You should have put up a poll to be honest.

Firmware gets a big "Meh" from me. The only thing I like is the clock , the rest is useless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 799 ✭✭✭Indie18

very disapointed with the fact that you still have to leave a game to use the chat function. they need to fix this. the new update again like above very 'meh'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭DemoniK

    Good first step...

    Pluses:
    - in game texting is soooo handy
    - viewing other cards/trophies
    - did I mention trophies :)
    - google search from XMB
    - appears to have fixed some issues with my DLNA streaming
    - updates to browser/java means my website is working better
    - in game music

    Minuses:
    - in game XMB is a little slow
    - no in game chat
    - in game music doesn't allow streaming
    - Super stardust HD only game supporting trophies without further updates

Seems Sony are gradually getting their ass in gear.

Think the PS3 is gradually surpassing the XBOX360.

sony are getting there but still dragging their heels a little. i still think xbox does the whole online gaming thing better an i would admit that i play my xbox more than my ps3 for this reason but don't get me wrong i'm no xbox fan boym, if sony start doing things better than xbox (which i think will eventually happen) then my ps3 will be getting more use than my xbox.

in game music not working for any of my games so frankly new ps3 update can kiss my @ss..also the update was pulled out so now firmware 2.36 is the highest firmware to the people that didnt update..it was pulled off because it caused alot of ps3s to break or freeze..and what are them trophies?..like come on they basically throw them to our face and we dont have a clue how to use it..the update was suppose to include in game music and i have yet to come across a game that has this feature..in game music was probably the only thing ive been waiting for since i got my ps3 on 27th march 2007..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

We shouldnt have 2 wait too long for the in game music patches, especially on the more popular games

Its a good start, but the Xbox does a lot of this stuff better at the moment.

I have both consoles and enjoy them both, but in the Dashboard/XMB area the Xbox still had PS3 beat. Still Sony are getting there and hopefully the next update will have them finally catch up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭KTRIC

As others have said Sony are getting there. It won't take them too long to pass out the 360. MS have already announced that they are not going to add any new features to the 360 again. So the way the 360 stands right now is the way it will stay.

Hare and the Tourtoise anyone ??? ;)

Have they??Sounds like the beginning of the end.It could be replaced sooner than we think.I'd say that MS have realised that the 360 as it is could not possibly compete with the ps3 in the future at the rate its going.Sony need to keep on working on the ps3, though, Really get the developers to use the systems full potential(Which, i believe we are nowhere near in the current crop of games). Would the ps3 be able to take native 1080p games??

Its ment to able to play native 1080p games, that was Sonys big sales pitch on how powerful the Cell is but as of yet there are no games 1080p native. The PS3 was ment to be around for 10 years, thats why its slowly getting more features. The 360 is ment for a 5 year life, that was MS plan and part of the reason they didn't pick a next gen format when they made it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Well, we know that ms' next ps competitor will have to have bluray built in and wireless and a hell of a lot more than the 360 has currently

He's completely right. Even in gaming terms once developers get used to the PS3 and how to use it properly the raw horsepower will blow the ickle XBox out off the water.I still would like an XBox for now though....HURRY UP SONY!!!:)

Yes, in the same way if you look at the back of any new 360 game it'll say it can go to 1080p.This is not true 1080p, though. It is only upscaled to this from its native res by the console. Most games on the ps3 run at 720p natively. There are a few notable exceptions, GTA4's native res is 640p(This res does not exist on displays but it doesnt matter because no matter what happens, the ps3 will have to downscale it to 576i or upscale it to 720p, 1080i or 1080p) and GT5: Prologue(I think) has a native res of something higher than 720p but less than 1080p, 1440 x 1080 or something(Requires confirmation). That explains why the graphics in GTA4 are comparatively bad(IMO, of course) compared to normal ps3 games and why the graphics in Prologue look amazing.

What the hell is "in-game music"? Is that where you can listen to your own music while playing a game? If not, what is it? I wouldn't want that feature at all tbh. I prefer to immerse myself in the game.

As for trophies...puhleeaze! That's far too kiddie and pathetic for me I'm afraid...what next, Wii-like graphics on all the games, cutesy games?

As has been said, the in-game clock is about the only useful thing this update seems to offer me.

/please note, the above is my opinion only, if you like trophies, good for you, enjoy them! :)

Thats more or less exactly what it is.People have been wanting this since the ps3 was launched and finally sony are getting around to it.iIt has proven a popular feature of the 360 so its in sonys best interests to put it into the ps3.O and dont diss it till you try it.Obviously, you wont want it playing during somehting like COD4 but for driving games it can be a nice addition:)

Well then it's definitely not for me. I hate having music playing while I'm playing games. Even in GTA IV, I switch off the radio every time I get into a car...unless it's the 'talk radio' stations as they can be funny.

Lord no, I have no use for that feature. Now, when I'm driving in real life I like music in the car but not in a game. I can see how some people would like it though.

Due to MS having a patent on console controlled in-game music, for the PS3 it has to be implemented by developers. There will be patches and new games will support it but for the time being lots of us are SOL

In-Game Music allows you to play music from your HDD when you play a game.

The reason its not on for your games is that no game (except Super Stardust HD) has it implemented yet. Developers have been given the tolls to implement it and its up to them to do so. They can also patch older games.

I don't understand why people want heavy gamepads  What kind of quality are you looking for? I've had zero quality issues with mine on any of the games I've played, it's in good nick after some serious gaming and I'm happy with it. I want a light gamepad, not something that doubles as a weight-lifting dumbbell :pac:

Thats so ****ing ridicoulous TBH. The patent office really needs to step back and see what its doing. Jesus i could probably get a patent for playing a musical keyboard with my Johnson. Why should i deny anyone else the right?

The PS controller's are pretty perfectly designed. Try playing pro evo on them after using the PS. It wins for FPS and absolutely nothing else.

as i said i own a ps3 ok for gods sake im just giving my opinion , sixaxis controllers are far to light , buttons dont have as much controll as the xbox controllers, even the ps2 controllers were slightly better, if your really being honest and have used both controllers over a long period you will say the xbox controller is better, im not comparing systems here.

Hey I didn't mean to sound like I was shouting or anything! I have an xbox but not a 360. but the contoller is damn near identical.

I think the 4 buttons on the XB controllers are too small and too close together. I personally think there is a damn good reason sony has never really changed their controller's design.

I will reiterate tho, for stuff like halo the triggers are the ***

no worrys mate , im not saying the ps3 controls are pants or anything , im just saying that there not as good as the ps2 ones and the 360 ones have a more quality feel to them.i was in xtra vision this am and the dual shock is in stock , at 59 euros is still steep but only 9 euro more than the standard so i cant really complain.

Its and extra 20-25e tho, not 7!

I had a 3V card 2 summers ago but they are kind of awkward (you can have left ove rfunds etc). I have spent a fortune at Play.com, ebay and a few other sites and have nothing bad to say (Play is in Jersey, so every noe and again something may take a day or 2 longer but thats it) For starters, it is far cheaper, theres a wider range then the Irish high street and you are shopping with your feet with respect the the rip-off situation here.

I am 22 with a student credit card, nothing fancy so theres nothing to be afraid about, only bad thing is the 40 quid stamp duty but you'll make that back in convenience and monetary savings.

Now that we have an Irish gamessite as well, the time couldn't be better.

I have not bought a major game or dvd (unless a had been given a present of a voucher or something) in a high street for about 3 years.

i know if i get a credit card my wife will kill me, im useless with money, got a few quid off th tax man and bought a 50 inch hd for 3 grand went by the shop a week later it was 2200 aaaggghhh, these things happen to me all the time so i might go with pay pal or 3 v , alltough i got some bad reviews on pay pal.

How can you go with paypal without a credit card?

I use paypal but only on ebay cos Im dealing more with individuals than companies.

Man I have never ever gone over or close to mylimit. My card is pretty much for online stuff, If I were to use it on the high street all the time it would have defeated the purpose of me gettin git.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I strongly advise you to skip 3v. I mean theres a 5 euro charge when you top up. You can onl buy in multiples of 5 euro. So what do you do when you have a 3v voucher with 3 euro left on it? Its useless.

Since you are old enough get a CC, I used 3V for 2 monthes before realising it was merely a step towards a CC.

Dislike the new update, the in game xmb is awkward and just interferes and thus far serves little purpose. Who actually uses the messenging system? Apart from dealing with friend requests, I don't think I've used it once.
