21 and still out now at 25. Moved to London from Dublin for a couple of years in between. Living in Limerick now. Don't ask how that happened.

Moved out at 17. I'm 25 now and haven't moved back home. My older brother moved back in about a year ago. I've no plans to go back.

18 and never have or never will go back although I am 26 now

Maybe people should state what age they were when they moved out and were financially independent. That's not aimed at anyone but there's lots of people who will have moved out for college but still had their parents paying their rent or giving them an allowance.

Moved out when I went to college in Limerick. Came back most w/ends though and during holidays. Working in Meath now [I'm from Galway] so I've deemed myself to be technically moved out. Home one or 2 w/ends a month. Back for the summer now though and really makes me appreciate the freedom I have being away! [I'm 22 now!]

I'm 22 and moved out last August, don't plan on moving home but my rooms there for me if I want to.

Moved out aged 19 and was, for the most part, financially independent ever since.

I moved out at 22 but it was for college and my parents paid for it all. So financially dependant (at last!!) 26 :o

moved out at 19 had to move back home for several reasons (grumble grumble) but its fine living at home. Hopefully the next time I move it will be to my own house

23 - got a car at 21 though and they live so near everything anyway that I didn't need to move for reasons of practicality/convenience. Had to move back home for a short while recently when I returned to Cork from Dublin (at 29). Was dreading it but it was fine - in fact it was pretty sweet. I've a car so I just headed off every evening and I wasn't there at all for weekends. A few years ago, the thought of moving home for any amount of time at all filled me with horror. I used to stay at home one night a year - Christmas.

18 - best thing I ever did, I really didn't realise how useless at domesticated chores I was until I left and my housemates taught me a thing or two! (like how to boil an egg lol)

Well despite my wanting to say 18 I moved back in several times for short periods, the last being a fairly long one to save up for my move to the US. Since November though I have been paying my rent solo and living with my girlfriend(though she only moved in in May).

The first time I moved out I was 18, I'm 22 now though and there will be no more stints at home.

16 as I said last time. Moved together with slightly older mates. Was hard in the beginning but worth it.

Went to college at 17, and that was that.

I was embarrassed then of the thought of sponging of my parents, so I paid my own way through college, and ending up buying a house with my girlfriend 2 years ago.

There's a good article in this months "You & Your Money" called "Out the door by 24" which puts into perspective the strain that these grown up kids are having on parents.

I don't understand the argument that rent is too expensive, in the real world things cost money, a lot of utilities and bills need to be paid before you can expend on other things.

Moved out at 18 and never been back apart from 4 horrendous days when I came back from Oz, slept on a mates couch rather than stay at home.

Financially independent at 19, two jobs through college.

Moved out the day I turned 18. Was dragged back for a couple of months because my mam was sick but left again at 19 and moved to Limerick. 22 now and I don't have a home so if I screw up I'm out on the streets! Couldn't see myself going back even if they option was there though.

    I'll be 20.

Moved out properly at 20 after a few months away in different places before then. I was pretty much financially independent from 20 (but my folks did help me out now and then when times were rough - although pride stopped me asking for cash a lot of times. Some very lean times during college years!)

My parents would never turn me away so I'm lucky but I would feel like I'd failed if I had to move in with them.

Moved out at 20 and lived abroad. Stayed with them (I wouldn't say moved back in!) for a couple of weeks while I found a place to rent when I moved back to Ireland and it was almost unbearable. Love my folks but need my own space!

I now stay with them 2 nights a year - Christmas eve and Christmas day!

I was 22 when I moved out but I'd been planning on it for ages. I started buying my own towels and stuff when I was about 14 so I'd be ready to move out :pac: I never was ready but I jumped in the deep end when a place right beside my friend became available so I was scraping by when I was already in a lot of debt. Hense the reason for starting a few hundred threads like this! :pac:

21 when I moved out. 25 now and I'm back home for a few months til I move to London.

Only back home because it's easier to save, otherwise I'd still be renting.

I moved out at 17 when I went to college, it was as big a deal as I had thought it would be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,398 ✭✭✭MIN2511

It seems everyone moved out quite early and very few people still live at home... class!

I have mates that are still living with the folks and i swear the rules are not worth it IMO

    Freedom is sweet:D

I was 17, and never went back bar one summer when I braved it for a month then left again. I'm almost 21 and will be starting on the road to being a solicitor soon. I can see myself being forced to move home during that time since I'll be poor as a pauper. Not something I enjoy personally but no shame in living with your folks, they may have rules but they rarely leave you in the lurch, be grateful!

Im 24 and live at home, may as well say it as the other stay at homers are suspiciously quiet. I would like to move out soonish, maybe see the world and settle close to home. The family house is pretty big and its not a strain on my parents. I work myself, so I`m not on the couch bothering them all the time at least.

Moved out at 17, and stopped taking money of my parents few months later.

In 11 years was never back there for more than 3 - 4 days.

I would love to go back home for few months though, food taken care of, laundry done, no cleaning, no bills. Brilliant

    21. Moved to London after finishing uni.

The aul wans split up while I was in the UK so there’s no option of moving home… which suits me grand.

Moved out for college at 18. I went back during the hols, but during the year I was financially independent (part-time job). Then I worked in Dublin for 2 years, and for the past for years I've been living down the country, and moved in with the boyfriend in October. It's great, no parents (I love them but too old to live with them, that's just me! :)) no messy flatmates! Going to move to the continent (and hopefully buying a house over there) inn 6 months or so, so will be really far from home then.

I'm 24 and still live at home... which wrecks my head, even tho the folks are very decent and easy going... i dont really have any 'rules' we all just get on with things, i've always wanted to move out and am kinda disappointed i havent... i live in dub so never needed to move of for college, all my mates live quite close by so theres no incentive to move away from the area (id just end up spending my time travelling back!).

None of my friends rent, some have bought houses further away... and all have the attitude that renting is stupid... paying someone elses mortagage etc etc (u'd swear thery were thinking of retireing soon!).

Only thing keeping me sane is im going off travelling soon for a yr anf IF i come back ill try and get out for good!..... (wishfull thinking ill probably be completely skint!)

Around 19-20 (not sure exactly). Moved out and in with gf of the time. At 22 we split up, so I moved back in for a few months before heading off to Australia. When I got back from Oz I stayed in the folks until I got a job and a new place. Moved back in about 25/26, stayed for 3 years, then moved out again. For the last time this time.

    Although given my track record.......

That's what I did and it was fupping great! Based on anecdotal evidence, it seems the idea of having to go home temporarily isn't as horrific in your late 20s as it is in your early/mid 20s. Obviously not the case for everyone though.

Moved out when I was 18 and rented with friends, just bought my own house last week 21.

Moved out for college at 20, moved back at 22, was back and forth from parents to living with exes.
Tbh I was financially independent at 16/17, I paid rent to my parents from that age and paid my own bills, so anytime I was home it was like renting again.
There were no rules, I did my own washing/shopping etc and had my own space.
I went back one last time last year for 5 months while I saved and bought my own house this year at 29.

Moved out at 17, renting since and probably forever.

Sounds similar enough to my situation - was working from 16 part time, full time from 19. As soon as I started working at 16 I was made hand up 1/4 of my wages for 'keep'. From then on, I paid rent, simple as that. And I did my own washing and cooking, and came and went as I pleased.
(Although my pet hate was ironing, I didn't really iron my clothes, so rather than have me looking a disgrace - my mother did iron my work shirts!).

25 and still at home for now - I'm saving like a bastard for my own gaff. All this news of house prices falling is great :pac:
However the banks tightening mortgage rules is pretty much canceling that out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,264 ✭✭✭✭Alicat

I'm 23 and still livin at home. Spent a couple of years changin my mind about college courses etc and was not earning anywhere near anough money to move out and support myself. I'll be graduating next March and straight into a job so I'd say I'll be arranging a move within a couple of months of that.

Currently workin only a couple of minutes from home so it's handy. I don't pay a rent as such, but chip in for certain bills, shopping etc.

It took me a while but I figure by this time next year I'll have moved in with the boyf (who will also be graduated by then)
