I always liked the Merrion and really thought the place would take off when Luke took it over, dont know how a hole of a place like the Jackpot can do business and not Lukes tbh. Pity.

My first reaction to this was What The ...? as my heart dropped.

Lukes is a well run club with a great atmosphere and brilliant craic (where else would you see a poker player walking around swinging a rifle), and it's a damned shame it can't work.

Unfortunately due to financial circumstances and business commitments I wasn't able to get in as often as I'd have liked. But when I did I always thoroughly enjoyed myself, irrespective of whether I left with more money than I entered with, and was always made to feel very welcome.

Having had my best cash ever, I guess Luke's will always be memorable for me. But more importantly, the professional yet relaxed way in which it was run meant there was nowhere else I wanted to play cards. Friendly and very competent staff made the experience all the more pleasurable. Disputes that I saw at the tables were handled so well that it seemed that the guy who "lost" seemed to be as happy with the result as the other fellah. A well run club where everyone was made to feel welcome.

Here's hoping all the staff find work very soon. Best of luck to you all.

Sad news.. It's a shame. I love that place, i play most of my poker there and the people there are sound.. I dont want to believe that the game on Friday will be my last one there... Feck the sattellites, I'll buy directly into the 115e game. Really sad this is happening.. Gl to the staff in there.

    What a pity I reckon^^
I'm only starting to get into playing live around dublin and preferred Luke's to anywhere else I've played so far. Friendly staff and players and was always a great atmosphere around the place.

I'm very sad to hear this. What we wouldn't give to have a place like Luke's up here in Mayo. I just wish I could have got down and played more often, but I suppose lie many people I always thought there was a tomorrow.

That really is a bad beat. I shall try my damndest to get down on Friday and play.

That's a damn shame & so soon after the new tourney structure was introduced. I thought that would do really well for Luke's.

Played for only my 2nd time in Luke's last Wed and loved the quality of the game, the friendliness of the staff, the excellent food... Had planned on playing their regularly.

    A real pity......

There is that niggling feeling alright.

You'll do well to ever find another casino owner as pro poker and as willing to put the player first.

Although I certainly was not a regular I am sad to hear it is closing as I do like the staff there having known most of them from before. Who knows what the future will bring I guess, so hope to see somerthing more successful launched in a better premises at some point.

Very sorry to hear this but I am sure (knowing Luke) that it is for the best. I am sure we will see all of you working in and involved in a thriving card room very soon.

very sorry to hear this for Lukes sake and the rest of the gang. They all work very hard and its a real pity. I dont bother much with live poker now and if I did, I had played mostly in Lukes, but with so many regular events and so many places, there just not enough players about or money.

    *delurks*

read this earlier today and thought it's a good time to delurk, i've been a regular reader of this forum for a few months now.

i had my stag last saturday and decided that a good night of poker would do the job for all concerned. having read the "why not more boards support for luke's?" thread a while ago i realised that'd be the place to go. got in contact with john and he was very helpful, organised a very reasonable price to run a rebuy for us.

we all headed in on saturday, by no means all regular poker players, but everyone had a great time (not least myself as i won our private rebuy tournie upstairs). ken in particular helped make it a great evening, helping the noobs and taking the piss out of all the bad play going on. about 4 of us joined in the cash game downstairs and gave the game some value (although the brother-in-law somehow managed to triple up with 53o). i eventually left at 7 having agreed to play some omaha for the first time ever.

anyway some of us were e-mailing each other yesterday and saying how the place and the staff there helped make it a great evening and we all agreed we'd be going in there again very soon. they were all sad to hear that the place is shutting down.

so thanks to all in there, particularly ken and john, hopefully the good service will rub off elsewhere.

You are right Jay, only people who played there regularly should be allowed express sympathy for the closure of this good club that was unfortunate in not being able to attract the number of fish necessary to make the business a success.
