Opeth-Blackwater Park/Deliverance-what a double album, still listening to it a month on, which imo is the sign of a really good album, theres just so much in there and it quite emotive in places.

the new Weezer: Hmmm... may take a while to grow on me, at least that's what I'm hoping. Most of this was available on various MP3 blogs anyway- and at present I'm regretting the decision to hand over good yoyos for it. Love early Weezer, and have been unimpressed by recent efforts.

the new Alkaline Trio: This is weak. I've liked Alkaline Trio since From Here To Infirmary, and to be honest could not name a song of theirs I don't' like. Dan Andrianos tracks are much stronger than Matt Skibas here, but the 'doom and gloom dark imagery' stuff has gone to far. It's getting less 'Cramps' and more 'My Chemical Romance'. Like Against Me!s last album the effects of having a major label pulling the strings are all too clear. some of these songs sound so over-produced it's a shame.

The Pogues- Rum Sodomy and the Lash: stars? Five of them. Everyone should own this CD.

Modest Mouse- We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sake: Me Likey. Only got it a week maybe and I've played every tune inside out. Worth a purchase.

    So Pogues+Modest Mouse= good.
If going for Weezer or Alkaline Trio, get the Blue Album (weezer) and From Here To Infirmary/Maybe I'll Catch Fire (Alk3)

What's the verdict on this one? I've listened to a few of their myspace tunes and they just didn't really click with me. But I keep on hearing good things about them! I bet they're more of a live band....

Definitely more of a live band. That being said, the record sounds better than the myspace of course. It also has more happening in some of the songs than live.

Have seen them a couple of times live, great band to have a few and just enjoy yourself.

    Beck - "Modern Guilt"

it's good, but not great - pretty much the same review I'd give to all of his albums since Odelay, but I keep buying them because there's always at least a handful of killer tracks on them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 263 ✭✭rowlandbrowner

Picked up a few things over the weekend.

A Gene Vincent collection for €10 (I picked the one without unchained melody)
Black Monk Time by The Monks (I’ve owned it digitally for years) it’s insane, a bunch of American GI’s stationed in Germany in the mid 60’s decide to form a band, accidentally discover distortion, amplify a banjo and make some wonderful, esoteric music, 40 years later the music industry still hasn’t caught up.
The first Public Image Ltd. single on Vinyl, it’s as old as the hills and comes with a mock-newspaper, still plays great
    Dr John – Gris-Gris

The Assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford (Soundtrack) - Nick Cave / Warren Ellis.

    Yummy.

Against me! - Reinventing Axl Rose: I was one of the people who got into Against me ! with New Wave, didn't understand all the hatred people had for that album and when I was buying this on holiday the girl in the store even told me how she hated New Wave and I would find this much better....she wasn't lying.

New Found Glory- Tip of the Iceberg: Only an ep but has two good songs on it, not too pushed on the cover versions.
