Google, the owner of Youtube, has been instructed to hand over the details of every video ever watched by every user and their details.

Just to piss them off maybe the viewing on youtube vidoes will shoot up tenfold. They'll have fun shifting through all the records.

    Edit:
As an initial matter, this is factually insufficient. If any single one of the YouTube users in the Logging database picked a Login ID that does identify that user (i.e. if my YouTube login was kurtopsahl), then the Logging database' information about viewing habits is protected by the VPPA, even if others pick anonymous pseudonyms.

Aha, used my real name on youtube, means I'm protected and anyone else who did so is also i think anyway...

Given that they were ordered to hand over what would effectively be text files on sets of 4TB HDDs, I think its safe to say they are already prepared to sit back for a while as their computer crunches the records.

Thank God, if anyone was to find out that a male watched pornography on the internet his good character would never recover from the shame!!

They wont go after everyone who has uploaded a viacom clip, thats just not practicle, - but im pretty sure they will choose a good number of select few to make examples of.

I was reading about this earlier, it's a pretty bad ruling. :(

Couldnt get over this when I read it myself. What kind of judge says yes to invasion of privacy? Seriously, you would think your account information is kept secure and private.

Plus, the ruling also asked that every YouTube video ever deleted must be provided.

Outrageous ruling, and I think it should be appealed.

Appeal what?? You are dealing with a new the fascist state of America that is in the process of ushering in the Real ID act in 2011 and demanding all digital information, credit card statements and travel details of every man woman and child in Europe.

Have you read Animal Farm by George Orwell? It’s a good book.

I'd be more interested in boycotting Viacom than YouTube/Google.

Do I really want to part with my hard-earned cash for a Viacom product so they can afford to get their lawyers on a case like this and call me a crook for using YouTube? No thank you.

This is the 21st century and we consume our media over the Internet now. If Viacom can't make that work for themselves, then that's their problem.

And if they want to violate my privacy because of how I choose to view, share, discuss and promote their media then they simply don't get it - and can, quite frankly, go **** themselves.

If I never again purchase another Viacom product I'll be a happy man.

(although I might have to make an exception for Star Trek next summer... because I am a massive nerd :()

Boycotting Viacom would be like trying to boycott petrol because you dont like the big greedy oil companies. You might as well give up watching movies!

This is just a small part of Viacam

    Paramount Pictures Corporation
    Paramount Vantage
    Paramount Classics
    Paramount Pictures International

If Viacom actually bothered to distribute their media via the internet with easy access then maybe youtube wouldn't be used as much to access Viacom content.

For all the hassle of getting to watch tv shows via the internet, I wouldn't mind paying such and such to get a tv episoide online. But that option isn't available, so go figure.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I can do without most of them for most of the time.

Paramount for Star Trek and UIP for Bond (UIP are Bond, right?)... apart from that, **** 'em.

Also... I didn't necessarily say I wouldn't watch what they make, but they've basically out-weighed any incentive I ever had to purchase what they produce.

    Unless it's really really good.

    Or Star Trek.

    lawsuits anybody? lol.

this is sickening... i dont really care, it wont affect me like, but it is a very real invasion of privacy. very real. Ahh well, i guess the rest of this paranoid world wont be happy until it knows what everybody else is doing... feck sake.

the real question is, should one person have had the power to decide over this matter? i dont believe so, bloody americans, they really do think they own and police the world.

my bro was playing cod4 online the other bnight, this american kid was on, my bro started talking and the guy went mental saying are you british? he then went on to say "f*** you, we won the f****** war." when my bro said he was irish the guy was fine, but proceeded to to spout racist remarks. Thats a kid like, what are the adults like, surely we have more to fear from that country than any other? Theres another group of nations trying to move in a similar direction also, naming nobody, luckily thats been put on hold for a while.

Not ALL Americans are like that. That said the vast majority hold some very out of whack ideas as to the nature and seriousness of the emerging police state in the US. As in 1984, when we finally accept them it will be of our own free will.

true. its definitely going to happen though. one small group ruling a large group were always bound for corruption.

the thing i find most interesting is that most people go for leaders with a lesser IQ. why? i dont know. sure, they are crafty people, thats why they get elected, but are they brilliant? no... we dont have to look very far, Brian Cowen, when asked if he had read the lisbon treaty, to which he tried to force a yes vote on, said no. and he didnt really care about it. is that an intelligent person trying to prove his leadership??? no. thats an idiot using bully tactics, similar to all other govermental leaders at the moment.

Viacom isnt One Person and Neither is YouTube. On one side you have a big Corporation, and on the other you have a website...owned by a Big Corporation. And of course, the case will be solved by dozens of crack-lawyers (on crack?), and if necessary a Judge and Jury.
my bro was playing cod4 online the other bnight, this american kid was on

This is the point where, yes, you really need to mute them. I can't listen to any kids when Im online. I just cant. Imagine playing TF2 and having a 10 year old screaming at you to heal his sentry gun? Yeah. Just mute them.
my bro started talking and the guy went mental saying are you british? he then went on to say "f*** you, we won the f****** war."
Well, you WERE playing a game series that made its fortune off of recreating WW2  Of course the kid, not knowing any better, is going to spout cereal-box logic.
Thats a kid like, what are the adults like

Well if Viacom just hired a student for a weekend job to type tv programmes into the search engine and find the programmes, report them delete them it'd be no problem but NO, I KNEW they were keeping programmes and movies around just so they could sue them later down the line.

I can tell you now there are TV series as large as 12 seasons uploaded on the internet, findable in one quick search.

Ridiculous. Viacom just doing it for the cash

And are they really going to see my username and say some guy in dublin, ireland watched too much online!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 344 ✭✭Jackovarian

lol, overheal, i meant that a judge gave the final ruling... i just dont think thats acceptable considering it affects people well outside his jurisdiction.

also, yeah, stupid kids. the fecker actually got killed a lot more than anybody else due to his "views", so he got his just desserts, kinda...

Truth is they can be uploaded faster than they can be found

anyway I think Viacom knows its just a stop-gap measure while they think of a better way to combat the piracy: YouTube is really more of a stress-ball for them while they sweat about Bit-Torrent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

lol, overheal, i meant that a judge gave the final ruling... i just dont think thats acceptable considering it affects people well outside his jurisdiction.

Well Irish/EU govt can always step in and remove Irish IPs from the list. Solution: dont log into your google/youtube account while on youtube? *shrug*

Anyway the Judge does the sentencing not the verdict. It will probably be handled by a state judge first and, if his ruling is bogus, can be taken to the Supreme Court.
also, yeah, stupid kids. the fecker actually got killed a lot more than anybody else due to his "views", so he got his just desserts, kinda...

ahh well. you tube is old news anyways.
