active ingredients other than ethanol), i'd blame different effects of different drinks on mr pavlov.

    It's all bull**** anyway.

People are always responsible for what they do. People don't do things they don't want to do no matter how drunk they are. Excuse for being a ****head alcohol certainly is not. People need to grow up and stop looking for ways to excuse their stupidity.

Drink does not make you do something, your flawed existence does.

of course it can make you do stupid things, all drugs can. loosening inhibitions, bad judgement, exaggerated confidence, paranoia, chemical imalances.

    Nonsense. Total nonsense.

I am voluntarily imbibing this stuff therefore I am responsible for every action I undertake whilst it has an effect on me. Nobody is forcing this stuff into people. You cannot say "wow, the drink made me do it", unless a team from Diageo forces the drink down your neck and/or holds a gun to your head.

Grow up and be an adult. You are responsible for all your choices. Choosing to get drunk so you can excuse yourself from wildly inappropriate behaviour is so childish it's unreal.

What kayroo said, also it loosens societies conditioning on you, it is not the drink doing it, it is you. You can tell a lot about a person by observing them drunk.

whoa there kiddo, cool your boots. i never said anything about being forced to drink. i never said anything about denying responsibility. and i certainly didnt say anything about choosing to get drunk as an excuse to act the maggot.
the fact of the matter is though, while drunk, people sometimes do stupid things.
if we're to follow your logic through, anyone who gets killed on a road deserves it, even if you happen to be at no fault and someone speeding or whatever ploughs you down. its your own fault for using the road.
and i'm all grown up, some even say i'm an adult

You mean the real person, the one held back and not allowed to show themselves...until alcohol lets them be more confident.?
