What time is it?

God help me .. I couldn't find a forum to ask this question in so I'm expecting many replys ranging from half 10 to next week ...

But anyways .. here goes ..

What time is it now? 2230 GMT ? 2230 GMT+1 or 2230 BST (Brittish Summer Time).

My understanding is that it's BST or GMT+1 but others insist it's GMT. If it was GMT though that would mean our time constant would be changing? Not?

Or is someone gonna bring up UTC and just confuse the whole mix?

    Any thoughts? Thanks

It is 10:32pm Irish Standard Time

Irish Standard Time is a day light savings system. It is also known as Western European Summer Time.

GMT isn't. It does not compensate for day light savings. GMT is also known in common usage as the same as UTC ("Universal Time") or Zulu time (used by the military) - there are technical issues with this, but generally it is the case

During the summer months we are one hour ahead of GMT to allow farmers to get up at the same time but not waste an hour of day light.

    It is 9:32pm GMT.

Is that base 10? Base 6? Base 13? Which numbering system? You're gonna have to be more specific.

UTC (Temps Universel Coordonné) is the internationally adopted world atomic time and replaced GMT some years ago.

Currently we are UTC+1 for daylight savings.

I don't really unserstand the need to save daylight in the summer as right now, it's bright from 04:00 to 22:00, what's there to save?

well if it wasn't dst it would be bright at 3am and dark ar 9pm, so it makes sense to get an extra hours brightness... when people are awake

    From: http://tf.nist.gov/general/misc.htm
Why is UTC used as the acronym for Coordinated Universal Time instead of CUT?
In 1970 the Coordinated Universal Time system was devised by an international advisory group of technical experts within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ITU felt it was best to designate a single abbreviation for use in all languages in order to minimize confusion. Since unanimous agreement could not be achieved on using either the English word order, CUT, or the French word order, TUC, the acronym UTC was chosen as a compromise.
