    Heys guys,

Has anybody had experience with motivation clinics (there's one on dawson street). I 've been looking at there website and have contaced them and the programme seems good but I'd like to know if anybody has had any personal experience with them before i fork over €600. Their ethos seems to be a low carb/high protein diet with weekly one on one consulations over 20 weeks. They also put at lot of emphasis on retraining bad habits and behaviours, and assessing mental status and triggers...............anybody got any ideas?

My friend has been going to the motivation clinic in Sandyford for the past few months. It's a 20 week programme and seems quite expensive but it definitely works, my friend has lost three stone already. You have to buy protein bars from them which adds to the cost but the programme seems very effective. Every week you go for a weigh in and a little pep talk.

I've seen advertising for this where it claims to be the only right way to lose weight.

    Which irks me tbh.

yeah ....... while they sounded lovely on the phone i couldnt help thinking it was a very well worded sales pitch of we're right EVERYBODY else is wrong...... they claim that over 90% of their clients have kept the weight off after 4 years compared to less than 5% in other studies. €615 is a lot to fork out in a lump for a 15 min weekly meeting......... its aboout €31 a week compared to weight watchers €9..... so i'm still not sure!! :o

All I can go on is my friend who it has definitely worked for so far. Of course as she is only so far into it I can't tell if she will keep the weight off.

I haven't tried it myself. To their credit, when I went in to enquire, they told me that there was nothing they could tell me to do that I wasn't doing already. However, I know of several people who did it and got good results.

However, if you are disciplined, there are several websites which could help you put together your own low carb, high protein diet. I'm sure there are people here (including me) who could help you tweak it for maximum benefit.

My friend did it and sort of thought they were brainwashing moneygrabbers

I just rang them and they wouldn't give me a price over the phone.....now I know why! E615 is a hell of a lot of money in one go!

A friend tried them and did lose the weight, when she stopped though she did put most of the weight back on. Just re-enforces the reality that the only thing that works is healthy eating and regular exercise

I attended the clinic in Swords almost two years ago. I think I was out on the October Bank Holiday weekend and with all the beer and junk food I was throwing into me I thought that enough was enough and made enquiries with them.
Decided to go on a 10 week course. I started off at 109kg (I'm male and 6ft3). I can't remember the name of the girl I met with every week, but she was very nice and extremely helpful.
If you suffer from really bad 'will power' like me then the thought of weighing yourself every week at your one on one meeting was enough motivation for me to keep on track with the diet. The embarrassment of not showing weight loss gains really drove me on. I've been always generally fit in my 20s so I didn't need any help on the exercise side of things.
I lost 9lbs in the first week alone; which she said is not unexpected given my size. Each week I lost about 2-3lbs and was regimental in what I ate. In the 10 weeks I think I lost almost 14kgs (30lbs) and eventually got down to 92kgs after a further 3-4 weeks after the 10 week course. I kept the weight off for about a year and a half, but after breaking my leg in an accident; I put on about 5kgs. So I've had the cast off now since last week and I intend losing those 5kgs over the next 4-6 weeks.
So I would highly recommend the clinic. It certainly helped me out.

My mate did it and lost loads, and I mean loads, of weight and has kept it off. By her own admission though, the main reason she stuck with it was because it was costing her so much she'd have felt stupid for giving it up

Went to them in Cork a few years ago. Dropped from about 196 pounds to a low of about 121 pounds. Drifted back up to about 148 pounds and then down again after getting back into the good habits.

Its a little bit more than just reiterating low fat, low carb diets, it works a lot on breaking habits and creating new, good ones. They use a lot of tapes and books, I wouldn't quite call it self-hypnosis, more constant reaffirmation.

It would definitely suit anybody who has difficulty in keeping stuff going - seems like a lot of money, but what I spent was worth far more to me than what it would have bought had I still been 200 pounds.

It might not suit the kind of person who just goes through the motions and pretends to play along, but is secretly doing something different. Or anybody who just doesn't like the fairly upfront selling they indulge in. But it works.

I'd recommend going along, taking up body conditioning and weight training and when you've finished with the Motivation, check out Natures Way or FitnessIreland.ie to satisfy your protein needs. In all honestly, you'd probably spend the money you'll spend on Motivaion on pizzas and beer anyway, but its a question of personal choice and how much you are willing to put in to get out results.

Anyone know where to get protein bar with the same ingredients as the ones in the Motivation Clinic as they charge 15 euro for seven of them and you need to spend 30 euro a week between the bars and their soups which does work out expensive

You could make your own? Search "tired of paying" and youll get a thread that's been running for years with homemade protein bar recipes

quest bars also - bars dont help with the rest of a diet being rubbish though

somebody on boards said they are almost like "The Moonies", as you say, it has be the MC way or it is wrong. I joined nearly 2 yrs ago, lost some weight, but put it back on, MC is a load of crap. They expect you pay 45 euro per week on bars/soups/books/cd;s etc. Look, anyone going to MC is overweight and probably does not exercise enough. They cut your calorories way down and tell you to exercise, of course you will lose weight, initially!! Do your self a favour, go to a good nutritionist/dietician and get a few sessions with a good personal trainer...cheaper in the long run.
The CD's they sell you have EXACTLY the same stories as the books....I queried the sense of this and was told "Its all about repetition".....
I tell you, its all money money....and they really push the bars.
If you go for 20 weeks and IF you reach your target weight, than you are invited to join the extended program ( but only if target is reached) IMO, this is where the statistics are taken.....

all of those systems are about keeping people locked in a diet mentality in which the solution is for you to keep spending money on sh1t products.
