Better than beer?

From time to time down the pub I don't fancy a beer so I turn to coke or something. Other than the obvious water, what's the best drink that's not gonna do me more harm than good?

    Thanks

    water!

    maybe some juice

most other drinks are diuretics, and full of sugar

And redbull is the most corrosive on the teeth of all soft drinks! [/random fact]

You do coke? Whoa, that's heavy!

Just kidding... I don't particularly like soft drinks being 150 cals of coloured bubbly overpriced sugar water, but do go for smoothies made with fresh fruit, and they're grand for a fitness diet, too! YUM!

DIET coke perhaps? Or Coke Zero, Sprite Zero, 7up Free etc...

Still water, sparkling water.... maybe a small dash of cordial to add a bit of taste if you're that way inclined.

Does anyone really drink this stuff? Artificial sugar drinks? Why? Can't stand the after-taste! I have a high metabolism rate, and work out hard enough to burn the cals, so I can eat or drink anything.

Now where were we... Oh yes, we were talking smoothies! And yes, I can get virgin drinks at bars over here that, for all practical purposes, are smoothies made with ice (maybe also ice cream and other goodies) and blended fruit without the alcohol. Although, I would probably leave the booze in, ha! Let's see, a McFey's Rainbow comes to mind. Yum! And it's now half past 6PM in OC... maybe time for a "fitness" drink at the local pub?

I actually prefer the taste of diet drinks.

Sparkling water for me with a piece of lemon - really like it :) Can't drink coke etc. just too sugary!

EDIT- that is if I'm driving of course. If not.. then it's Jameson with *drop* of ginger ale :) yum!!

What about a short with soda water? Jameson and soda is a proper drink.

I've taken to Jager on ice recently when i'm out - I dont know if its that much better though ?

    I still prefer a beer.

Jager should be served outta the freezer anyway so no need for the ice. Hate places having it on the shelf

Sparkling water with a little cordial does the biz if im off the beer though.

What about a nice pot of tea ?

You could add extra milk for that all important protein hit. You could also fit a mini work out in on trips to the pub - calf raises at the urinal.
    - Box squats - keep making excuses to stand up and look around. You could pretend you're waiting for someone to come in and join you.
    - Get your cardio in by insisting you switch pub after every drink, increase intensity by pretending you're in a hurry to meet someone there.

Yeah, when its at home its glass from the freezer, Jager from the freezer. Sorted.

In most pubs its glass from the dishwasher, Jager from the shelf. hence the need for ice cubes :(

    /Gone off topic sorry.

Despite your piss-takey rest of the post. I often try to get a cup of black coffee in pubs when I'm not drinking. Its generally no hassle but i've been in several places where I was treated like a leper for looking for a drink with no alcohol in it.

C-13 i have that problem too. I might arrive in a pub at about 8pm say and ask for a coffee and I'll get stared at for a while and then they grudgingly go off and make one. I wouldn't mind but the place in question has a fancy enough coffee maker, so it's not like it's a *lot* of hassle for them and it's not like I'm going up when the bar is jammers.

They could be annoyed because they'd served loads of coffee at lunch time and didn't expect to have to serve any more at night so cleaned out the machine. The effort of having to clean it again after one measly cup of coffee would be enough to put me in a mood too!!

Hahahaha I was just thinking that too. It can be a right pain to clean those machines. Especially if you're having a bad day!!

Can't stand the taste of diet drinks. They taste awful to be perfectly honest.

    Pubs don't do smoothies.

Maybe I should just stick to Whiskey on the rocks !

Don't get me started on tea !

I'm looking for something I'd enjoy aswell as something that isn't gonna be crap for me.

Keep the suggestions coming (if we haven't exhausted them) anyway lads thanks

A single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man's hat always hits the spot.

Exact same as that. Not even from a dieting point of view but can't really stomach much sugary drinks.
Sparkling water with lemon is really nice too!

OP, the pub is no place to wonder about healthy alternatives to beer. Have a beer or if you don't fancy it - have whatever else you fancy;)

Friends of mine are very keen cyclists - as in monster, long run, do the amateur stage of the Tour de France type-keen - and they report (anecdotally) that after a hard day in the saddle, a pint or two of Guinness (no more than two mind), leaves them right as rain for another slog the day after. I guess long distance cycling and gym workouts are two entirely different things vis a vis cardio and energy depletion, but it's interesting all the same.

A marathon runner was telling me recently that beer rehydrates you better than most other liquids after training, in moderation.

Just putting it out there like!

Unless your friend is Frank Shorter I'd be dubious of that one.
