He says so himself here - Rick O'Shea will be moving his show to the 9am-12pm slot from Monday July 21st to Friday August 15th, filling in for the big fellah, G. Ryan, while Ryan takes FOUR WEEKS holidays.

Gives a good alternative to listening to D'Arcy imho... should be interesting.

Always thought Rick O Shea would be a better option than Gerry Ryan mid-morning ... will be good to hear how it works out..

First time I'll be listening to 2fm in the morning for a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,770 ✭✭✭shockwave

I think he will be good,in fairness theres no one else on 2fm who you could put in there.

Good move. Probably their most talented presenter.

Should be fantastic. First time I'll be (willingly) listening to that slot in a long time. Rick has been leaning towards the Talk Radio format bit by bit over the past few years yet it never sounds like waffle.

    Go Rick! :)

Sorry guys but I don't like him at all. I find his voice very irritating. It's like he's to close to the mike and you can hear his mouth making 'sticky' noises when he talks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭Mr Ed

Should be a good move for Rick he certainly can talk the talk but i just don't like it when stations use prime time presenters to fill in for other prime time presenters

i will pull no punches here

there is no one , no one , i despise more on radio now or at any time in the past more than i despise rick o shea
he thinks hes funny , hes not
he thinks hes some kind of agony uncle reading out crappy unsympathetic and unfunny stories , that to me isnt entertaining
hes sounds like he once worked for atlantic 252 with this wanky voice

il be detuning out 2fm for the summer

He did work for them yes, which probably explains the faux mid-atlantic accent! Someone else mentioned it above, but I also find the way he speaks into his mic very irritating... almost like the thing is in his mouth :p

Anyone know if he actually talks like this? Like, off air? Would drive me bananas...

Will be interesting to see how he gets on.

In fairness to the man, that's not very much, especially compared to what his comrades over on Radio 1 take. The length of Pat Kenny's summer hols is ridiculous. It must be over two months or something like that?

Of course he did, hence the name Ricochet? They had other presenters like Sandy Beach and some other awful puns I can't think of right now

I'd rather not trust you because you're very wrong. With the glorious exception of the BBC UK radio is every bit as bad, if not worse than Ireland. Recent moves include such bright ideas as the GCAP group networking across the entire country, meaning that most of their radio stations only have two presenters and no meaningful local input.

The amount of commercials they are allowed to play has been loosened up, so that many stations are now playing more than 20 minutes an hour.

Outside of its London station, the XFM crowd appear to be ****ed.

So maybe you'd want to reconsider that statement above!

With those qualifications, he's ideally suited to filling in for Ryan.

    Excellent!

His voice does annoy me, but he makes me laugh. I'll have to turn over from Ray D which will be a nice change.

Ricochet...for the love of god. I'd rather unravel a wire hanger and feed it through my ears. Vacuos air filling babble. An old school jock straight from the Up With a Partridge school of broadcasting where there are only 3rules; 1. All dead air is bad air so fill it with words in a twanked accent. (Choice of words- irrelevent. Just fill.)
    2. Same as 1st
    3. Same as 2nd.
2fm should be pulling the bull by the scrote during the summer months. Out at festivals, doing road shows, live light entertainment and promoting new music in those prime slots.

Gottta disagree fulton. British commercial radio is as dire (if not even more dire) than Irish commercial. There are some occassional exceptions but they don't last too long on commecial (or local) as the Beeb have a very keen ear for scouting out and poaching the talents that exist beyond their damn fine establishment.

Ricochet...Jesus wept...RTE Exec-" Hey you know what those crazy kids on their summer hols will love...A bit o'Rick...My wifey loves'm and she's down with the posse...Wassup dude? High 5! ...The kids will rock-out! "

Then again...it coulda been Marty Whelan! For the love of Jehova could the Biderbeck group give something to humanity and take this daft abomination out of our misery.

In total agreement. Normally listen to Ray D'Arcy but after a week off work and no radio at that hour of the morning, I'm looking forward to not having to listen to Ray for a month.

agree 100%. I thought i was the only one who thought that LOL i reckon he loves hearing himself in the headphones. and the waffle goes on and on and on and on.....and on and on and artiston

Thank god jenny hueston didn't get gerry ryan's spot. she is such a bore...and her accent...it's like a touch of nervousness when her pitch changes.

then, as for ryan show reporter evelyn wots her face, she tries to immitate gerry, even down to his style of talking. she don't cut it for me.

GO GERRY GO GERRY GO GERRY

Have any of you actually listened to him in the Ryan 'slot' at all, or are you just slating him for the sake of it? I've been very impressed with what he's done with the 9am to mid-day show - frankly, he's a huge improvement and makes for much more interesting listening than G. Ryan.

Would you consider yourself to be typical of his usual listener demographic then?

I heard him years ago when he was on the pirates and his voice sounded like he had some massive dental under-bite problem happening in his life.

That, coupled with his banal style of presentation, made me want to emigrate to Tibet, shave my head, don saffron robes and give up any Western values I had left.

    Is that an insult?

If you mean young, male, office worker then I'd imagine I am typical. Joe Duffy and Mairan Finnucan don't cut it with me, I'm afraid

Would you be equally surprised to learn that Rick O'Shea isn't his real name?

(Though if my surname was O'Shea, I'd totally christen my son Richard...)

    His real name is ...
    Paul Crossan

I can see why he changed his name. He wouldn't be on the national airways with a name like that.

Atlantic252 had a lot of DJ's with pseudonyms.

Off the top of my head was Rick O'Shea, Dusty Rhodes, Sandy Beaches.

I digress, going off topic now.

FWIW, I think Rick is ok as a GR replacement.

    .

If you heard him DJing on pirate radio that would be quite astonishing, because apart from applying for the Big Kahuna on sunshine 101 when he was 14/15 years of age, the guy never worked on de pirate stations.
    His career path was hospital radio > East Coast > South East > 252 > 104 > 2fm.

any thing that gets Gerry Ryan off the air for any small period of time is a great great thing.

they could stick the sounds of a bulldog chewing toffee and a cat running claws down a chalkboard on from 9 to 12 and it would be better than listening to another anecdote about how great Bono is from that gob****e.
