'The 27%ers'. This is a term coined at some unspecified point (I still insist by me) to refer to those actors whose presence piques your interest in a movie, regardless of title, plot or complete absence of any other redeeming feature, merely because you know they will make it worth watching on some level. In short, they make the movie 27% better by seeing fit to exist in its presence. We're not talking your Will Smiths, Angelina Jolies or Will Ferrells here. Movies are rarely funded on the back of a 27%er. To be a true 27%er you should hover at about fourth on the cast list, unless it's straight to DVD, and be known to most of the world as "Oh, that guy? I love that guy!"

For me it would be Michael Madsen, Paul Rudd and William H. Macey.

So who are the boardsies "27%ers"?

William H. Macy was the first to pop into my mind when I read it.

Other than that... Ed Harris and Brian Cox would pique my interest.

Ah interesting idea - let us celebrate the bit-part / character actors!

My interest in a movie always perks up a little when I hear Ron Perlman is in it. Or James Cromwell

Only slightly on the subject but I'm only interested in that new Terminator film because if its good enough for Bale, thats good enough for me :D

Anyways my 27%ers would be Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel, Dustin Hoffman (Kung Fu Panda), Gary Oldman, Jason Bateman, Peter Stormare, Jeremy Piven

mike, Ed Norton would be an A-lister surely. But definitely not "hovering about 4th on the cast list".

+ 1, even if Hellboy has turned him into a headliner.

Hmmm, I dunno; Buscemi has somewhat typecast himself a bit of late; playing the same wiseguy routine in each film he pops up in.

Thought of someone else.. not quite an A-lister but Oscar nominated - so not sure if he counts...

    The excellent Ryan Gosling.

Interesting question! Im answering the question in no particular order and assuming that the actors below dont play high up the bill in a film as obviously some of them have recently had their own films

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman
    John Cusack
    Christopher Walken
    Elias Koteas :o
    Christopher Guest
    Christopher Lloyd
Viggo Mortenson (he stole the show in The Prophecy when he played Satan)

No ladies make the list!!

After seeing Zodiac Id have to say Mark Ruffalo. He completely stole the show yet he's not an actor Id taken any notice of before. Definitely a future 27%er as his acting is very under-stated.

He gave an absolutely terrible performance in 'Collateral', but he was good in 'Eternal Sunshine..' alright.

    John Leguizamo.

I almost want to see The Happening!

That's what I thought, great John Leguizamo on the big screen. The man is one of the best actors around. But please God, don't go see The Happening. I saw it a few weeks back and don't think I was ever so disappointed with a film. It's muck with no redeeming factor whatsoever.

It's also the only film where the presence of the boom mic in screen annoyed me, usually I let it go but it was so obvious and distracting in The Happening that you can't ignore it.

Ignoring the obvious B movie stars such as Bruce Campbell and Ron Perlman, my 27% are

    Danny Houston
    Ben Foster
    Ryan Phillippe
    Benicio Del Toro
    Ryan Gosling

good call... he'd definitely be a 27%'er for me.

    Others would be:

Paul Rudd: Already mentioned but still, he's one of the most under appreciated actors out there, I will go to a movie usually if I see his name in the credits.

Also, most of the cast of "Arrested Development" will tip me over the edge into seeing a movie now, Michael Cera and Will Arnett especially.

Steve Coogan has to be up there for me as well. "A-Haaaaa!" :pac:

    Ryan Gosling

It's an interesting concept, as there are always some terrific actors out there who aren't big names, but are instantly recognisable in smaller roles, and usually put in a terrific performance. Personally, Ron Perlman is certainly an obvious one, but I'll throw some more names into the hat who I've always felt were terrific:

    Stephen Tobolowsky
    William Sanderson
    Brad Dourif
    M. Emmet Walsh
    Harry Dean Stanton
    John Turturro
    Brian Cox
    Susumu Terajima
    Ren Osugi

Someone to watch out for is Garret Dillahunt, really terrific actor who's been popping up in a few things lately, most people would remember him as the deputy in No Country For Old Men, or you might know him from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles or Deadwood. In fact, Deadwood is packed with some of the best 27%'ers there are, including Jeffrey Jones.

Watched The Mist tonight and I remembered one of my 27%ers. His name is William Sadler. He played Jim in The Mist, the kind of dim witted mechanic? He also played the sheriff in Roswell (TV show) and one of the main inmates in Shawshank. Great actor!
