im doing IT SUPPORT ( ITS1 ) in itcarlow

its basically 2 years , 6 months in carlow, then 6 months work experience, then another 6 months of classes in carlow

im up in a very successful company in dublin on my work experience and its very enjoyable.. dont no if your course is the same/similar to this one, but overall i found carlow a very nice place to study.

mmm id be careful dropping names on here.

I graduated from this course two years back. The big advantage of it is the 6 month work placement, it will really stand to you after graduation. The first half of the course has some good database and linux classes. The second half is pretty much all theory/research. There is a strong business/management influence on the second half.

Two complaints I would have is that we were missing a lecturer for one of our subjects for most of the second half of the course. This is common in Carlow, i.e. classes do not have lecturers assigned to them for the start of the year.

Secondly, the course is a bit general/broad. When you graduate you may find yourself wondering what exactly you are qualified to do. The majority of people from my year ended up in support positions. Many of them ended up in non IT positions. e.g. Sage accounting takes on a lot of placements and graduates from this course.

Sounds pretty similar to what we did in CSM3. Did you have to do a project in 4th yr and if so what was it based on?

4th year is split kind of over two years, before your placement and after. When you come back you are still in 4th year but it is more or less referred to as 5th year.

In "4th year" you do a project in Flash.

In "5th year" you do your research project. This is large project based on your work placement. You are basically proposing some system or process for your company and then researching whether it is a good idea or not. It is all research, e.g. if you are proposing a new software, you will never actually install the software, only research its cost and impact.

What did the Flash project involve and what software did you use?

if your lucky ya can research something that your company actually needs and it makes it a hole lot easier both motivation (€€€) and support wise. It's not a bad course a bit to wide range with lots of theory including a lot of business stuff but it's a good back ground.

What did the Flash project consist of?

    We used Flash!

You basically create an interactive cv. Mine was an interactive CV. You just need to be able to work in video, images, audio etc. Doesnt really matter what you do it on as long as you tick all the boxes. There are no marks for design!

Well we were asked what we'd like to do it on and as far as i remember they were all fine. Obviously a collection of your favourite "stuff" from various "sites" wouldn't be allowed but generally anything you have an interest in is grand.

Well Mike, did you send back the acceptance form for next year?

I sent mine back in but not sure if I'll follow through on it. I have also sent a late application to GMIT for Hons Degree IT for Business.

So if I get a place offer there I don't really know which one to pick. They both look as bad as each other.

Yea well next time ill do one on yore ma!

I wouldnt worry about the topic or even how good it looks. You are given a list of 15 items it must include, if its there you get the mark, if not you dont.

e.g. you must have a video file. It could be on burning babies for all they care. As long as it plays you get the mark.

Depends on what you want to learn really.

There are 3 different versions of Action Script, the language behind Flash. AS1, 2, and 3.

AS1 is dead, but AS2 is still very popular as AS3 is fairly new. Some aspects AS2 and AS3 are completly different so if you learn one you won't automatically know the other, in fact learning one may confuse your learning of the other.

Also you could get away with knowing hardly any code at all and use the drag and drop interface which will also take some learning (i.e. the tips and tricks to create something complex)

So if your going the AS3 code route, here is a good place to start
    http://www.flashandmath.com/basic/index.html

Here is a fourm with tutorials on both AS2 and AS3
    www.actionscript.org

I'm hoping they'll let us use whichever version we choose because I know enough AS3 to make this project handy, but if we HAVE to use AS2 then I'll have to learn it from scratch.

I hate to burst your bubble but heres all the action script you will be using:

    stop();

Im pretty sure that the stop command is supported across all versions of AS.

    Boring.

What Im trying to say is, you can go off and learn AS if you want but to get all the marks for the actionscript part, stop(); is all you have to have in it.

There were people with seriously crap projects who got full marks, most of the class will get full marks. This is a small part of the year which I wouldnt worry too much about.
