Former FF minister Seamus Brennan dies aged 60

    Wednesday July 09 2008

Former government minister Seamus Brennan has died this morning at the age of 60 following a battle with serious illness.

The Galway-born Fianna Fail TD had resigned from the cabinet in May of this year due to ill health.

He passed away early this morning at his home in the Churchtown area of Dublin.

Mr Brennan was secretary general of Fianna Fail between 1973 and 1980 before being elected to the Dail in 1981.

He served in several senior ministries, including education and transport.

At the time of his resignation from the cabinet, he was Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism.

Mr Brennan was also a prominent member of the so-called "gang of 22" that tried to wrest control of Fianna Fail from Charlie Haughey in the early 1980s.

He is survived by his wife Anne, two sons and four daughters.

Very sad - I saw him on a TV3 interview a couple of months back and he looked and sounded terrible. I thought he looked really sick.

Not being smart but who cares. People die all the time, that life. At the end of the day he was partly responsible for the state of this country so sorry but like I said who cares. Rather save my sympathy for those more deserving.

He had always reminded me of something like a stunt double for Charlie Haughey.

And when someone well known dies, more attention is paid to their death. Understandable. Maybe not fair but human nature. You can't blame people for not paying as much attention to Mr Murphy down the road when he's not as well known as Seamus Brennan.
At the end of the day he was partly responsible for the state of this country so sorry but like I said who cares.
His wife and six children do. He was a dad and husband, and a cruel illness killed him at age 60 - in times like that, who cares about the government and the state of this country (hardly Zimbabwe btw)?
Rather save my sympathy for those more deserving.
Wow. He was hardly a cruel bastard. And he seemed like one of the more decent members of Fianna Fáil. Seemed like a lovely fella actually. Can't politics be left out at a time like this?

I know some of his family well and had met him, he was a very nice man and I think it's thoroughly disrespectful and insulting to his family to use the current state of the economy to almost sound like you're glad he's dead. RIP.

They blame politicians, but it's really the people with this attitude are not partly but totally responsible for the state of our country, when they die nobody will give a sh*t.
    RIP Seamus Brennan

I am involved in a local football club in Seamus's constituency and I have to say that whenever we were in trouble we went to Seamus, and he always delivered. Had a brilliant team in place and I know from speaking to others that he always did his utmost to help. I met him several times at presentations and he always struck me as a nice humble family man and a very easy person to converse with. Not being a political person myself, it was always nice to get help when we were stuck most and I can't understand how anyone could say a bad word against him, RIP and deepest condolances to his family.

Seamus was a gentleman, Had been in his company many times in the past.

    Good friend of Berties too.

May he Rest in Peace. And sincere sympathy to all his family of course.

whatever people think of Fianna Fail is irrelevant. I'd have voted for Seamus Brennan if he was running with any party, such was the quality of his work on a local level. Ask anyone around Rathfarnham / Knocklyon (and i'm sure other areas in the constituency) who needed his help at some stage what they thought of him, that'll give you some idea of what kinda person he was.

    RIP

Seamus Brennan did something I though no politician would ever be able to do – he got me to vote for Fianna Fail. It was all thanks to his stance against the bullying and aggressive tactics of the GAA when they tried to prevent Shamrock Rovers from getting into Tallaght. Despite being a GAA man all his life, he stood up for Rovers against the GAA and it’s thanks to him in large parts that we’ll be playing there next season.

Madness, banned for giving a poster a bit of stick for a unjustified slating of a man who just died.

And "Don't troll" for a comment like that. I know what I find more offensive.

    Interesting modding...

anyway, Met Seamus at the Ard Fheis when he was chief whip (during FF/PD minority gov- v tough job) and wished him well and hoped he got a full ministerial position in the new Dail, he did. Very pleasant, affable, likable man, RIP.

Rest in Peace to the man. I'm not a FF man, and I don't like FF one bit - but the comments on this thread are sickening. A man has died, show a bit of respect.

Personal abuse is personal abuse is personal abuse - whether it's justified or not, it's against the charter. I can't see how that's so difficult to comprehend.
And "Don't troll" for a comment like that. I know what I find more offensive.
    It didn't warrant a ban.

    See above.

We can't pick and choose what instances of personal abuse we decide to act upon. It ain't a conspiracy - read page 1 of this thread to see my post on today's sad event.

And you really shouldn't be questioning a moderating decision on-thread - Feedback is the place for that. Or Helpdesk. Or send me a personal message.

No exceptions are made for personal abuse.
BloodSugarSex was banned by me in another thread for his 'contributions'. How about you report the post or PM us rather than bitching in thread when you obviously don't see the full picture?
    Same to the others.

Sorry, but I am of the belief that anyone who associates themselves with a mainstream political party in this country is not doing so to serve the public but to further their own interests. Therefore they do not warrant any sort of outpouring of grief whatsoever.

Is boards not about expressing ones opinion???

As for the old saying "if you have nothing good to say...., same as sticking your head in the sand.

Oh, and for the record, I met him four or five times and he could never give a straight answer when asked any sort of challenging question.
